Summary
Path of Exile 2’s major 0.5.5 content update, titled Forbidden Rites, officially launches on September 4, 2026, at 1PM PDT. This mid-cycle update introduces a brand-new event league, a complete quality-of-life rework for the Trial of Chaos, permanent core game mechanic additions, and dozens of endgame balancing tweaks. With new progression opportunities and increased resource demands, POE2 Currency can also play an important role in preparing for the updated content. Paired with confirmed 2026 Gamescom roadmap details, this patch lays critical groundwork for the game’s monumental 1.0 full launch, with no campaign skip feature planned and massive endgame progression improvements in development.
Forbidden Rites Event League: New Fresh Economy Gameplay
The headline feature of the 0.5.5 update is the limited-time Forbidden Rites event league, which launches with a brand-new fresh economy for all participants. Players start fresh with new characters, while all existing Early Access and Runes of Aldur league characters remain intact and playable.
The league centers on Ritual encounters spread throughout the entire campaign. Unlike endgame Rituals, campaign versions drop leveling-focused rewards, including crafting currency and early-game equipment to smooth out early progression. A unique world map mechanic spawns clustered Ritual Effigies twice per Act and once per Interlude, directly tied to area boss fights.
Defeating these boss-linked Rituals chains enemy encounters across adjacent areas, creating escalating difficulty waves. Successful completion lets players spend accumulated Tribute to obtain powerful unique items. The league supports Standard, Hardcore, and Solo Self-Found modes, with Hardcore deaths transferring progress to the Standard Forbidden Rites league.
Exclusive League Challenge Rewards
Forbidden Rites features eight exclusive challenges with limited-time cosmetic rewards unavailable in permanent game modes. Completing 2, 4, 6, and 8 challenges unlocks Locust Footprints, Locust Swarm Finisher Effect, Wildwood Guardian Pet, and Wildwood Affliction Level-up Effect respectively.
All completed challenges reward Forbidden Rites Totem decoration fragments for player hideouts. The permanent totem pole displays total challenge completion count, serving as a unique league progression trophy. Party gameplay also receives upgrades, letting all team members earn personalized Ritual Tribute rewards during group encounters.
Massive Trial of Chaos Quality-of-Life Overhaul
0.5.5 delivers a long-awaited full rework for the Trial of Chaos, fixing core pain points that plagued the game’s most frustrating endgame content. The biggest change allows players to pause and resume runs at any time, eliminating forced full-run completion and enabling flexible gameplay sessions.
Every room now features a reward chest, reducing punishment for in-run deaths and preserving partial progression loot. The trial now scales inherent bonuses based on area level, offsetting missing Atlas Passive bonuses and boosting monster pack size, item quality, and exceptional drop chances.
Developers simplified trial modifiers with clearer stat displays, reduced overall difficulty scaling, and balanced enemy spawn mechanics. Elite monsters now pose greater threat but offer far better rewards. Boss arena redesigns, faster room transitions, and improved elevator responsiveness streamline the previously clunky dungeon flow.
The update also adds 18 new Soul Cores and reworks nearly all existing Soul Core bonuses, buffing damage scaling, resistance values, and build-specific utility to expand viable build diversity.
