Path of Exile 2 Update 0.5.5: Forbidden Rites Is Here

Grinding Gear Games is preparing a major new update for Path of Exile 2 with Content Update 0.5.5: Forbidden Rites. The update launches on September 4 at 1 PM PDT, introducing a brand-new event league alongside major changes to Ritual, Trial of Chaos, Expedition, the Atlas endgame, Soul Cores, user interface features, and numerous bug fixes.

For players looking for a reason to start a fresh character, Forbidden Rites is especially important. The new league provides a completely fresh economy while giving players new challenges, rewards, and mechanics to explore.

Forbidden Rites League Introduces a New Ritual Experience

The centerpiece of Update 0.5.5 is the Forbidden Rites event league. The King in the Mists and his cultists have expanded their influence throughout Wraeclast, creating Ritual encounters across the campaign.

Unlike standard endgame Ritual encounters, campaign Rituals are designed to help players level. They can provide useful currency for crafting equipment as well as additional gear, making the mechanic more valuable during the early stages of a new character.

Twice during each Act, and once during each Interlude, players can also discover special clusters of Ritual Effigies. These encounters are connected to area bosses. After defeating a boss Ritual, that boss is carried forward into the next Ritual, creating increasingly dangerous waves of boss encounters.

Completing the entire sequence allows players to spend their accumulated Tribute on Unique Items, giving the league a strong incentive to engage with Ritual from the beginning.

Forbidden Rites also includes eight league challenges. Players can unlock exclusive rewards such as Locust Footprints, the Locust Swarm Rare Finisher Effect, Wildwood Guardian Pet, and Wildwood Affliction Level-up Effect.

Ritual Gets Major Improvements for Endgame Players

Ritual itself is also receiving several important changes. Party members can now earn their own Ritual Tribute when participating in encounters. Each player receives a limited selection of rewards that can either be purchased or offered to the King in the Mists.

Another major addition is the Sacred Bloom reward. Sacred Blooms can add the Viridian Wildwood to a cluster of Atlas Maps. Inside the Wildwood, players can follow trails of Wisps and collect them. When they return to the Map, those Wisps empower monsters, making them stronger but also more rewarding.

Using multiple Ritual Tablets now has additional benefits. More than one Tablet can add another Altar to a Map while also increasing the quantity of Azmeri Wisps collected inside the Viridian Wildwood.

Trial of Chaos Becomes More Rewarding and Less Punishing

Update 0.5.5 also addresses several long-standing frustrations with the Trial of Chaos.

Previously, starting a run meant players had to finish the entire sequence before leaving. The new update allows players to leave at any point and resume the run later from the same room.

A reward chest has also been added to the end of every room. This means dying is less punishing because players no longer risk losing the entire collection of rewards from a long run.

The final rewards have also been streamlined. Trial of Chaos runs now primarily reward Currency and Soul Cores, while corrupted items have been removed from the reward pool.

The Trialmaster has received quality-of-life improvements as well. His time-stopping interruptions will happen much less frequently, while encounter doors and elevators have been redesigned to make movement between rooms faster and smoother.

17 New Soul Cores Expand Build Options

One of the most exciting additions in PoE 2 0.5.5 is a large collection of new Soul Cores.

The update introduces new Soul Cores from Jiquani, Atziri, and other sources, including effects focused on mana, energy shield, elemental damage, poison, bleed, ignite, freeze, critical damage, resistances, and penetration.

Several existing Soul Cores have also been significantly buffed or redesigned. For example, some now provide stronger maximum resistances, increased ailment magnitude, additional elemental penetration, or improved life and mana recovery.

These changes could have a major impact on Path of Exile 2 builds, especially for players experimenting with optimized endgame setups.

Expedition Moves Into the Core Game

Another major change is the transition of Runes of Aldur Expedition content into the core game.

Farrow, Dannig, and Expedition content will now be available through the Atlas in Standard League and Forbidden Rites. Players can encounter Expeditions from Act 4 onward.

Expedition Tablets provide additional ways to scale the mechanic. Using multiple Tablets can increase Expedition density, add Verisium Remnants, and eventually add additional Expeditions.

New Tablet modifiers can also increase explosive area of effect, improve Logbook drops, add bosses, or introduce additional Verisium Sentries.

This gives Expedition a permanent role in the PoE 2 endgame rather than keeping it exclusive to the Runes of Aldur League.

Major Path of Exile 2 Endgame Changes

The Atlas is receiving several important improvements in Update 0.5.5. Large Abyssal Ravines can now appear throughout the Atlas and guarantee Abyss encounters.

Corrupted Nexus Maps can also be retried after failure, while several major bosses have received resistance and vulnerability adjustments. These changes should create clearer opportunities for players to build around specific damage types.

Trial of Sekhemas is also getting inherent bonuses starting at Area Level 65. These bonuses compensate for Atlas Passive bonuses not applying inside the Trial.

Delirium is being adjusted as well. The number of Maps that Delirium Fog spreads to from a Grand Mirror has been reduced, while Delirium Monster Pack scaling has been changed beyond 100% Deliriousness.

Quality-of-Life Improvements and Bug Fixes

Beyond gameplay systems, Update 0.5.5 introduces several useful interface improvements. The Currency Exchange window now includes a button for quickly switching between the Stash and Inventory panels.

Players will also receive notifications when they gain Atlas Passive Skill Points, while the World Map now indicates the location of the most recently used waypoint.

The patch also includes a very large number of bug fixes covering Ritual, Expedition, Delirium, Trial of Chaos, Abyss, Breach, Atlas mechanics, skills, Ascendancies, trading, cosmetics, cheap Path of Exile 2 Currency, and client stability.

Why PoE 2 Update 0.5.5 Matters

Path of Exile 2: Forbidden Rites is much more than a new temporary league. Update 0.5.5 combines a fresh economy with substantial improvements to existing endgame systems.

The Ritual rework provides stronger progression and rewards, Trial of Chaos becomes more flexible, Expedition officially moves into the core game, and new Soul Cores create additional build possibilities. At the same time, Atlas improvements and quality-of-life changes should make endgame progression smoother.

With Forbidden Rites launching on September 4, PoE 2 players have plenty of reasons to start a new character and explore the updated endgame. For both returning players and those waiting for a major new content drop, Update 0.5.5 could become one of the most important updates of the current Path of Exile 2 era.

Path of Exile 2 Update 0.5.5, Forbidden Rites, launches September 4 with a fresh economy, revamped Ritual encounters, major Trial of Chaos improvements, Expedition entering the core game, new Soul Cores, and significant endgame changes.
