Budget Grenade Crossbow Crafting in Path of Exile 2
During week one of a new league, a time when Exalted Orbs still hold meaningful value, and the economy is volatile. At this stage, an Exalted Orb sits at roughly 1/100 of a Divine and about four to five Chaos Orbs. As the league matures, prices will normalize, and many of the costs discussed here will effectively translate into Chaos Orb equivalents. Understanding how POE 2 Currency fluctuates is important, but the core crafting principles in this guide will remain relevant throughout the league.

The goal of this craft is simple: create a high physical damage Siege Crossbow suitable for grenade-based builds, without investing mirror-tier resources. The approach is loosely inspired by semi-budget crafting strategies used for talismans and adapted specifically for grenade mechanics.
Why the Siege Crossbow Is Non-Negotiable
You might wonder why we're not using a cheaper crossbow base. The answer is straightforward: the implicit modifier on a Siege Crossbow is absurdly powerful for grenade builds. It provides such a massive advantage that, even with slightly worse explicit modifiers, it outperforms nearly every other option. In short, Siege Crossbows are best-in-slot by a huge margin.
Another important note: grenade builds don't scale particularly well with attack speed. While it's not a dead stat, it's far from essential. This makes grenade crossbows significantly easier to craft than most attack weapons, because we can safely ignore attack speed and focus purely on raw damage scaling.
Step 1: The RNG Gate
This is the most volatile part of the craft. On average, expect to succeed roughly once every ten attempts, though RNG can always surprise you.
What you need per attempt:
1x Perfect Orb of Transmutation
1x Perfect Orb of Augmentation
1x item level 82+ normal Siege Crossbow
Item level 82 is mandatory. It allows top-tier physical damage modifiers like Merciless and Tyrannical to roll. While it slightly increases the mod pool, the payoff is worth it.
Apply the Perfect Transmutation, then the Perfect Augmentation. These orbs are extremely powerful because they block low- and mid-tier modifiers. If you hit something good, it will be very good.
Your target outcome:
A magic Siege Crossbow with Tier 1 or Tier 2 % increased physical damage (155–179%) and any random suffix. That suffix is temporary and will be removed later.
Common failure (~80%):
You roll an unwanted prefix and a useless suffix. Try to sell it, sometimes elemental flat damage rolls sell surprisingly well, but be prepared to vendor it and start over.
Dream scenario (<1%):
You hit high-tier % physical damage and +7 to projectile skills. This is not a budget item anymore. Sell it to a wealthy player and fund your entire build, or more.
"Perfect for someone else" (~5–7%):
You hit +7 projectile skills without the physical damage you want. Sell it or stash it for later. Then restart.
Step 2: Essence
Once you hit your desired % physical damage roll, apply a Greater Essence of Abrasion. This upgrades the item to rare and guarantees tier 3 flat physical damage. The synergy between % physical and flat physical is enormous, making this step incredibly efficient for its cost.
At this point, the weapon is already usable, but we're not done.
Step 3: Abyss Crafting With Omens
Now we aim to add a strong third prefix at a relatively low cost.
You'll need:
1x Preserved Jawbone
Omen of the Liege
Omen of Sinistral Necromancy
The Omen of the Liege heavily biases the modifier pool toward Amanamu-themed modifiers, which are particularly grenade-friendly for crossbows. The Omen of Sinistral Necromancy forces the result to be a prefix.
Important: Make sure both Omens are active (red) before proceeding, or you risk ruining the item.
Desecrate the crossbow and select the 101–121% grenade damage modifier. While not the absolute best possible prefix, it's very strong and dramatically cheaper than top-tier alternatives.
The Big Decision: Add +5 Attack Skills
Now you reach a fork in the road.
Option 1: Expensive but Safe
Use an Omen of Dextral Crystallisation to protect your item, then apply a Perfect Essence of Battle. This guarantees replacing a bad suffix with +5 to the level of all attack skills, one of the best suffixes available.
This route is costly but completely avoids RNG disaster.
Option 2: Cheaper, High Risk
Skip the expensive Omen. Add two random suffixes with Greater Exalted Orbs and hope you hit +5, +6, or +7 projectile or attack skills. If that fails, gamble with a Perfect Essence of Battle and pray the wrong modifier doesn't get removed.
This approach can brick your item, but it's far cheaper in raw POE 2 Currency.
Final Touches
Finish the weapon with:
20% quality using Blacksmith's Whetstones
Proper sockets via Artificer's Orbs
For runes, Saqawal's Rune of the Sky is an excellent choice, though you're limited to one as of patch 0.4.0. A Greater Iron Rune is another solid option, depending on your build.
If you're feeling brave, you can always apply a Vaal Orb, but as usual, expect disappointment more often than glory.
This crafting method strikes a balance between power, cost, and repeatability. It's RNG-heavy early but becomes increasingly deterministic as you progress. Most importantly, it leverages the strengths of grenade builds and the Siege Crossbow base to produce a weapon that punches far above its price point.
If you understand the market, adapt to POE 2 Currency shifts, and know when to sell and restart, this craft can consistently deliver excellent results without requiring extreme investment.
