Marvel Rivals Season 2: Early Tank Tier List and Meta

May-06-2025 PST Marvel Rivals

Let's be honest: it's way too early to make a definitive Marvel Rivals Season 2 tier list. The new season just dropped, the meta is still sorting itself out, and half of us are still trying to figure out whether our mains are busted or borderline throw picks. But that hasn't stopped the community from begging for a tier list every 15 minutes like it's a Marvel-themed gacha banner. So here we are.

Marvel Rivals Season 2: Early Tank Tier List and Meta

Now, let's be clear: the time I hit publish, it might already be shifting. But this is where we're at right now based on ranked play, overall synergy, buffs/nerfs, and general game sense. Let's dive into the tanks and dissect what's going on, starting at the top.

S Tier: The Gods of the Current Meta

Groot – Perma-Ban Material

There is no Marvel Rivals game right now without Groot looming over the draft like a green, bark-covered god. He's been S-tier since the end of Season 1, and guess what? He didn't get nerfed. Not even a tickle. That makes Groot arguably the most important ban in the game.

If you don't ban Groot, you're rolling the dice with your MMR. He can solo lobbies if piloted well. He controls space, protects backlines, and has absurd survivability. He's not just the best tank in the game—he's the most influential. And that influence is so strong he barely even exists in matches anymore, because he's banned in almost every lobby.

Emma Frost – The True Fat DPS

Let me say this outright: Emma Frost is the best tank in the game—if Groot is banned. That's the key caveat. Emma is technically a tank, but let's not kid ourselves—she's a fat DPS. She's a 1v1 demon who can roll supports, squishies, and even bully other tanks.

You know who Emma dominates? Hulk, Thor, Penny Parker, and even Doctor Strange. She slows Venom. She outbrawls Captain America. There's no real downside here. She's got damage, utility, mobility, and sustain. All of it. Emma is the total package in Season 2.

A Tier: Meta-Proof and Consistent

Magneto – Still Brain-Off Meta King

Magneto hasn't lost his throne. He might not be the absolute best tank anymore, but he's still one of the safest and most reliable picks in the game. You don't need to think when you play Magneto—just load him up, throw some metal around, and get value.

He fits into every comp. He synergizes with everyone from Venom to Doctor Strange, Groot, Hulk, Emma, and Cap. If you want stability, Magneto delivers. He's the most "plug-and-play" tank in the roster, and he doesn't need a special comp to work.

Venom – The Dive King

Venom is in a great spot right now. Is he a top-tier tank like Groot or Emma? No. But he excels in dive comps, which—despite the complaints on Reddit and Twitter—aren't that broken.

Venom offers solid disruption, strong front-line pressure, and works especially well when flanked by characters like Wolverine or Spider-Man. There are plenty of tools to counter dive right now, so don't panic. But Venom remains one of the best dive enablers in the game.

Hulk – Surprisingly Solid

Hulk's in a weird place. He didn't get major changes this season, and yet he feels more relevant than before. He's tanky (duh), disruptive, and brings strong peel when needed.

While not flashy, Hulk is consistent. He won't carry games like Groot or Emma, but he's great in coordinated teams and strong against aggressive divers thanks to his crowd control. He's better than Thing right now, for sure.

B Tier: Niche Picks with Potential

Thing – The Former Wall

Things took a bit of a tumble this season. A small nerf to his E (5%) and the rise of Emma Frost means his core value—resisting dive—has been heavily outclassed.

In Season 1, Thing/Magneto was a staple combo to counter Wolverine dives. But now, Emma can just press Diamond Form and ignore the grab. She's more survivable, deals more damage, and offers more utility. Things don't work well with Groot, and if you're playing dive, you'd rather have Mag and Venom. The thing isn't bad, but he's very outclassed in this meta.

That said, Thing still has a place when Groot isn't banned and when you're playing into heavy melee comps. He just doesn't do anything better than the top-tier picks.

Thor – Slept On but Scary

Let's talk about Thor. Thor gets hate not because he's bad, but because he's misunderstood. He doesn't bring a ton of utility. He's not a real tank—he's just a beefy DPS. And in a world where everyone expects tanks to peel and control, Thor is just... damage.

But that doesn't mean he's worthless. A good Thor is terrifying. He can delete backlines and mess with squishies in ways few others can. That said, he gets demolished by Emma, who's everywhere right now. That's a rough matchup.

Still, he's a lot better than people give him credit for. He's just hard to use well in team-focused play, where his lack of utility can hurt comps that rely on peel or synergy.

C Tier: The Bottom of the Barrel (For Now)

Penny Parker – The Best Worst Tank

Oh, Penny. Why is it that whenever I rank you low, everyone loses their mind? The pitchforks come out, people start yelling in my chat, and I have to sit here explaining again why she's at the bottom.

Let's clear the air: Penny is the best worst tank. Someone has to be last. We're not handing out participation trophies here. Not every character can be A-tier. Penny got buffed this season—movement while left-clicking, more health, and headshot potential. All good changes.

And yes, she's better than she was last season. I genuinely think she climbed a tier. But that still makes her last place. She's improved, but not enough to shake the meta. She's not going to outvalue Groot, Mag, Venom, Emma, or even Thor or Thing in most comps.

The buffs were real. She's viable now. But viability doesn't mean optimal. And right now, she's still a niche pick at best, and usually not your best option unless you've got very specific synergy or playstyle.

Meta Trends and Takeaways

Dive Is Not That Strong

There's been a lot of talk about Dive being broken. It's not. Yes, Venom, Mag, and Spider-Man are popular. Yes, Wolverine can still ruin your supporters' day. But we've seen this before in Overwatch, and we know how it ends.

There are plenty of counters to dive right now. Between Emma's crowd control, Hulk's peel, Mag's zoning, and Groot (if unbanned), the tools are there. Dive comps are more about execution than raw power. If you're getting rolled by a dive, it's not the comp—it's probably your positioning or lack of counterplay.

Fat DPS Tanks Are Dominating

Emma and Thor are examples of what I'm calling “fat DPS” tanks. They're built tanky but play more like bruisers or even assassins. That shift in design philosophy is why characters like Emma are dominating—she can do everything. Damage? Check. Survivability? Check. Crowd control? Check.

The tanks that bring only durability (like Thing or Hulk) are being overshadowed by these hybrid characters. It's not that they're weak—it's just that you get so much more value from the current top picks.

Closing Thoughts: Evolving Chaos

This tier list is a snapshot. Marvel Rivals is new, evolving, and players are still learning what works. Buffs, nerfs, and player creativity will reshape this list in a few weeks. But for now, here's the state of tanks in Season 2:

S Tier: Groot (perma-ban), Emma (busted)

A Tier: Magneto (meta-proof), Venom (dive god), Hulk (solid pick)

B Tier: Thing (nerfed, outclassed), Thor (underrated sleeper)

C Tier: Penny Parker (buffed, but still last)

As always, play what you enjoy. No tier list can account for pure skill and coordination. But if you want to climb? Learn Groot. Or if you can't pick him, ban him—and then grab Emma.
