Path of Exile 2's Huge 0.5.0 Patch Brings a New Campaign, Endgame Overhaul, and Long-Awaited Build Guide

POE 2 May-16-2026 PST

Path of Exile 2 (POE 2) is an action role-playing game (ARPG) developed and published by Grinding Gear Games. It's a direct sequel to Path of Exile, one of the most popular free-to-play ARPGs, known for its deep and complex gameplay systems, vast world-building, and strong focus on player-driven economy and progression. Path of Exile 2 featuring fast-paced combat, character progression, and loot-based mechanics. It emphasizes player skill, choice, and the collection of powerful items while exploring large, interconnected worlds. Players will create characters by selecting from various classes and customizing their skills, attributes, and equipment. Collect powerful weapons, armor, Path of Exile 2 Orbs, and items to improve their characters. It will also have a player-driven economy with trading and crafting systems, allowing players to buy and sell items in a robust marketplace.

Grinding Gear Games has officially unveiled Path of Exile 2's massive 0.5.0 content update, titled Return of the Ancients, and it's shaping up to be one of the most significant patches the action RPG has seen so far. More than just another seasonal refresh, this update introduces an entirely new campaign chapter, sweeping endgame improvements, two fresh Ascendancies, powerful new items, and one of the most requested features from the community: an in-game build guide system.

Even more importantly, this marks the final major content patch before the development team shifts its primary focus toward Path of Exile 2's full 1.0 launch, expected sometime after ExileCon in November. While balance updates and smaller fixes will continue, Return of the Ancients represents the last major expansion players can expect before the road to full release begins.

Enter the Runes of Aldur Campaign

At the heart of patch 0.5.0 is a brand-new campaign experience called Runes of Aldur. This story follows Farrow, a man obsessed with reviving the ancient and mysterious art of Ezomyte Runesmithing. Naturally, players are pulled into his dangerous quest, exploring unfamiliar lands, uncovering forgotten runes, and confronting enemies awakened by ancient magic.

Throughout the campaign, players will discover opportunities to inscribe runes and symbols onto artifacts and equipment, unlocking powerful bonuses. However, tampering with this ancient magic comes at a price each inscription can stir nearby undead forces, creating dynamic encounters that may even adapt based on the runes you choose.

A key mechanic introduced during the campaign is the Runic Ward, a protective enchantment that allows players to survive one otherwise fatal blow. More advanced versions of this effect can offer even greater protection, though they may come with meaningful trade-offs.

As Farrow advances his understanding of rune magic, players will gain access to deeper customization systems, allowing them to imbue runic power directly into equipment and even active skills. This adds another strategic layer to Path of Exile 2's already deep build-crafting system.

Expedition Expands Into the Seas

The update also significantly expands the Expedition League experience in the endgame. Once players reach the southern section of the Atlas, they'll gain access to expanded Logbook exploration, opening up entirely new oceanic regions.

These sea-based maps introduce fresh environmental hazards, hidden treasures, and challenging new bosses. After completing an introductory questline, players can continue exploring these procedurally generated maritime zones endlessly, making this one of the most ambitious expansions to Expedition content so far.

Across the campaign and endgame additions, players can expect:

Over 30 new monsters

Multiple new questlines

More than 100 new runes

Over 30 rune modifiers

New endgame maps

Additional currencies and crafting materials

Massive Endgame Revamp Makes the Atlas Easier to Navigate

One of the biggest highlights of Return of the Ancients is a complete overhaul of Path of Exile 2's endgame Atlas system.

Previously, many players found the sprawling Atlas overwhelming and difficult to follow. Patch 0.5.0 addresses this by introducing a new Fortress storyline immediately after the campaign, helping players transition more naturally into endgame progression.

The Atlas itself has been redesigned to offer greater freedom of exploration, allowing players to move in multiple directions rather than feeling locked into narrow progression paths.

The Atlas passive tree is also receiving substantial improvements, especially around league-specific nodes. These changes are designed to offer more flexibility and allow players to customize how different endgame mechanics appear and reward them.

Meet the New Atlas Masters

A major new feature is the introduction of Atlas Masters, three powerful mentors who offer specialized progression systems.

Players can choose to train under any of these masters, unlocking unique bonuses and perks as they level up. Importantly, there's no permanent commitment players can swap between Masters depending on their goals or preferred playstyle.

While these benefits can be substantial, they often require meaningful sacrifices or resource investments, adding another strategic layer to endgame planning.

Delirium, Breach, and Ritual Receive Major Updates

Grinding Gear Games isn't neglecting older league content, either. Three fan-favorite systems Delirium, Breach, and Ritual are each getting significant updates.

Every league now includes a dedicated questline designed to guide players through its mechanics more naturally. In addition, each system has been adjusted mechanically, aiming to improve pacing, accessibility, and long-term replayability.

Patch 0.5.0 also introduces two brand-new Ascendancies

Spirit Walker (Huntress)

The Spirit Walker channels ancient Azmerian spirits, allowing players to summon powers tied to three symbolic creatures:

Stag: unleashes stampeding attack waves

Owl: enhances projectiles with feather attacks and faster speed

Bear: mauls enemies, slams the ground, and applies debuffs

Players can specialize in one spirit or eventually combine their powers through hidden Ascendancy nodes. One especially exciting late-game ability allows players to Tame Beast Bosses, temporarily recruiting defeated bosses as allies in battle.

Martial Artist (Monk)

The Martial Artist Ascendancy focuses on mastering mystical Hollow techniques, granting exceptional control over battlefield flow.

Abilities include:

Manifesting spiritual objects like damage-dealing bells

Creating stone defenses to reduce incoming damage

Embedding runes directly into the character's body rather than equipment

One of the most intriguing final nodes, Way of the Stonefist, transforms gloves into an entirely new item base with stronger modifiers.

Powerful New Items Await

As expected, the patch also introduces a wide range of new gear.

Standout additions include:

The Raven's Flock: ideal for minion builds, allowing players to summon a deadly swarm of ravens using Mad Flight

Horror's Flight: gloves that grant Fear Incarnate stacks and unlock Crushing Fear, a chaos-based melee attack

Voices Jewel: an exceptionally powerful jewel that can add up to four additional Jewel sockets, dramatically increasing build flexibility

In-Game Build Guides Finally Arrive

Perhaps the most celebrated addition in patch 0.5.0 is the arrival of integrated build guides.

Players will now be able to import custom build files directly into the game. Once loaded, the guide can visually indicate:

Which passive nodes to allocate

Which Ascendancy choices to make

Recommended Skill Gems

Key gearing milestones

This eliminates the need to constantly alt-tab to websites like Maxroll.gg, making build-following much smoother for new and veteran players alike.

Quality-of-Life Improvements Round Out the Patch

Additional quality-of-life upgrades include:

Improved campaign navigation with visual objective indicators like glowing trails and moving environmental clues

Better endgame UI progress tracking

The return of Challenges

Shift-click item price checking in the marketplace

Mod pricing toggles for easier trading

Release Date

All of these changes arrive in Path of Exile 2 on May 29, with full patch notes scheduled to be released on May 21.

For fans eager to see what the future of Path of Exile 2 looks like before full launch, Return of the Ancients may be the game's biggest and most transformative update yet.
