Path of Exile 2 Duelist Arrives With 1.0

Path of Exile 2 is entering an exciting stage of development as Grinding Gear Games prepares for the game's 1.0 full release on December 11. The latest presentation introduced the highly anticipated Duelist class, alongside the new Sword weapon type and a combat system built around stances, combos, parrying, and fluid movement.

The Duelist is designed to feel completely different from existing Path of Exile 2 classes. Rather than simply relying on powerful individual attacks, the class focuses on flowing from one ability to another and switching between different combat stances.

New Sword Weapon Type and Ready Stance

One of the biggest additions is the Sword weapon type. Duelists can use one-handed swords, two-handed swords, or dual-wielded swords, with each setup offering a distinct gameplay style.

The central mechanic is Ready Stance. After using certain Duelist abilities, players can continue holding the skill button to prepare their blades for the next attack. A standard sword slash, for example, can transform into a powerful area-of-effect strike when used from Ready Stance.

Other skills interact with Ready Stance in different ways. Sand Scour can stun enemies and activate Sand Stance, allowing basic attacks to release sand disks. Perforate can also change depending on the active stance, creating drills, sand disks, or blood-based attacks.

This creates a combat system where players constantly chain abilities together instead of repeatedly using one skill.

Blood Stance, Sand Stance and Parrying

The Duelist becomes even more interesting when Blood Stance enters the rotation. Dual-wielding swords allows the class to parry enemy attacks, adding a defensive mechanic that is closely connected to offensive gameplay.

Bloodied Blade activates Blood Stance, causing attacks to generate powerful blood waves and increase bleeding effects. Hemorrhage can then accelerate bleeding before Rending Dash consumes accumulated blood loss for a massive bleed attack.

Parrying has also been significantly improved. Duelists using a shield can perform a special bash directly from Ready Stance, allowing players to parry enemies proactively rather than simply waiting for an attack.

This combination of defense, movement, and damage makes the Duelist one of the most mechanically complex classes revealed for Path of Exile 2.

Cyclone Returns in Path of Exile 2

Fans of classic Path of Exile combat will be happy to see Cyclone return with the Duelist.

However, Cyclone has received a major twist. Because the ability interacts with elemental and stance-based effects, players can create different versions of the iconic spinning attack.

Cyclone from Sand Stance produces sand disks, while Blood Stance adds blood effects. Lightning effects can also be incorporated through Blade Conduit and shocked ground. The developers even demonstrated the possibility of combining blood, sand, fire, ice, and lightning effects.

This gives Cyclone enormous build potential and could make it one of the most popular Duelist skills after launch.

Buried Blades Create New Build Possibilities

Another major Duelist mechanic is buried blades. Skills such as Earthrend can send blades through the ground, creating objects that can later be activated by other abilities.

Charged Slash can turn buried blades into miniature Tesla coils that deal lightning damage. Blade Plunge can cause multiple buried blades to explode, while Ready Stance can transform Earthrend into an entire wall of blades.

The combinations become even more powerful with Blood and Sand Stance. Sand can create sandstorms around buried blades, while Blood can create damaging blood pools.

This system provides a strong foundation for both area clearing and boss damage.

Two Powerful Duelist Endgame Builds

GGG also demonstrated two developer-created endgame builds.

The first is Bringer of Blades, which focuses heavily on Earthrend and buried blades. Blade Conduit adds lightning damage, while Sand Stance creates massive sand-based area damage. Rain of Steel can cover the battlefield with even more buried swords.

Interestingly, the developers built this setup without relying heavily on Unique items, demonstrating how powerful the core Duelist mechanics can be with standard equipment.

The second build, Scourge Walker, takes Cyclone in a completely different direction. Using Oro's Sacrifice, the build converts its damage toward fire and introduces Infernal Step.

Blood Stance is then combined with Cyclone to create a mixture of fire and bleeding damage. Additional support gems can cause enemies to explode into pieces of flesh, while Echoing Strikes creates additional Cyclones.

Neither demonstration even used an Ascendancy, meaning the final Duelist builds could become considerably stronger once the Ascendancy options are revealed.

Forbidden Rites Event Coming With 0.5.5

The Duelist isn't the only major addition coming to Path of Exile 2. The 0.5.5 update introduces the new Forbidden Rites event, which is based on the Ritual League.

Players will encounter Rituals throughout the campaign, defeat enemies, collect Tribute, and spend that Tribute on rewards. Unlike endgame Rituals, campaign encounters will primarily provide useful leveling equipment and crafting currency.

Special Ritual clusters will feature increasingly difficult boss encounters. Bosses defeated earlier in a cluster can return during later Rituals, eventually creating large multi-boss battles.

These special encounters will also provide access to Unique item rewards.

Ritual Gets Better Multiplayer Support

Forbidden Rites also improves Ritual multiplayer functionality.

Previously, only the player who created an area could spend Tribute, leaving party members unable to participate in the reward system. In 0.5.5, every party member earns their own Tribute and can spend it on their own rewards.

To prevent group farming from becoming excessively powerful, party members will have fewer shop options and will not be able to reroll their shops.

Wildwood Adds More Endgame Risk and Reward

At endgame, Ritual receives another important addition through Sacred Bloom. Players can use a Sacred Bloom to add a Wildwood entrance to an Atlas map.

Inside the Wildwood, players have limited time to collect different types of Wisps. Primal Wisps can turn normal enemies into magic monsters, Vivid Wisps add modifiers to rare monsters, and Wild Wisps increase item rarity.

The catch is that empowered monsters become significantly more dangerous. Players therefore have to decide how much difficulty they are willing to accept for better loot.

Trial of Chaos Gets a Massive Rework

The Trial of Chaos is also receiving one of its largest updates yet.

Players will be able to leave between rooms and resume their run later. Room objectives have been simplified, movement between rooms has been reduced, elevators have been improved, and modifiers have been rebalanced.

A new Wager Modifier system adds another layer of risk and reward. Some modifiers can dramatically increase difficulty while providing significantly better currency rewards.

Endgame Trial of Chaos runs can now continue all the way to Room 30, with rewards and difficulty increasing as players progress. Reaching later rooms can also provide a more reliable way to obtain Trialmaster fragments.

New Abyss Content and Expedition Changes

The 0.5.5 update also expands the Atlas with new Abyssal ravines. Players progress through connected maps while pushing back the Abyssal Legion, with the final map guaranteeing an Abyssal Boss encounter.

Expedition is also becoming a core part of the game. From Act 4 onward, players can encounter Expedition content, while endgame Expedition Tablets provide additional ways to invest into the mechanic.

These changes should create more reasons to explore different Atlas strategies instead of relying on a single farming method.

Path of Exile 2 1.0 Is Shaping Up to Be Huge

The Duelist reveal makes it clear that Path of Exile 2's 1.0 launch is aiming to deliver far more than a simple content update. New swords, stance mechanics, Cyclone, parrying, buried blades, powerful endgame builds, cheap Path of Exile 2 Currency, and new Ascendancies could dramatically expand the game's build diversity.

Before 1.0 arrives on December 11, players have the opportunity to experience Forbidden Rites and the extensive 0.5.5 improvements. With the Trial of Chaos rework, Abyss content, Expedition changes, and a fresh economy, the event could also provide an excellent reason for returning players to jump back into Wraeclast.

For Path of Exile 2 fans, the road toward 1.0 is becoming increasingly exciting—and the Duelist may be one of the most important additions yet.

Path of Exile 2 has revealed the Duelist for the upcoming 1.0 launch, bringing sword combat, stance mechanics, parrying, Cyclone, buried blades, and powerful new endgame builds.
