If you're looking for a bow build in Path of Exile 2 that offers a fresh feel without straying too far from proven archetypes, Ice Shot is an excellent alternative to Lightning Arrow. While Lightning Arrow has long dominated projectile-based gameplay, recent balance changes and ascendancy adjustments have made Ice Shot a compelling option, especially when paired with the Amazon Ascendancy for the Huntress. This build maintains the fast-paced, screen-clearing playstyle players love, while introducing stronger crowd control and more explosive single-target damage.

Beyond gameplay variety, Ice Shot also scales efficiently into endgame content, making it a solid choice for players planning to invest time, gear, and POE 2 Currency into a long-term character.
Why Choose Ice Shot Over Lightning Arrow
Ice Shot shares core similarities with Lightning Arrow: both are projectile-based elemental bow skills that excel at clearing packs. However, Ice Shot leans heavily into cold damage and freeze mechanics, giving you more control over enemies. This makes the build feel safer and more tactical, especially in difficult encounters.
Another major advantage is synergy with the Amazon Ascendancy. Amazon specializes in critical strikes and the unique "Weakness" mechanic, allowing her to deal increased damage to Rare and Unique enemies. This naturally complements Ice Shot's ability to freeze, shatter, and burst down priority targets, giving the build excellent bossing potential alongside strong mapping performance.
Leveling the Ice Shot Amazon
Ice Shot is not immediately available early in the campaign, but that doesn't mean leveling is awkward. Since you'll be using a bow throughout, it's best to start with a Lightning Arrow and Lightning Rod combination.
This setup is straightforward and efficient. Drop Lightning Rod to create a damage zone, then chain Lightning Arrow through packs of enemies. This clears quickly and scales well with early passive investments into projectile and elemental damage. Importantly, these stats transition smoothly into Ice Shot later, minimizing wasted points.
Once you obtain a level 9 Uncut Skill Gem, you can begin transitioning into Ice Shot. At this stage, you'll want to start shifting your passive tree focus from lightning damage to cold damage. Projectile bonuses, elemental damage, and critical strike nodes remain valuable, so the respec cost is relatively low and manageable.
Amazon Ascendancy and Core Mechanics
The Amazon Ascendancy shines in crit-based elemental builds. Her ability to exploit enemy weaknesses significantly boosts damage against tougher foes, which is crucial in Path of Exile 2's endgame. Since Ice Shot excels at applying freeze and chill, enemies are often locked down long enough for your crits to land decisively.
This synergy allows the build to scale exceptionally well with gear upgrades. As you invest more POE 2 Currency into better bows, quivers, and critical strike modifiers, the build's damage ramps up quickly without losing its defensive utility.
