How Cluster Grenade Becomes a Shotgun

The Core Mechanic

Cluster Grenade normally fires a grenade with a 2-second detonation time. The primary grenade explodes into 18 mini-grenades that spread out before exploding. With Advanced Thaumaturgy, gem quality provides 40% reduced detonation time. Combined with Shortfuse support (80% reduced detonation time) and passive tree nodes, the entire skill becomes instant.

The Math Behind One-Shotting Bosses

Each Cluster Grenade fires 4 projectiles (with Multishot and a Bombardment Crossbow). Each projectile splits into 18 mini-grenades, totaling 72 mini-grenades that can all hit the same enemy. With all 72 projectiles exploding in one spot, the damage is enough to instantly delete any boss in the game.

Act 1: Getting Started

Early Skill Setup

Start with the crossbow and Fragmentation Rounds. The first skill is Entangle, which throws vines that choke enemies to death. Entangle allows you to zoom through areas without worrying about reloading or grenade timers.

The second skill is Permafrost Bolts. Freeze bosses with Permafrost Bolts, then explode them with Fragmentation Rounds. This combo carries through Act 1.

First Support Gems

Do not spend support gems on early skills. Wait until Explosive Grenade becomes available, then add Multishot and Magnified Area.

Playstyle Options

Players have two choices: continue using Entangle to zoom through areas, or throw Explosive Grenades at their feet and roll through them. A combination of both works best—Entangle slows enemies while Explosive Grenades finish them off.

Act 2: Transitioning to Grenades

Flash Grenade

At level 22, pick up Flash Grenade as the main clearing tool. Add Multishot and Elemental Armament. Flash Grenade clears almost everything instantly. Against bosses, use Explosive Grenades with Permafrost Bolts and Fragmentation Rounds.

Herald of Ash

The first spirit gem is Herald of Ash. Flash Grenade kills enemies, and any survivors are inflicted with a massive ignite from nearby deaths.

Gas Grenade

Add Gas Grenade with Multishot and Corrosion. This breaks enemy armor, which is important because Explosive Grenade only converts 80% physical to fire, and Flash Grenade is mostly physical.

Passives

Projectile damage nodes

Cooldown recovery effect (for faster Flash Grenade)

Full armor only (no evasion rating)

Weapon Swap Mechanics

How Weapon Swap Works

Lock one weapon for both sets by right-clicking the icon. Set all grenade skills to Weapon Set 1 and set Explosive Shot to Weapon Set 2. This allows different passive nodes for each set.

Weapon Set 1 (Grenades)

Volatile Grenades (damage and detonation time)

Grenade damage

Area of effect

Cooldown recovery

Weapon Set 2 (Crossbow)

Reload speed

Attack speed

Crossbow damage

40% increased damage with two-handed weapons

Act 3 and Beyond

Bombardment Crossbow

In Act 3, the vendor starts selling Bombardment Crossbows with the modifier "Grenade skills fire an additional projectile." Buy every single one and reforge to get a good one.

Oil Grenade

Add Oil Grenade with Persistent Ground and Potent Exposure. It lowers enemy elemental resistance.

Defensive Layers

Add Wind Dancer with Blind support. Even with full armor, Wind Dancer provides evasion rating and blinds enemies that hit the player. This prevents deaths while zooming through packs.

Second Ascendancy

Choose Advanced Thaumaturgy. With +4 gem quality, skills already receive the additional effect. Invest Gemcutter's Prisms into Explosive Grenade for bonus projectiles.

Cluster Grenade Swap

Making Cluster Grenade Instant

At level 52, the build shifts toward Cluster Grenade. To achieve instant detonation :

1. Quality Cluster Grenade to 20% (48% reduced detonation time from Advanced Thaumaturgy)

2. Take reduced detonation time nodes on the passive tree

3. Use Shortfuse 2 support (80% reduced detonation time)

4. Remove Cluster Bombs nodes (they increase detonation time)

Total detonation time drops to approximately 0.2 seconds for the main grenade and 0.31 seconds for mini-grenades.

Support Gems for Cluster Grenade

Shortfuse 2: 80% reduced detonation time

Second Wind 2: Four cooldown uses

Multishot 2: More projectiles

Concentrated Area: 30% more damage (bosses only)

The Riven Armor Combo

Break enemy armor with Flash Grenade (now with Stun and Pin supports). Use High Velocity Rounds to apply Riven Armor, a debuff that deals massive damage based on how many hits the enemy takes. Each Cluster Grenade triggers this multiple times, overloading the debuff for massive damage.

Endgame Upgrades

Quality Stacking

The quality bonuses from Advanced Thaumaturgy scale with gem quality. This includes additional projectile speed, detonation time reduction, and more damage. The quality effects list includes :

Cluster Grenade: 40% reduced detonation time (up to 80% with quality stacking)

Explosive Grenade: Fires 0-2 additional projectiles

Oil Grenade: 15% less elemental resistance

Herald of Ash: 20% increased fire damage

Gem Studded

Gem Studded provides bonuses based on support gem colors. If one color is dominant, you get a specific bonus. If all colors are equal, you get all three bonuses :

Strength (red): Hits against you have no Critical Damage Bonus

Dexterity (green): 40% less movement speed penalty while using skills

Intelligence (blue): Skills have 30% less cost

Redemption Unique

The Redemption crossbow is the endgame weapon for this build. Every 2-3 grenade skill uses grants Explosive Rhythm. At 10 stacks, you gain Explosive Fervour, which removes cooldowns on all grenade skills for 10 seconds and grants an additional projectile.

Essence of Virtue

Essence of Virtue grants a Virtuous Barrier skill. When active, it accumulates motes based on socketed gems :

Strength motes (Red): 2% maximum life per mote

Dexterity motes (Green): 5% armor, evasion, and energy shield per mote

Intelligence motes (Blue): 5% life and mana regeneration rate per mote

With balanced gem colors (around 11 red, 10 green, and 4 blue), this provides approximately 22% maximum life, 50% armor/evasion/energy shield, and 24% life/mana recovery.

Final Thoughts

The Cluster Grenade Gemling Legionnaire is one of the strongest builds in Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5. Advanced Thaumaturgy transforms Cluster Grenade from a delayed area skill into an instant shotgun that one-shots bosses. The build works with self-found gear and scales into the endgame with quality stacking and the Redemption unique. With enough POE2 Currency, you can accelerate your gear progression and unlock the build's full potential even faster.
