The Strongest League Starter Builds to Watch in Path of Exile 2's Next Patch

POE 2 May-26-2026 PST
The latest Path of Exile 2 patch notes have already sparked massive discussion across the community, and several builds are emerging as clear early favorites for the upcoming league. While balance changes did hit certain archetypes, a handful of builds escaped largely untouched and now look poised to dominate both league start and early endgame progression.

These are not necessarily the absolute strongest fully min-maxed builds with mirror-tier gear. Instead, these are the builds that look exceptional from a league-start perspective-strong on solo self-found gear, reliable during campaign progression, and capable of entering maps with minimal investment.

Three archetypes currently stand above the rest: Twisters, Ice Shot, and Grenade Crossbows. Each offers a different playstyle, unique scaling, and its own strengths and weaknesses. More importantly, all three builds provide excellent value relative to their expected POE currency investment, making them ideal choices for both casual players and competitive league starters alike.

Twisters Deadeye and Spirit Walker Look Incredible

Twisters already had a reputation as one of the best campaign and early mapping builds in the game, and the latest patch changes only reinforced that status.

For league start, the two standout ascendancies are clearly Deadeye and Spirit Walker. While Abyssal Lich can eventually scale Twisters into a terrifying endgame monster, it struggles badly early on and lacks the damage necessary for a smooth league start.

Deadeye and Spirit Walker solve those issues immediately.

The biggest advantage of Twisters is its absurd clear speed on low investment. Even on basic SSF gear, the build can wipe entire screens with ease. Among nearly every tested early-game build, Twisters arguably offers the best wide-screen map clear available on day one.

The build revolves around combining Whirlwind Slash with Twisters and often Barrage as well. This creates a highly explosive combo-based playstyle capable of deleting breach packs and dense map layouts with minimal gear.

Because Twisters is an attack-based build, it also scales naturally as gear improves. Attack builds traditionally scale extremely well in Path of Exile 2, and Twisters benefits heavily from improved weapons, attack speed, and projectile scaling.

However, the build does come with some notable drawbacks.

Twisters Has One Major Problem: Button Bloat

The biggest issue with Twisters is that it will never truly become a one-button build.

Early on, players frequently juggle:

Whirlwind Slash

Barrage

Twisters

War Banner

Ice-Tipped Arrows

Dodge rolls for Spirit Walker variants

That creates a fairly busy gameplay loop, especially for players who prefer simpler builds.

Spirit Walker makes this even more complicated because its Owl ascendancy rewards dodge rolling to gain extra projectiles. That means optimal gameplay often involves dodge rolling before executing the combo rotation.

Another weakness is movement feel. Twisters scales more heavily from attack speed than movement speed, meaning the build can feel clunky in indoor maps or tight corridors. Open maps feel fantastic, but narrow layouts require more careful aiming and positioning.

Defensively, Twisters can also feel fragile early in progression. Since players frequently dash directly into enemy packs before setting up their combo, deaths can happen quickly without sufficient attack speed or preparation.

Still, if players can handle the higher button count and more active gameplay, Twisters looks like one of the strongest overall league starters available next patch.

Ice Shot Remains One of the Best Mapping Builds in POE 2

It should surprise absolutely nobody that Ice Shot Deadeye still looks incredible.

Despite its popularity and dominance, the build avoided any meaningful endgame nerfs in the latest patch notes. As a result, it remains one of the strongest mapping builds across nearly every budget level.

The gameplay loop is also extremely satisfying. Ice Shot combined with freeze mechanics and Herald of Ice explosions creates one of the smoothest and most visually rewarding clearing experiences in the game.

What truly separates Ice Shot from many other builds is its scaling potential.

Bow builds scale differently than most archetypes because additional arrows dramatically improve both clear speed and damage output. Going from three arrows to six arrows creates a massive power spike, and the new patch introduces additional arrow modifiers on quivers, pushing scaling even further.

Endgame Ice Shot builds could realistically reach six or more arrows consistently, turning already strong clear into complete screen-wide destruction.

Snipe Makes Bossing Extremely Easy

Ice Shot also benefits from the incredible power of Snipe for bossing.Even on basic SSF gear, players can already one-shot many early map bosses using Snipe setups. The latest patch actually buffed Snipe's endgame damage, making pinnacle bossing look even stronger moving forward.

Unlike Twisters, Ice Shot also becomes an extremely low-button build in endgame.

Once properly geared, the build transitions into a mostly one-button playstyle for mapping, with occasional secondary skills for bossing. That simplicity alone makes it very appealing for players who dislike combo-heavy gameplay.

There are still weaknesses, however.

Ice Shot's Early Campaign Is Slower

Bow builds have traditionally struggled during the early campaign, and Ice Shot is no exception.

The recent patch slightly reduced Snipe damage during leveling, meaning bosses may require additional rotations or follow-up attacks before dying.

Fortunately, this nerf appears fairly minor overall. Once players unlock higher gem levels and reach proper Ice Shot scaling, the build becomes extremely smooth again.

Like most evasion-based builds, Ice Shot can also feel squishy early on before proper defensive layers are established. Thankfully, evasion plus energy shield setups still appear very strong in the new patch.

Overall, Ice Shot remains one of the safest and strongest all-around choices for players wanting exceptional mapping with simple gameplay.

Grenades and Crossbows Continue to Dominate

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the patch notes was how little changed for grenade and crossbow builds.

Many players expected heavy nerfs because grenade builds already rank among the best speedrunning and progression setups in the game. Instead, most of their strongest tools survived untouched.

Several ascendancies work well here:

Deadeye

Tactician

Spirit Walker

Witch Hunter

Each offers slightly different strengths depending on whether players prioritize speed, utility, or survivability.

Grenades excel because they maintain strong performance throughout the entire game. From Act 1 through early mapping, progression feels consistently powerful.

Stormblast Bolts and Galvanic Charge Are Still Amazing

Two major skills continue to carry crossbow builds:

Stormblast Bolts

Galvanic Charge

Stormblast Bolts still delivers absurd single-target damage capable of deleting pinnacle bosses, while Galvanic Charge remains one of the strongest clearing skills in the game.

Grenades also benefit heavily from solo self-found environments. One player even completed some of the hardest Zesh content in under 18 hours using only SSF grenade gear.

The introduction of new weapon base types may further improve the archetype as well, potentially opening up additional scaling options.

One Big Nerf Did Arrive

There was one notable nerf: Arjun's Metal.

Previously, the item provided a 100% chance for explosive bolts to trigger additional crossbow interactions. That chance has now dropped to 25%.

Thankfully, this mostly affects high-end crossbow scaling rather than early progression. Day-one grenade builds remain incredibly strong despite the nerf.

The largest remaining weakness is mana sustain. Grenades consume huge amounts of mana at higher skill levels, forcing players to invest into mana solutions fairly early.

Like the other evasion-based builds discussed, grenade setups can also feel somewhat fragile before obtaining proper defensive gear.

Final Thoughts

Based on the current patch notes, Twisters, Ice Shot, and Grenade Crossbows all look poised to dominate the next Path of Exile 2 league. Players preparing their league-start economy are already stockpiling POE exalted orbs in anticipation of these builds becoming some of the most popular and efficient options for early progression.

Twisters offers unmatched early map clear and explosive combo gameplay. Ice Shot delivers smooth, satisfying one-button mapping with incredible scaling. Grenades remain one of the fastest and most reliable progression builds in the game.

Each build has its own learning curve and weaknesses, but all three appear capable of carrying players comfortably from league start into high-end content with relatively low investment.

Unless additional balance changes arrive before launch, these archetypes are likely to define the early meta for Path of Exile 2's upcoming patch.
