Summary

When the Exile steps aboard that sudden ship, the entire Wraeclast storyline becomes a bit questionable—but who cares? The ocean floor's treasures are waiting, and while some players POE buy currency to skip the grind, this league showers you with so much loot you might not need to. Hey everyone, ZiggyD here. I had the chance to play an early build of 3.29 "Curse of the Allflame" during my visit to Grinding Gear Games. This guide is based on that hands-on experience. Important note: This was recorded more than a week before launch, and some values and mechanics may have been adjusted in the final version.

Path of Exile 3.29 Curse of the Allflame Guide: Socket Changes, Mercenaries and League Mechanics Explained, cheap POE currency

1. Core Mechanic Change: No More Socket Color Restrictions

White Sockets Become Mainstream

Version 3.29 introduces a revolutionary change to the socket system. White sockets are now the most common socket color, and the biggest change is: gems are no longer restricted by socket color.

This means you can place any color skill gem or support gem into any color socket, eliminating the frustration of hunting for specific socket colors to complete your links.

Color-Matching Bonus

While color restrictions are gone, matching colors still provides a benefit: gems socketed into matching sockets receive a 10% quality bonus. For some skills (like Spark, which gains an extra projectile at 10% quality), this is quite impactful during leveling.

Practical Experience

Acts 1–2: Gear is almost entirely white sockets.

Act 3 onward: Items with one colored socket become fairly common, with occasional two-colored sockets appearing in later acts.

Currency changes: Chromatic Orbs are now much rarer. Their value may exceed Chaos Orbs at league start. Be careful when using Chromatics on items with attribute requirements that don't match your target gem color—the color bias based on base type still applies.

Bottom line: The socket change is all about smoother leveling, making gear swaps more frequent and exciting rather than a chore.

2. League Mechanic: Curse of the Allflame

1. Charts — Small-Scale Seabed Exploration

You'll encounter the league mechanic shortly after leaving town. NPC Valerie offers you your first Chart, which allows entry into a Bathysphere for underwater exploration.

Core Mechanics:

Place Allflame Lanterns at the edge of your current bubble to create new safe zones.

Leaving the bubble causes drowning (about 5 seconds).

No time pressure until you place your last lantern—only then do bubbles start collapsing.

Lanterns reveal ghost-flame arrows pointing toward nearby rewards (chests, etc.), creating a "hot and cold" treasure-hunting loop.

Strategy Tips:

Quick completion: Place lanterns in a circle around the starting bubble to finish rapidly.

More rewarding approach: Follow arrows to find treasure chests, then use the loot vacuum at extraction—all uncollected loot spirals onto the boat after you leave.

2. Voyages — The Bigger Version

Voyages are the "upgraded" version of Charts, similar to how Temple is to Incursions.

Construction:

Select 9 Charts to place on a board—each has adjacent modifiers and voyage-wide modifiers.

Borders provide additional random bonuses, rerollable using Dead Man's Sulfur.

In-Game Experience:

Each Voyage contains approximately 800 treasure locations and thousands of monsters.

Capsule storage system lets you send loot back to the ship without portal trips.

Extraction triggers a defense sequence as bubbles collapse—monsters swarm while you wait for the Bathysphere to arrive.

Note: The extraction phase has been adjusted post-preview—shorter duration, more monsters, more intense.

3. Ascendancy: The Luminary

Permanent Mercenaries

The Luminary's defining feature is the ability to permanently hire a mercenary through the "Noble Blood" ascendancy node (the only choice from Normal Lab).

Key Rules

Temporary mercenaries: Defeat and duel them for zone-wide assistance.

Permanent mercenaries: Only the Luminary can keep them and upgrade their gear.

Unique restrictions: Permanent mercenaries cannot use unique items unless you've allocated the relevant Luminary passive nodes.

Practical Experience

Mercenary quality varies dramatically:

Basic mercenaries: Provide an aura and some combat support—comparable to a typical 2-point ascendancy node.

Strong mercenaries (like the "Infamous Kineticist"): Provide Conductivity, Zealotry, and Haste while clearing faster than the player at times.

Mercenary death: In campaign testing, mercenaries never died—even in an Ultimatum test, I died long before they did. However, neglecting resists and recovery could still result in deaths.

4. New Crafting System: Allflame Crafting

Sulfur collected from league content fuels a crafting station on the ship. Key features:

One input, multiple outputs: Using a single Chaos Orb provides three result options.

Scales across all tiers: From entry-level crafting (vendor recipes for +1 gems) to high-end projects.

Limited campaign usage due to abundance of loot from other sources.

5. Leveling Experience Summary

Overall Impression

Spell leveling is very smooth thanks to quality bonuses and flexible socketing.

League mechanics provide abundant experience and gear—you will overlevel if you run everything. Consider skipping content strategically.

Recommend batching Charts (e.g., 10 at a time) rather than running them individually between zones.

Recommended Flow

Progress through campaign, collecting Charts as you go.

Batch complete Charts or a Voyage near the end of each act.

Use the gear and level advantage to push through the next act quickly.

Final Thoughts

3.29 "Curse of the Allflame" delivers fundamental socket system changes, a deeply strategic league mechanic, and the Luminary's new mercenary gameplay. As GGG designers put it, "Nothing is sacred"—this version dares to challenge established norms. The result is a mechanic that will be divisive, but for those who love it, it promises hundreds of hours of theorycrafting and optimization. For players seeking cheap POE currency, MMOEXP offers a convenient option, though the league's generous loot system may reduce that need.
