Elementalist Is the Most Popular Ascendancy in 3.29
After four weeks, Elementalist is the most-played Ascendancy among level 95+ characters, holding approximately 18% of the player share. However, its popularity is especially interesting because players are not concentrating on just one skill.
Penance Brand Ignite remains one of the most popular Elementalist setups, accounting for roughly one-fifth of Elementalist characters. Ethereal Knives, Winter Orb, Vaal Reap, and Corrupting Fever builds also have significant representation.
The main reason behind this flexibility is the Ascendancy's powerful Golem package. Liege of the Primordial is used by almost all Elementalist characters, providing a broad collection of useful bonuses.
Lightning Golem offers attack and cast speed as well as valuable mana regeneration, Flame Golem provides damage and area-of-effect scaling, while Stone Golem supplies defensive and life regeneration benefits.
This makes Elementalist an excellent choice for players who want an Ascendancy capable of solving multiple problems without being locked into one specific build.
Mana Changes Make Golem Utility Even More Valuable
One of the less obvious reasons behind Elementalist's success is the league's mana system changes.
Path of Exile 3.29 shifted away from the old reduced mana cost system toward mana cost efficiency. Unlike the previous system, stacking efficiency suffers from diminishing returns. The biggest new addition in 3.29 is undoubtedly Luminary, the third Ascendancy option for Scion. It currently sits just behind Elementalist at around 15% popularity among high-level characters.
Luminary is fundamentally different from traditional Ascendancies because it is closely tied to the league's Mercenaries of Truth system. Players effectively need to find the right Mercenary options to unlock the Ascendancy's full potential.
This created mixed reactions during the first few days of the league. Early Luminary characters could feel significantly weaker when players had poor Mercenary choices. However, GGG addressed some of these early problems, while players gradually discovered stronger combinations.
As knowledge spread, Luminary's popularity increased dramatically.
The Best Luminary Builds Can Be Extremely Powerful
The most successful Luminary setups currently combine Flame Link with powerful Mercenary options. This approach allows the player character to become extremely defensive while the Mercenary provides a huge portion of the damage.
Life stacking and Block can make the main character exceptionally durable, while the Mercenary can deliver devastating offensive power.
The progression of Luminary's popularity demonstrates how quickly the community has adapted. The Ascendancy represented roughly 8% of characters early in Week One, but its share nearly doubled over the following weeks.
This suggests Luminary could become one of the most important Ascendancies to watch in future leagues. Its enormous scaling potential may also make it a balancing challenge for GGG in upcoming patches.
Winter Orb Leads the Skill Meta
When looking at the most popular skills in Curse of the Allflame, Winter Orb stands at the top.
The skill received substantial buffs in 3.29, and players quickly found ways to take advantage of its improved performance. Occultist is particularly popular for Winter Orb, helping push the Ascendancy into third place overall.
Righteous Fire remains remarkably consistent at around 6% usage, continuing its long-standing position as one of Path of Exile's most reliable builds.
Beyond the top skills, the meta becomes much more evenly distributed. Spell builds received considerable attention thanks to this league's balance changes, while Spectres provide strong representation for minion players. Flicker Strike, Cyclone Shockwave, and Death's Oath also remain relevant options.
New Ascendancy Nodes Have Mixed Results
Not every 3.29 Ascendancy change has been successful.
Inquisitor received a new notable designed to improve spell critical strike scaling based on the character's main-hand weapon. However, its overall popularity dropped from around 4% in the previous league to only 1% in 3.29, and only a tiny portion of those players use the new notable.
Occultist also received a new notable, but it has seen similarly limited adoption.
Assassin, however, tells a completely different story. Its popularity increased from roughly 2% to 5%, and approximately three-quarters of Assassin builds are using the new Bifocation notable.
This makes Assassin one of the clearest winners among the new Ascendancy changes.
Chaos Inoculation Makes a Huge Comeback
Another major trend in the 3.29 meta is the return of Chaos Inoculation (CI).
CI usage among level 95+ characters increased from approximately 17% in the previous league to 25% in Curse of the Allflame.
Several factors explain this resurgence. Many spell builds naturally occupy areas of the passive tree close to CI, and the league's spell buffs have encouraged more players to experiment with Energy Shield-based defenses.
At the same time, several popular life-stacking builds received significant nerfs. Changes affecting items such as Rathpith Globe and other life-scaling tools weakened the previously dominant life-stacking archetype.
As a result, Energy Shield has regained considerable ground in the defensive meta.
What Could Change in Path of Exile 3.30?
The current 3.29 meta could provide important clues about the future direction of Path of Exile. Elementalist's extremely broad utility makes it a potential target for balance adjustments, while Luminary's enormous scaling potential could prove even more difficult to balance.
Winter Orb is another skill worth monitoring after its substantial buffs, while the continued growth of CI suggests Energy Shield builds may remain important.
