Summary
The Gas Grenade Pathfinder is one of the most satisfying and effective league starters for Path of Exile 2. It excels at area clear, handles mechanics like Ritual, Simulacrum, and Abyss Overrun maps with ease, and melts bosses through stacking poison damage over time. This build has been tested and updated for patch 0.5.5, making it a solid choice heading into the new league. If you're looking to accelerate your gearing or skip the early grind, you can always buy POE2 Currency from trusted sources—but even without it, this build performs exceptionally well on a budget. If you enjoy dropping persistent damage zones and watching enemies melt from stacked poisons, this build is for you.
Why Play Gas Grenade Pathfinder?
The build revolves around Gas Grenade, which creates poison clouds on the ground. These clouds linger, stack on top of each other, and inflict poison on any monster that enters the area. The area coverage is massive, especially when using the Encroaching Ground support gem .
Key Strengths
Excellent area coverage – Great for Simulacrum, Ritual, and Abyss Overrun maps
High single-target damage – Stack clouds to fish for critical poisons
Great Pathfinder quality of life – Unaffected by slows (Relentless Pursuit), reduced movement penalty, cannot be heavy stunned while sprinting
Pre-stacking ability – Drop clouds where monsters will spawn and watch them die instantly
0.5.5 Changes Affecting This Build
Several adjustments in patch 0.5.5 impact this build :
Change | Impact |
Overwhelming Toxicity: 50% less Poison Duration (was 35%) | Less impactful for Gas Grenade than other poison builds; can still maintain max stacks |
Running Assault: 30% less Movement Speed Penalty (was 50%) | Slight nerf but still valuable |
Plaguefinger: Cannot inflict Elemental Ailments | Irrelevant for this build (we didn't inflict them anyway) |
Ghost Dance: Now regenerates ES over time (2% of Evasion per second) | Defensive adjustment; still functional |
Deflection formula adjusted | Now worth investing on hybrid builds |
Bottom line: The build is still extremely effective in 0.5.5. No direct nerfs to grenades means boss damage remains strong .
Core Mechanics
How Gas Grenade Works
Gas Grenade creates poison clouds on the ground that:
Last 6 seconds (extendable to 9 seconds with Persistent Ground III)
Inflict poison on monsters within the cloud every 2 seconds
Stack on top of each other—more clouds = more poisons
Bypass the normal limit of 6 clouds when using Persistent Ground III
The Persistent Ground III Interaction
This support gem is the backbone of the build:
Prevents clouds from being destroyed (they can only expire normally)
Increases cloud duration from 6 to 9 seconds
Bypasses the 6-cloud limit – you can drop as many clouds as you have grenades
This means you can cover entire arenas with poison clouds. In Simulacrum, you can blanket the whole room before enemies even spawn .
Why We Don't Explode Clouds
The build uses Explosive Shot to detonate grenades for faster clear. However, detonating the gas cloud causes it to disappear instantly—it no longer applies poison over time .
Because this is a poison scaling build (scaling poison magnitude), we prefer the cloud to linger rather than explode for front-loaded fire damage. Persistent Ground III ensures clouds stay even if they'd normally be destroyed.
Crit Scaling Strategy
Gas Grenade works with critical hits. The build uses a "fishing" strategy:
Drop multiple clouds on a boss
Each cloud rolls its own crit chance independently
When a cloud crits, it inflicts critical poisons for its full duration
Only ~25% crit chance is needed; Garacon's Resolve support can cap crit at 50% with bifocation
Support Gems (Priority Order)
Priority | Support Gem | Effect |
1 | Persistent Ground III | Prevents cloud destruction; extends duration; bypasses cloud limit |
2 | Deadly Poison | 40% more damage for poison (100% more magnitude, 30% less hit damage) |
3 | Arcadi's Lust | 8% more damage per poison on enemy (up to 40% more) |
4 | Encroaching Ground | Area grows over time; massive coverage |
5 | Elemental Armament | Damage multiplier (flexible slot) |
Flexible Slot Options
Verona's Siege: More area of effect
Garacon's Resolve: Crit bifocation; very strong if you have currency
Pathfinder Ascendancy
This build relies heavily on the Pathfinder ascendancy, which is why it's taken on the Ranger base .
Ascendancy Order
Overwhelming Toxicity: +1 to max poison stacks; less poison duration (50% in 0.5.5)
Path Seeker: Flask sustain and utility
Relentless Pursuit: Unaffected by slows—massive quality of life
Running Assault: 30% less movement penalty; cannot be heavy stunned while sprinting
The Trade-off: Herald of Plague
In previous patches, Pathfinders had built-in poison proliferation. In 0.5.5, you need to use Herald of Plague for proliferation .
Old Pathfinder: Built-in proliferation + used Withering Presence
New Pathfinder: Must find 30 extra Spirit for Herald of Plague, but gains 5 extra passive points from the ascendancy branch
Recommendation: Run Herald of Plague. It prevents backtracking and body-blocking in narrow corridors. If you prefer to skip it, you'll need to play more carefully around loot and positioning.
