Summary
Path of Exile 2 is finally approaching its full release. GGG has confirmed that PoE 2 1.0 will launch on December 11 as a free-to-play game, while the Gamescom trailer revealed the new Duelist class and sword gameplay. Players can also register ahead of launch to qualify for exclusive cosmetic rewards.
This release is a major milestone, but it is important to understand what 1.0 actually includes and which unrevealed content should not yet be treated as confirmed. To stay prepared, buy POE2 Currency and build a flexible stash that lets you adapt once all the details are revealed.
PoE 2 1.0 Release Date: December 11
GGG's 90-second Gamescom trailer confirmed December 11 as the official PoE 2 1.0 release date.
The trailer also showed what appears to be content from a new chapter, including a new environment and enemies. More importantly, GGG confirmed several features players have been waiting for: a new character, a new weapon type, and the free-to-play launch model.
The December 11 release represents the completion of PoE 2's story content. However, GGG has clarified that the definition of 1.0 does not necessarily mean every planned class will be available at launch.
New Duelist Class and Sword Gameplay
The biggest character reveal is the Duelist, accompanied by the introduction of sword-focused gameplay.
What the Duelist Can Do
The revealed sword animations show several combat styles, including:
Fast slashing attacks
Thrusting attacks
Whirlwind-style attacks
Parrying and counter-attacks
Movement and teleportation effects
A teleport-like effect associated with death
The Duelist's background also appears to have a connection to the original Path of Exile Duelist. The showcased environment features an arena and a post-Cataclysmic atmosphere, although the exact story connection remains to be confirmed.
Some of the animations resemble existing enemies and skills. Players may notice similarities to the Count's movements, the large whirlwind from Act 4, and even Warrior-related animations.
However, don't assume these are finalized abilities. The showcase footage appears to use largely unconfigured gameplay modules, so animations, mechanics, and balance can still change before 1.0.
Are Swords Exclusive to the Duelist?
No. PoE 2 does not permanently assign one weapon type to one class.
Classes have different starting weapons, passive-tree positions, and Ascendancy paths, but this does not mean a class can only use its starting weapon. Therefore, the Duelist's sword reveal should not be interpreted as a sword-only class restriction.
This also leaves plenty of room for other classes to eventually build around swords.
PoE 2 1.0 Will Be Free-to-Play
One of the most important parts of the 1.0 announcement is the free-to-play model.
Players should distinguish this from the registration campaign. Free-to-play describes the game's release model, while registration rewards are separate promotional cosmetics for eligible players.
This makes December 11 particularly important for players who have been waiting to experience the completed version without purchasing the base game.
PoE 2 Registration Rewards
GGG has also opened registration ahead of the full release. Players who meet the requirements can receive a collection of cosmetic rewards.
What Rewards Can You Get?
The announced reward categories include:
Head effects
Weapon effects
Portal effects
Back decorations
Pets
These rewards are separate from the game's free-to-play status. In other words, registering is not what makes PoE 2 free-to-play; registration is tied to the promotional rewards.
If you want the available cosmetics, complete the registration requirements before the applicable deadline.
