Summary
The Gemling Legionnaire's Advanced Thaumaturgy ascendancy node transforms Cluster Grenade into an instant shotgun blast that can one-shot bosses. With the quality bonus providing 40% reduced detonation time, combined with Shortfuse support and passive nodes, all 72 mini-grenades explode in the same spot for devastating single-target damage. This guide covers the full leveling journey from Act 1 to level 65, using self-found gear with no expensive items required. To push into endgame, buy POE2 Currency and grab the upgrades needed to maintain its one-shot potential.
How Cluster Grenade Becomes a Shotgun
The Core Mechanic
Cluster Grenade normally fires a grenade with a 2-second detonation time. The primary grenade explodes into 18 mini-grenades that spread out before exploding. With Advanced Thaumaturgy, gem quality provides 40% reduced detonation time. Combined with Shortfuse support (80% reduced detonation time) and passive tree nodes, the entire skill becomes instant.
The Math Behind One-Shotting Bosses
Each Cluster Grenade fires 4 projectiles (with Multishot and a Bombardment Crossbow). Each projectile splits into 18 mini-grenades, totaling 72 mini-grenades that can all hit the same enemy. With all 72 projectiles exploding in one spot, the damage is enough to instantly delete any boss in the game.
Act 1: Getting Started
Early Skill Setup
Start with the crossbow and Fragmentation Rounds. The first skill is Entangle, which throws vines that choke enemies to death. Entangle allows you to zoom through areas without worrying about reloading or grenade timers.
The second skill is Permafrost Bolts. Freeze bosses with Permafrost Bolts, then explode them with Fragmentation Rounds. This combo carries through Act 1.
First Support Gems
Do not spend support gems on early skills. Wait until Explosive Grenade becomes available, then add Multishot and Magnified Area.
Playstyle Options
Players have two choices: continue using Entangle to zoom through areas, or throw Explosive Grenades at their feet and roll through them. A combination of both works best—Entangle slows enemies while Explosive Grenades finish them off.
Act 2: Transitioning to Grenades
Flash Grenade
At level 22, pick up Flash Grenade as the main clearing tool. Add Multishot and Elemental Armament. Flash Grenade clears almost everything instantly. Against bosses, use Explosive Grenades with Permafrost Bolts and Fragmentation Rounds.
Herald of Ash
The first spirit gem is Herald of Ash. Flash Grenade kills enemies, and any survivors are inflicted with a massive ignite from nearby deaths.
Gas Grenade
Add Gas Grenade with Multishot and Corrosion. This breaks enemy armor, which is important because Explosive Grenade only converts 80% physical to fire, and Flash Grenade is mostly physical.
Passives
Projectile damage nodes
Cooldown recovery effect (for faster Flash Grenade)
Full armor only (no evasion rating)
Weapon Swap Mechanics
How Weapon Swap Works
Lock one weapon for both sets by right-clicking the icon. Set all grenade skills to Weapon Set 1 and set Explosive Shot to Weapon Set 2. This allows different passive nodes for each set.
Weapon Set 1 (Grenades)
Volatile Grenades (damage and detonation time)
Grenade damage
Area of effect
Cooldown recovery
Weapon Set 2 (Crossbow)
Reload speed
Attack speed
Crossbow damage
40% increased damage with two-handed weapons
Act 3 and Beyond
Bombardment Crossbow
In Act 3, the vendor starts selling Bombardment Crossbows with the modifier "Grenade skills fire an additional projectile." Buy every single one and reforge to get a good one.
