Summary
The Grinding Gear Games livestream has come and gone, delivering a mixed bag of exhilarating announcements and disappointing confirmations. On one hand, we finally got an in-depth look at swords and the Duelist playstyle—and they look absolutely phenomenal, with the kind of fluid, screen-clearing power that makes you want to buy POE2 Currency to gear one up immediately. On the other hand, the long-promised mega balance patch has been pushed to 1.0, leaving many players feeling let down.
This guide will break down everything you need to know about:
Patch 0.5.5 (arriving Friday, September 4th)
The Sword & Duelist mechanics coming in 1.0
The Trial of Chaos rework
The Forbidden Rights event league
What's missing from 0.5.5 and why it matters
Part 1: The Good – What's Actually Coming in Patch 0.5.5
1.1 The Forbidden Rights Event League (September 4th)
This is a one-month event league that replaces the current "Runes of Aldur" mechanic with a reimagined Ritual system.
Key Features:
Feature | Description |
Rituals in Every Map | Instead of Runes of Aldur, every zone now contains Ritual altars. |
Non-Unique Rewards | Rituals can drop leveling gear, not just uniques—making campaign progression smoother. |
Boss Ritual Chains | Special zones feature ritual altars that spawn bosses. Each kill in a ritual area adds that boss to the next ritual, allowing you to chain multiple bosses together in a single encounter. |
Difficulty Scaling | Chaining bosses in Act 1 will be extremely challenging, but the rewards (early uniques) can snowball your campaign. |
Individual Rewards | Every player in the party earns their own tribute and can purchase their own rewards—no more watching the host buy everything. |
Strategic Tip: If you can clear a 4-boss chain in Act 1, you'll walk away with uniques that can trivialize the rest of the campaign. Focus on building single-target damage early to take advantage of this.
1.2 Trial of Chaos – The Complete Rework
Previously one of the most hated systems in PoE 2, the Trial of Chaos has received a full overhaul. Here's what changed:
Gameplay Improvements:
Issue (Before) | Fix (Now) |
Stuck between rooms | You can leave between rooms—no more being trapped. |
Slow elevators | Elevators move faster and doors open quicker and from further away. |
Annoying non-combat objectives | More rooms focus on slaying enemies rather than tedious tasks. |
Pointless rewards | Chests between rooms now drop currency instead of useless corrupted gear. |
Unclear modifiers | All modifiers have been rebalanced with better descriptions. |
Chimera boss kiting | Arena is smaller—no more running up and down stairs. |
Endgame Expansion:
You can now push up to Room 30 for mega rewards.
Higher rooms drop fragments needed to fight the Trial Master.
New Soul Cores have been added to the reward pool.
Wager modifiers let you take big risks for big rewards.
Will it be fun now? The changes address almost every complaint the community had. It may not become your favorite activity, but it's no longer a chore you dread.
1.3 Other QoL & Endgame Additions
Change | Impact |
Arbiter of Divinity | Only need to kill twice to unlock all Atlas points. |
Wildwood Mechanic | Now in PoE 2! Adds a 4th wisp type (Sacred Wisps) that can juice your maps. Less powerful than PoE 1's version, but still a reward multiplier. |
Abyssal Ravines | New overworld map encounters with bosses at the end. |
Expedition Tablets | Added to the endgame pool (needed these last league). |
Elder Saga Removed | The toxic farming loop is gone. Good riddance. |
Part 2: The Star of the Show – Swords & Duelist (Coming in 1.0)
While swords won't arrive until Patch 1.0, the livestream gave us our most detailed look yet at how they'll play.
2.1 Core Philosophy: Flow
GGG's #1 priority with swords is flow—abilities should chain together smoothly. The Duelist isn't about clunky animations; it's about rhythm and momentum.
2.2 The Ready Stance Mechanic
This is the foundational mechanic for swords. You can channel a stance for extra power, and it interacts with numerous skills:
Stance Type | Effect |
Sand Stance | Enhances area-of-effect and mobility skills. |
Blood Stance | Enhances single-target damage and bleed applications. |
The stance system isn't as cumbersome as it first appeared. Activation conditions include:
Consuming a parry
Stunning an enemy
Gaining frenzy charges
As you level and build into the system, these conditions become easier to meet, smoothing out the gameplay significantly.
2.3 Key Sword Skills
Skill | Description |
Sword Dash | A fast mobility skill. Could replace talisman-wolf leap for campaign speed-running. |
Cyclone | The classic spin-to-win! Finally arriving after 2 years. Can combine with elemental grounds, bleeds, and sands simultaneously with proper build investment. |
World Cutter | A charged ultimate attack—think "sword Kamehameha." Charge up and unleash devastating slashes. |
Buried Blades | Throw blades into the ground. Use combos to fill rooms with them, then trigger elemental whirlwinds for screen-wide destruction. |
Charge Slashing | A lightning-based cleave attack. |
Flicker Strike | Exciting new iteration (Oro's Blade synergy teased). |
2.4 Combat Flow Example
A typical high-level combat loop might look like:
Enter Ready Stance → build power.
Use Buried Blades to saturate the area.
Trigger Blood Stance via a stun.
Detonate with World Cutter or elemental whirlwinds.
Clean up stragglers with Cyclone.
2.5 Important Caveat: Speed
The footage shown looked slower than current endgame builds. However, GGG confirmed:
All footage was recorded without ascendancy points (hidden before ExileCon).
Internally, swords are "very overpowered" and "destroy the campaign."
Verdict: Don't judge sword speed by the teaser. With proper ascendancy and gearing, the Duelist will likely rival—or surpass—current top-tier builds.
