Summary

Patch 0.5.5 may not deliver the massive balance shake-up some players expected, but that does not mean there is nothing worth playing. Several powerful and relatively budget-friendly builds are currently available, making them excellent choices for both Solo Self-Found and Trade League players.

The important point is that the source material expects some of these builds to change significantly—or potentially be nerfed—by the time Path of Exile 2 reaches 1.0. If you want to experience some of the game's strongest and most entertaining setups before that happens, these five builds are worth considering. To get them online quickly, buy POE2 Currency and secure the gear and gems you need before any balance changes arrive.

1. Spirit Walker Beastmaster

Build Concept

The Spirit Walker Beastmaster is built around one unusual idea: taming powerful unique beasts and turning them into your primary source of damage.

The centerpiece is the Silverback from Act 3. After obtaining the monkey, you can continue upgrading it by finding stronger versions in maps. The Silverback already has a strong critical-hit foundation, and the build focuses heavily on increasing its offensive potential.

With the right modifiers, the monkey can eventually reach an extremely high critical chance, allowing it to destroy map bosses, pinnacle bosses, and monster packs.

How to Level

During the campaign, begin with Twister and Whirling Slash. Once you reach Act 3 and can obtain the Silverback, transition into the Spirit Walker setup.

From there, your main objective is to strengthen the beast rather than constantly upgrading your own direct damage. Tablets can also be used to add rare modifiers to map bosses, creating opportunities to hunt for particularly powerful versions of the monkey.

The major advantage is simple: your minions do the fighting while you focus on movement and looting.

This build is especially attractive for players who want a low-maintenance playstyle and a relatively inexpensive entry point.

2. Chaos Lich

Build Concept

The Chaos Lich is one of the most straightforward choices on this list. Its core combination of Contagion and Essence Drain allows you to spread chaos damage through monster packs with relatively little investment.

You can obtain Contagion very early, followed by Essence Drain shortly afterward. This makes the build viable from the beginning of the campaign rather than requiring an expensive respec later.

Campaign and End Game

The build is designed to scale naturally through Acts 1–4 and into the endgame. Early progression requires relatively little investment, while your defensive layers can become significantly stronger as your character develops.

The gameplay generally revolves around using two skills rather than relying on a single attack. Spread the chaos effect through packs and let the damage-over-time mechanics clear enemies efficiently.

One of its biggest strengths is survivability. According to the source material, this is one of the tankiest low-investment options available, making it particularly suitable for players who dislike being constantly one-shot.

For players who want a reliable starter that is easy to understand and capable of scaling into stronger end-game variants, Chaos Lich is a strong candidate.

3. Whirling Assault Martial Artist

Build Concept

If you enjoy spin-to-win gameplay, the Whirling Assault Martial Artist is an excellent choice.

The build centers around generating charges and then spending them on Falling Thunder. Early in the game, charge generation can require more active input, but the process becomes easier to automate as the build reaches the end game.

The typical rotation combines Whirling Assault and Falling Thunder, allowing you to clear packs quickly and potentially deliver enormous burst damage against bosses.

Leveling and End Game

You can begin leveling with Hollow Palm Technique, giving the character a distinctive bare-fist playstyle. Later, transition to a strong quarterstaff to make end-game damage scaling easier.

There is also an alternative end-game setup based around Ice Strike and Shattering Palm. This version offers faster gameplay, while the Falling Thunder variant provides more explosive damage when you successfully build up maximum charges.

The main attraction is its combination of mobility, burst damage, and relatively low investment requirements. However, it does require more active gameplay than the Beastmaster or Chaos Lich.

4. Run-and-Gun Witch Hunter

Core Skills

The Run-and-Gun Witch Hunter uses a crossbow and focuses on maintaining strong defensive layers while delivering consistent ranged damage.

The basic setup is easy to understand:

Galvanic Shards handle clearing.

Stormblast Bolts provide single-target damage.

This gives the character a straightforward combat structure: clear groups with Galvanic Shards, then switch to Stormblast Bolts when fighting bosses.

Strengths and Weaknesses

The build's major advantage is its defensive setup, particularly through Sorcery Ward. With the unique Sire of the Sea, its defensive potential becomes even stronger. The item is described as relatively accessible in Trade League while still being obtainable through farming in Solo Self-Found.

However, crossbow mechanics introduce one important drawback: reloading.

Reloading can interrupt your damage output, particularly against mobile bosses. Lineage Gems and improvements to crossbow reload mechanics can help reduce this problem, but players should still be prepared to manage their ammunition and positioning carefully.

If you have primarily used grenade-based Witch Hunter setups and want to experience a more traditional crossbow playstyle, this is a good time to try it.

5. Arctic Wolf Druid

Build Concept

The Arctic Wolf Druid focuses on fluid, combo-based gameplay and exceptionally strong freeze and crowd-control mechanics.

You can begin using the build almost immediately. Start with Shred, then obtain Talons and progress toward Lunar Assault in Clearfell. From there, the character can move rapidly through the campaign while maintaining excellent area control.

Why It Works

Freeze is the build's defining strength. It can make packs and even bosses considerably easier to control, while strong area-of-effect damage allows you to clear groups efficiently.

The build also has multiple survivability layers and can scale attack and movement speed to very high levels. This makes it particularly attractive for Solo Self-Found players who need a setup capable of generating strong damage without relying on expensive gear.

There is, however, one major weakness: range.

Because the build operates at close range, tanky rare monsters can force you directly into dangerous effects. Temporal Bubbles and other area-of-effect mechanics can become especially threatening when you are standing on top of an enemy. Against some bosses, you must kill them during your freeze window or quickly move away.

Mana can also become a major end-game problem, so resource management should be part of your build planning.

Which Build Should You Choose?

The five builds cover very different playstyles.

Choose Spirit Walker Beastmaster if you want a relaxed minion-focused character that lets your creatures do most of the work.

Choose Chaos Lich if survivability and simple progression are your priorities.

Choose Whirling Assault Martial Artist if you want fast melee combat and huge Falling Thunder burst damage.

Choose Run-and-Gun Witch Hunter if you prefer ranged combat and strong defensive layers.

Finally, choose Arctic Wolf Druid if you enjoy fast movement, freezing enemies, and combo-based gameplay.

All five are presented as relatively cost-effective options that can work in either Solo Self-Found or Trade League. Most importantly, the source material suggests that their current strength may not last forever. If you want to experience these builds in their present form, the period before 1.0 may be the ideal opportunity. To prepare quickly, POE2 Currency can help you fund the gear and gems you need before any changes arrive.
