Summary
Toxic Rain Pathfinder is one of the best all-around budget builds in Path of Exile, allowing you to farm POE Currency efficiently without expensive gear investments. It works extremely well on a low budget, has smooth gear progression from league start through endgame, clears all content in the game, and is very easy to level. This guide covers everything you need to know to league start this build in Patch 3.29.
Why Toxic Rain Pathfinder?
What It Does Best
The build is extremely fast and clears maps smoothly. It excels at mechanics where enemies clump together: Abyss, Legion, Harvest, Strongboxes, and Essences. It is also the best build in the game for shallow delving and excellent for heist and lab running.
Key Strengths
Low Budget: You can kill Act 10 Kitava with a bow found in Act 1. The build requires very little gear to function. Speed: Pathfinder's flask uptime and movement speed bonuses make it one of the fastest mapping builds. Sustain: Upwards of 3,000 life per second from flasks provides incredible recovery without relying on leech.
How the Build Works
Main Skill: Toxic Rain
Toxic Rain is a chaos damage over time bow skill. You shoot an arrow that lands as five pods, attaching vines to enemies and dealing damage over time. The build scales primarily from gem levels, attack speed, skill effect duration, and damage over time multipliers.
This build scales much more like a caster than an attack build. Gem levels are your primary source of increased damage. Attack speed allows more pods out at a time. Skill effect duration lets you stack more pods under an enemy simultaneously.
Ascendancy: Pathfinder
Pathfinder provides permanent flask uptime on all flasks. You can completely automate utility flasks using "when charges reach full" bench crafts. You also maintain high uptime on a life flask, providing massive sustain. You do need to manually press the life flask—this is the one active button in the build.
Automated Damage Setup
Mana Forged Arrow Support automates additional damage. Hook it up with Caustic Arrow using Life Tap Support (zero mana cost) and Toxic Rain of Withering with Frenzy for wither stacks and frenzy charges. Culling Strike in the same setup provides more utility. This creates a one-button playstyle where you simply shoot Toxic Rain and everything else is automated.
Passive Tree and Ascendancy Order
Ascendancy Order
First two points go into Nature's Reprisal for a chance to inflict Wither on hit. This increases wither stacks from 90% increased damage taken to 135%—a huge damage boost.
Next, take Nature's Adrenaline for flask charge uptime and movement speed. Then Master Surgeon for life flask uptime. Finally, take Nature's Boon for magic utility flask effect.
Key Tree Nodes
Area of Effect: You want 37-43% increased area of effect for all five Toxic Rain pods to overlap on enemies. Get this from the passive tree (20%), glove prefix craft, helm prefix craft, and jewels. Do not take extra projectiles—they reduce overlap effectiveness.
Mana Solutions: Primal Spirit helps early. A small passive giving mana per enemy hit solves mana for a very long time since Toxic Rain's initial pod hits trigger it.
Cluster Jewels: Go for a three-notable chaos cluster with Unwaveringly Evil, Wicked Pall, and Unholy Grace. Unspeakable Gifts can be added for explosions on kill (25% of max life as chaos damage). Use two medium clusters—a chaos DoT cluster and a flask effect cluster with Spiked Concoction for Alchemist's Genius (permanent 4-second buff increasing flask effect and charge generation).
Leveling and Gear Progression
Leveling Skills
Use Caustic Arrow from level 2 through Act 1. Pick up Toxic Rain at level 12. Use Caustic Arrow for clearing packs and Toxic Rain for bosses and single-target. Puncture is useful for killing Brutus.
Early Gear
Bow: Quill Rain is best in slot for the campaign, but any bow with attack speed works. The damage on the bow does not matter—all damage comes from damage over time. Other Gear: Prioritize life, resistances, and movement speed on boots. You need very little gear to level.
Endgame Bow Crafting
Craft a Thicket Bow (item level 78+). Alt spam until you get T1 attack speed. Use the new league mechanic to create imprints and annul down to just the attack speed mod. Craft "Can have up to 3 Crafted Modifiers" and "Cannot Roll Attack Modifiers" (fills suffixes). Use a regular Exalted Orb—this adds "+1 Level of Socketed Gems" (the only modifier that can be added). Use a Hunter's Exalted Orb for increased chaos damage over time (aim for 60-94%). Remove crafted modifiers, re-add "Can have up to 3 Crafted Modifiers," then craft chaos damage over time multiplier (prefix) and +2 level of socketed support gems (prefix). The bow costs approximately 7-10 divines for best-in-slot endgame gear.
Key Uniques
Lightning Coil is your ideal body armor, converting 50% of physical damage taken to lightning. Cloak of Flame can be rolled into Lightning Coil via the new Legion mechanic, adding 20% of physical damage taken as fire on top of the 50% as lightning—77% of physical damage taken as non-physical. Tides of Time is non-negotiable best-in-slot belt, providing flask charges. Three charges every three seconds for utility flasks is ideal. Do not use Mageblood or Headhunter—Tides of Time is better for Pathfinder.
Quiver
A high-quality quiver with double damage over time multipliers is the long-term goal. Combine with Widowhail (250% increased quiver bonuses) for massive damage scaling.
Defense and Sustain
Petrified Blood
Petrified Blood turns damage taken below half life into a stagger debuff, making you incredibly tanky. Life flask recovery offsets the stagger. This is why Pathfinder and Petrified Blood are perfectly made for each other.
Flask Setup
Bismuth, Jade, and other utility flasks provide defensive value. Use catalysts on Tides of Time to increase life recovery from 100% to 120%. Flask effect medium cluster jewels maintain permanent Alchemist's Genius uptime.
Eldritch Altars
Overcap lightning and cold resistances by 60+ to run all player modifiers on blue Eldritch Altars without thinking. Always run blue altars for quantity and duplication bonuses—fish for Divine altars for maximum profit.
Summary
Toxic Rain Pathfinder is a proven, reliable league starter that clears all content on a budget, so you never feel pressured to buy POE currency just to keep up. It offers incredible speed, smooth mapping, and strong defenses through flask sustain and Petrified Blood. With automated damage setups and a one-button playstyle, it excels at fast content farming. The gear progression is straightforward, with a clear path from Quill Rain to a crafted Thicket Bow. If you want a fast, reliable, and fun league starter that can do everything, Toxic Rain Pathfinder is an outstanding choice
