Getting into Details
If you look at the Stats of the Great Axe (The Abyss), it has a unique perk called Draken Blade that converts the entire damage to Void. It allows you to scale the damage from Intelligence.
Artifacts such as weapons offer even a second perk. In the Great Axe, the second perk would be The Abyss which deals 20% additional damage when your mana is below 100%. Every Artifact has 6 perks and can be unlocked via Quests & Upgrades.
Quests & Upgrades
Once you obtain an Artifact, you’ll need to unlock its perks through specific quests, and every one of those quests has a requirement of first completing relevant sub-quests for each perk.
Speaking of upgrades, every artifact’s 5th perk can be a perk of your choice. However, you’ll first need to take the following items to a Gypsum Kilm: 1 Weapon Matrix, 500 Dark Matter, 5 Gypsum Orbs, and a Crafting Mod.

Pestilence, a Blunderbuss weapon which can be obtained from the PVP Rewards Track. Boltcaster, a Bow weapon which can be obtained from TBA (Season 4). The Abyss, a Great Axeweapon which can be obtained from Closing Corrupted Breaches. Serenity, a Great Sword weapon which can be obtained from PVP Rewards Track.
Freya's Francisca, a Hatchet weapon which can be obtained from The Blighted Greenskeeper - Garden of Genesis. Inferno, a Fire Staff which can be obtained from Commander Marius - Empyrean Forge. Odo, a Flail weapon which can be obtained from Vanash-Elysian. Deep Freeze, an Ice Gauntlet which can be obtained from TBA (Season 4).
Vengeance, a Life Staff which can be obtained from TBA (Season 4). The Mechanic, a Musket weapon which can be obtained from Toy Maker Phthah - Elysian Wilds. Finisher, a Rapier weapon which can be obtained from Montrapala the Unrules - Elysian Wilds. Scorpion's Sting, a Spear weapon which can be obtained from Scorpio Supernal - Brimstone Sands.
The Butcher, a Sword weapon which can be obtained from Zhou Taiying - Mutated Dynasty Shipyard. Life Taker, a Void Gauntlet which can be obtained from Pugnacious Purutu - Elysian Wilds. Spark of Mjolnir, a Warhammer weapon which can be obtained from Chardis - Lazarus Instrumentality.

Unyielding, a Heavy equipment which can be obtained from the PVP Reward Track. Grey Wizard's Hat, a Light equipment which can be obtained from Closing Corrupted Breaches. Djinn Headwrap, a Medium equipment which can be obtained from Beasts in Elysian Wild.
Chest
Feather Weight, a Light equipment which can be obtained from Ner’Mur – Elysian Wilds. Nimble Coat, a Medium equipment which can be obtained from PVP Reward Track. Void Dark Plate, a Heavy equipment which can be obtained from Nereid in Barnacles & Black Powder Expedition.
Gloves
Quickdraw Gloves, a Light equipment which can be obtained from the Season 4 Season Pass. Ghoul Gloves, a Medium equipment which can be obtained from Overgrown Guardian or Adiana’s Chosen Beast. Magnetic Gauntlets, a Heavy equipment which can be obtained from Isabella in Tempest’s Heart Expedition.
Legs
Attuned Leather Pants, a Medium equipment which can be obtained from Main Story Quest – The End of New Eden. Freedom, a Heavy equipment which can be obtained from PVP Reward Track. Koya's Knee Guards, a Light equipment which can be obtained from TBA (Season 4).
Boots
Trumble Feetwrap, a Light equipment which can be obtained from the Season 3 Reward Track. Winged Leather Shoes, a Medium equipment which can be obtained from TBA (Season 4). The Unmoved, a Heavy equipment which can be obtained from TBA (Season 4).
