Top Tier: The Best Ascendancies in 0.5

Oracle Druid: The Safest Pick

Oracle Druid sits at the top because it is incredibly tanky and forgiving. While other classes struggle to survive in hardcore content, the Druid tanks through mistakes and keeps going. The core playstyle is hybrid physical and elemental damage with shapeshifting—bear, wolf, or wyvern, depending on your build.

The Oracle ascendancy survived the sustainability nerfs in 0.5 because it never relied heavily on leech mechanics, avoiding the survivability collapse that hit competing caster archetypes. The trade-off is that Druid is a strength and intelligence hybrid, requiring investment in both stats. But if you want the highest survivability in the game combined with strong damage from multiple sources, Oracle Druid is the pick.

Pathfinder Ranger: Versatile and Meta-Ready

Pathfinder is top tier for riding the patch 0.5 meta from day one. It covers multiple viable archetypes—grenades, poison bows, galvanic shards, and shock burst rounds—which means flexibility to experiment without rebuilding from scratch.

Pathfinder also opens strong item combinations like Chevron's Sashal to restore energy shield alongside life. It scales cleanly from league start all the way to endgame without needing a major build pivot, which is exactly what you want when a new patch drops.

Why Druid Is Best for Beginners

Druid is the safest first pick for new players in patch 0.5. Every playstyle within the class is viable—plant caster, wolf, wyvern, or bear—which means you can try different approaches without committing hard early.

The tankiness means you will die less while learning the passive tree, flask management, and dodge timing. If you want an alternative, Titan Warrior is generically strong with heavy armor and high life scaling that absorbs hits while you learn the fundamentals. But Druid is the recommendation if you are completely new to Path of Exile 2.

S-Tier: Dominant Ascendancies

Martial Artist (Monk)

The biggest winner of patch 0.5 is the Martial Artist Monk. The ability to maintain three active Tempest Bells simultaneously dramatically increased its burst potential, especially combined with ancestral interactions that treat the bells like strike skills. Add Hollow Palm scaling and the new Crushing Fear gloves, and the result is a melee archetype that delivers absurd damage while remaining surprisingly difficult to kill.

Martial Artist also generates combos faster than any previous Monk ascendancy, enabling triple Tempest Bell detonations and Glacial Cascade boss deletion. It has the smoothest linear progression from campaign to Tier 15 maps in the entire patch.

Spirit Walker (Huntress)

Spirit Walker is the headline class of Runes of Aldur. It channels Stag, Owl, and Bear spirits, can summon unique pinnacle bosses as companions, and abuses the Twister + Whirling Slash interaction to freeze entire screens. The Twister build offers incredibly fast map clearing with freeze-based crowd control and devastating tornadoes. The Beast Master build allows you to tame and summon companions, including powerful rare beasts, to fight on your behalf.

Deadeye (Ranger)

Deadeye is promoted to top tier thanks to a transformative indirect buff: Mirage Deadeye can now handle channeled skills like Snipe. This allows you to stay mobile while your clone handles the most vulnerable part of the bow playstyle. Gathering Winds, Point Blank, Far Shot, and Endless Munitions were not touched in a patch that used patch notes as a hit list. Ice Shot + Snipe remains the fastest map clear in the game.

A-Tier: Highly Viable Picks

Lich (Witch)

Lich continues to stand out as one of the safest caster archetypes. Essence Drain and Contagion builds paired with Bonestorm survived Version 0.5 with minimal collateral damage, preserving one of the most race-proven and beginner-friendly playstyles currently available. It remains a lazy powerhouse for minion armies or EDC casters, benefiting from new minion splash support gems added in 0.5.

Titan (Warrior)

Titan gained value simply because armor and raw physical mitigation became more important after energy shield and recovery systems were toned down across the board. It excels with Whirling Assault and Meteor Bear configurations, leveraging high armor values that now apply more effectively to elemental damage.

Blood Mage (Witch)

Blood Mage still has interesting spell scaling and life-based ideas, but the 0.5 sustain changes make the class harder to recommend as a safe starter. It can still be built well, and experienced players may find strong versions. The problem is that Blood Mage's comfort depends heavily on getting the life cost, recovery, and damage loop under control.

Witchhunter (Mercenary)

Despite a nerf to Sorcery Ward, the increase in base armor on endgame items in 0.5 keeps Witchhunter as a premier choice for high max-hit defensive layering. Grenade archetypes remain untouched—Explosive + Gas + Oil drops in Act 1, Zone 1. The downside is the high button count required for effective play.

Tactician (Mercenary)

Tactician remains a pillar of reliability. The "Pin-to-Win" grenade strategy and Supporting Fire builds were left completely intact, offering a failure-proof path from the campaign to pinnacle bosses.

B-Tier: Solid Choices with Clear Strengths

Invoker (Monk)

Invoker is B-Tier because Martial Artist now gives Monk players a stronger and more exciting 0.5 path. Invoker can still scale elemental and spirit-based builds well, but Martial Artist offers more immediate power and stronger new interactions.

Infernalist (Witch)

Infernalist reigns supreme in the current meta thanks to the Recoup mechanic. With the right Recoup build, you convert damage taken into Health and Energy Shield recovery, making you incredibly difficult to kill. However, you do need specific equipment like Sacrosanctum armor and key skills like Pyromantic Pact to fully utilize its potential.

Stormweaver (Sorceress)

Stormweaver is B Tier because many of its best reasons to play are more niche than the top caster options. It still supports strong elemental caster ideas, but Path of Exile 2 0.5 has stronger general caster options for most players, especially Infernalist, Oracle, and Lich.

C-Tier and Below: Niche or Underwhelming

Chronomancer (Sorceress)

Chronomancer is C-Tier because time-based defensive tools are interesting, but the class still feels outpaced by better caster ascendancies. Time Freeze and defensive control can be useful, but useful does not always mean efficient.

Gemling Legionnaire (Mercenary)

Gemling Legionnaire is C Tier because the 0.5 version has interesting rework potential with Essence of Virtue and Advanced Theurgy, but it needs more settled build proof before it deserves a higher starter ranking.

Acolyte of Chayula (Monk)

Acolyte of Chayula is C Tier. It has a high ceiling with chaos and void damage but a punishing learning curve. Do not touch without prior PoE 2 knowledge.

Warbringer, Ritualist, Smith of Kitava

These are the lowest-ranked ascendancies. Warbringer struggles after Fortifying Cry and Shield Wall nerfs. Ritualist offers little standout value. Smith of Kitava, despite armor buffs in 0.5, still lacks offensive capabilities.
