In Path of Exile 2, players face dozens of brutal bosses throughout the campaign, each demanding strategy, patience, and precise timing. Early in Act 2, you'll encounter one of the first major walls to progression: Rathbreaker, the ferocious Hyena leader that blocks your way during the Earning Passage quest.

Among these beasts lurks their alpha, Rathbreaker, a massive and savage Hyena with a bone-shattering weapon and an army of raiders at its command.

You'll find Rathbreaker in the Vastiri Outskirts, one of the first maps of Act 2. To locate the boss, hug the outer edges of the map until you find a narrow path leading away from the central area. This route opens up into a checkpoint, signaling that you're close. Continue forward, and you'll enter a large open arena filled with Hyenas gathered around a raised platform. At the top stands Rathbreaker, waiting to test your mettle.

If you're struggling to find the entrance, remember that the map's fog of war can hide paths, explore every perimeter and look for routes extending outward. Once discovered, the boss area is unmistakable.

Understanding the Boss Arena

The Rathbreaker encounter isn't just a one-on-one duel, it's a chaotic battlefield. The arena is surrounded by Hyenic Raiders perched above, and if you stray too close to the edges, they'll rain down deadly spear volleys that deal heavy Physical damage. To minimize risk, keep the fight centered in the middle of the arena at all times.

Adding to the challenge, Rathbreaker will periodically summon waves of Hyena reinforcements. The first pack appears when he reaches about 75% health, and new packs continue spawning roughly every minute. These adds come charging from two ramps that lead into the arena.

The best countermeasure? Equip a reliable AoE (Area of Effect) skill. Abilities like Cleave, Explosive Arrow, or Vortex can instantly thin the herd if timed right. Preemptively drop your AoE in the direction of the ramps when the Hyenas begin to spawn, with proper timing, you'll clear the mobs before they can swarm you.

Rathbreaker's Moveset and Mechanics

2. Triple Shockwave Combo

After charging, Rathbreaker often transitions into a three-hit combo that releases energy waves forward. You'll know it's coming when he drags his weapon along the ground, then raises it into the air.

First two swings: Sidestep while circling him counter-clockwise.

Third swing: A red visual indicator appears, this is unblockable and deals massive damage. Wait for the wind-up, then dodge just before impact.

3. Chase and Slam

5. Ground Slam Shockwave

This standalone move resembles a smaller version of the three-hit combo blast. It's typically used after Rathbreaker finishes another attack chain. Stop attacking the moment you see him raise his weapon straight up, and dodge backward immediately to avoid the blast radius.

Best Builds and Skills for the Fight

Melee characters will find this encounter especially punishing due to Rathbreaker's constant AoE and add pressure. If you're struggling, consider reconfiguring your skill setup to focus more on ranged or hybrid options, even temporarily.

High-damage AoE and sustained ranged damage are king here. Ball Lightning, Caustic Arrow, Freezing Pulse, or Bladestorm (if played at a distance) are effective at controlling the fight's chaos. Defensive layers such as Fortify, Molten Shell, or Defiance Banner are also recommended.
