The Build: Starting Strong
Before we even step foot into the depths of the dungeon, it's crucial to understand the foundation of our character. My journey began as a humble Squire, a class that's often seen as the "jack of all trades" in terms of stats and versatility. For the setup, I focused on maximizing attributes and gearing up for survival. Here's a quick rundown of my Squire build:
Weapon: Arming Sword. This is a solid weapon choice for balance between offense and defense. While some might prefer heavier weapons or faster ones, this choice keeps things reliable without any major weaknesses.
Shield: Lantern Shield. The main benefit of this shield is its defensive capabilities, which come in handy when facing multiple enemies. It’s also a great choice for tanking some hits, especially against tougher foes.
Armor: Crusader Helm, reinforced gloves for the vigor, and rugged boots. The Crusader Helm gives us a bit of tankiness, while the gloves and boots boost our stamina and movement, critical for dodging attacks and staying mobile.
Stats: Strength and Vigor for added durability. Agility for a bit of extra movement speed—sometimes the difference between life and death. It's all about survivability early on.
I also selected key perks to help with mobility and endurance. These include Sword Mastery, Counterattack, and Shield Mastery, each improving our effectiveness with weapons and defenses. For more mobility, I took Swift, and for sustainability, Second Wind to help regenerate health after a tough fight.
The Rules: What’s Allowed, What’s Not
The rules for this journey are simple: I won’t be using any inventory items beyond what I find along the way. This means no pre-purchased potions, no scrolls, and no outside help. The only resources available to me will come directly from the dungeon loot.
However, I am allowed to purchase healing items from merchants between runs, so that adds a slight safety net to keep me from completely dying out in the abyss. But as far as consumables go, everything else has to be earned from the dungeon itself. This is all about testing raw skill and adaptability.
The First Dungeon: Goblin Caves
I began my journey in the Goblin Caves, a familiar and somewhat forgiving locale for a beginning run. Right off the bat, I got a lucky drop—a three vigor leather cap, which gave me a nice boost to my stamina. It's always great to start with an upgrade, and this gave me an edge in tanking some early hits.
However, I was also faced with my first decision: should I loot or should I fight? I encountered a rogue early on and, by sheer luck, managed to headshot him. This encounter gave me access to some useful loot, including a strength ring and a fox pendant with armor penetration. These small upgrades made a huge difference in the long run.
A few more encounters later, and I found myself fighting skeletons and looting chests. The loot drop rates in normal mode had been kind to me, and I soon found more valuable upgrades like a ring of quickness and a potion of protection. This was a good run so far, with the goblins providing an easy target for some early XP.
Navigating PvP and the Fog of War
Now, here's where things get interesting. One of the most significant changes in this iteration of Piss Abyss is the removal of the Fog of War. This means that every player knows exactly where the high-traffic zones are, including the Troll Room—a known hotspot for PvP. The removal of Fog of War has been a mixed blessing. On one hand, it adds excitement and tension, knowing that players will often be congregating in the same areas. On the other hand, it makes PvP inevitable and can be overwhelming at times.
Early on, I found that it was better to take advantage of this and go for high-traffic zones. I used the Troll Room and the Cyclops zones as my main targets. These areas typically attract a lot of players, which means more PvP action. But it also meant that I had to be more careful in managing my resources and my positioning to avoid being caught off guard by a third or fourth-party fight.
The Importance of Looting
As my journey continued, I quickly realized that loot management was key to survival. Every encounter, whether it was a fight against monsters or PvP battles, often left me with a valuable piece of gear or a consumable item. Looting chests was a necessary part of the grind, and each chest contained everything from weapon upgrades to healing potions.
One memorable moment occurred when I killed a nightmare centipede and found a move speed ring and max HP gear—these were exactly what I needed to keep pushing forward. The fact that I was able to keep looting and upgrading my gear gave me a sense of progression despite the ongoing PvP threats.
Navigating Boss Fights: Cyclops and Troll
The time came for my first serious boss fight, and I chose Cyclops for its relative ease compared to other bosses. I’ve always found the left-side route to be easier, as it’s less crowded and the mechanics are simple: avoid the stomp attack and watch for the jumping moves. I took the fight slow, ensuring I had enough room to parry and heal when necessary.
Once I defeated Cyclops, I took the loot and quickly moved on to the next challenge: Troll. This is where things started to get chaotic. The Troll room had become a PvP hotspot, and there were multiple players—some very well-geared—competing for the same loot. At this point, the challenge wasn’t just surviving the boss; it was surviving the players.
I decided to stay at a distance, using my crossbow to chip away at the Troll’s health from afar. Despite my best efforts, I was eventually caught by a rogue, and I had to use a second wind to get out of a near-death situation. While I didn’t manage to take down the Troll, I did manage to escape with a decent amount of loot.
Upgrading for High Roller
After my initial successful runs, I had enough gold to enter the High Roller dungeon, where the stakes are higher and the rewards even better. The first High Roller run was intense, and I quickly realized that I needed more than just good gear—I needed strategy.
I focused on upgrading my max HP, physical resistance, and true damage on my armor. The extra stats helped me last longer against both monsters and other players. However, even with solid gear, I still faced the constant threat of being outnumbered or outgunned by other players.
Final Thoughts on the Journey: From Squire to Hero
The journey from Squire to Hero in Piss Abyss is an exciting, action-packed adventure that requires not just solid gear, but also adaptability and quick thinking. As I reached the Hero rank, I had accumulated enough loot and knowledge to make smart decisions in both PvE and PvP scenarios. My Squire build had been optimized through loot, skill, and sheer determination, and by the end of the journey, I was ready for anything the abyss could throw at me.
While the journey wasn’t without its frustrations—especially the constant PvP battles and the difficulty of navigating high-traffic areas like the Troll Room—it was incredibly rewarding. By sticking to a few key strategies like looting efficiently, managing my resources, and knowing when to fight and when to flee, I was able to make it all the way from a humble Squire to a full-fledged Hero.
