Summary
Path of Exile 2 is preparing for its next major step toward the full 1.0 launch, and Update 0.5.5 brings two major attractions: the reveal of the Duelist class and the new Forbidden Rights event league. The Duelist introduces sword combat built around flowing between attacks and stances, while the event adds Ritual-inspired encounters, new endgame progression, and a major Trial of Chaos overhaul. To gear up your Duelist quickly, buy POE2 Currency and secure the weapons and gear you need to master this new playstyle.

Path of Exile 2 Duelist Deep Dive
The Duelist is scheduled to arrive with the full 1.0 release on December 11. Its defining weapon type is the sword, with one-handed, two-handed, and dual-wield setups offering different combat options. The central design idea is flow: skills change depending on your current stance and can chain naturally into one another.
Ready, Sand, and Blood Stances
The Duelist can enter a ready stance after using certain skills. Holding the button prepares the blades for a stronger follow-up attack. For example, a basic sword slash becomes an area-of-effect attack while ready.
From there, skills can transition into additional stances. Sand Scour can stun enemies and activate sand stance, allowing the default attack to launch a sand disc. Perforate also changes depending on the stance: ready stance immediately produces its drill effect, while sand stance creates miniature sand discs from enemies it hits.
Blood stance focuses on bleeding and works particularly well with dual-wield swords. Bloody Blade can activate the stance, while the default attack creates a blood wave. Perforate produces miniature blood novas, and Hemorrhage accelerates bleeding before Rending Dash consumes the accumulated blood loss for a much stronger bleed.
Cyclone, Parry, and Buried Blades
Cyclone remains one of the Duelist's signature skills, but stances dramatically expand its possibilities. Using Cyclone from sand stance produces sand discs for powerful area clear. Dual-wield swords also enable parrying, while a shield can let the Duelist bash directly from ready stance to parry without waiting for an enemy attack.
Another major mechanic is buried blades. Earth Wrench sends blades through the ground, which can then interact with other abilities. Charged Slash can turn buried blades into miniature Tesla coils, while Earth Rend can create an entire wall of blades from ready stance. Blade Plunge detonates the blades, and combinations with sand or blood stances add sandstorms or blood pools.
This system also enables elemental combinations. Cyclone can absorb elemental ground effects, allowing players to combine blood, sand, fire, lightning, and even ice effects into increasingly elaborate setups.
Duelist Endgame Build Ideas
The preview showed two developer-created endgame builds that demonstrate how far these mechanics can be pushed.
Bringer of Blades
The Bringer of Blades build centers on buried blades. Earth Rend is used to efficiently create blades, while Blade Conduit charges them with lightning. Astral Projector can allow the effect to be placed from range, while Electrocute helps maintain crowd control.
Combat Frenzy generates frenzy charges that enable Sand Scour and Sand Stance. Blade Plunge can then trigger sand discs across the buried blades, creating large-scale area damage. Eroding Sands helps reduce enemy armor, while the Sandstorm support adds lightning to the sand discs.
Rain of Steel takes the concept further by covering the battlefield with additional buried blades. The developers demonstrated how this setup can turn the entire screen into a combination of lightning, explosions, and sand effects.
Scourge Walker
The second showcase build, Scourge Walker, puts a new spin on Cyclone. It uses Oro's Sacrifice, which converts the build toward fire damage and provides Infernal Step. Repeated Infernal Step uses generate Sacrificial Flame, increasing the fire damage taken by the player, so defensive investment and fire mitigation become important.
Blistering Bond allows fire damage to scale with bleeding, while other unique items support the fiery Cyclone concept. The basic rotation is to build Sacrificial Flame with Infernal Step, activate Blood Stance with Bloody Blade, and then use Cyclone.
The build can be pushed further with supports that cause bleeding enemies to shed explosive chunks of flesh and add additional fire effects. Echoing Strikes can consume accumulated frenzy charges to create multiple Cyclones. A second weapon set with a Targe and specialized Parry setup can improve single-target damage while preserving Blood Stance.
Importantly, these showcased builds were not yet using Ascendancy classes, meaning the final Duelist build potential should be considerably broader once Ascendancies are revealed.

Path of Exile 2 0.5.5 Forbidden Rights Event
Update 0.5.5 introduces Forbidden Rights, an event based on the Ritual league. It is not a traditional full league, but it provides a fresh economy and a new progression path before the 1.0 launch.
How Ritual Encounters Work
During the campaign, each area contains Ritual encounters guarded by the Nameless and their servants. Defeat the monsters inside the ritual site, activate the effigy, and fight the revived enemies while dangerous plague effects appear.
The defeated monsters provide Tribute, which can then be spent on rewards. Unlike standard Ritual encounters, campaign rewards focus heavily on useful leveling equipment and crafting currency rather than exclusively offering unique items.
Larger Ritual clusters appear at specific points throughout the campaign. These encounters are tied to area bosses, and defeated bosses carry over into subsequent Rituals. A final encounter can therefore combine several previous bosses into one increasingly difficult battle, with unique items becoming available as rewards for completing these epic encounters.
Multiplayer Tribute and Endgame Rituals
Forbidden Rights also improves multiplayer Rituals. In 0.5.5, every party member earns their own Tribute and can spend it on personal rewards. To prevent group play from becoming excessively rewarding, party members cannot reroll the shop and receive fewer choices.
At endgame, Rituals continue to appear and can provide unique items and Omens. Players can also spend Tribute on Sacred Blooms, which can add a Wildwood entrance to an Atlas map.
Wildwood and Wisp Mechanics
Entering the Wildwood starts a timed exploration sequence. Players should follow Wisp trails and collect as many as possible before leaving. There are three primary types: Primal, Vivid, and Wild.
Each type changes the monsters in the map. Primal Wisps can turn normal monsters into magic monsters, Vivid Wisps add modifiers to rare monsters, and Wild Wisps increase item rarity. Collecting multiple types simultaneously can significantly increase map rewards, although empowered monsters become much harder to kill. Ritual Tablets can further increase the number of Wisps encountered.
Trial of Chaos Overhaul
Update 0.5.5 also delivers a substantial Trial of Chaos rework. Players can now leave between rooms and resume later, while room layouts, doors, elevators, objectives, and monster spawning have been streamlined.
Modifiers have been rebalanced to be less dangerous at lower tiers while reaching the previous maximum difficulty at higher tiers. They also provide item rarity bonuses and clearer descriptions.
Wager Modifiers and Room 30
New wager modifiers add another risk-versus-reward layer. Some can increase modifier tiers in exchange for significantly greater currency rewards. Their timing matters, creating more strategic decisions between rooms.
Trial of Chaos can now continue all the way to Room 30, with difficulty and rewards increasing as the run progresses. Reaching later rooms can also provide all three Trialmaster fragments in a single run, giving experienced players a more reliable route toward the Trialmaster encounter.
New Abyss and Expedition Endgame Content
Update 0.5.5 adds Abyssal Ravines to the Atlas. These connected maps contain Abysses, with rewards increasing as players progress through the ravine. The final map guarantees an Abyssal boss encounter.
Expedition also remains part of the core game, with access continuing from Act Four onward. At endgame, Expedition Tablets add more investment options, including multiple Expeditions in one area and additional Remnant encounters.

What to Prioritize in 0.5.5
For players starting Forbidden Rights September 4 at 1 PM PDT, a practical progression plan is to use campaign Rituals for leveling gear and crafting currency, then prioritize the larger boss Ritual clusters for unique rewards. At endgame, experiment with Sacred Blooms and Wildwood Wisps when your build is strong enough to handle empowered monsters.
Players focused on challenge progression can also target the event's eight challenges, which include campaign Ritual completion, defeating named rare monsters, and reaching level 90. Completing the challenges grants four exclusive cosmetic rewards plus a hideout statue.
Overall, Path of Exile 2's 0.5.5 update is less about a massive balance reset and more about introducing a fresh event economy, improving existing endgame systems, and laying the groundwork for the Duelist's arrival. The larger balance changes originally planned for 0.5.5 were postponed to the 1.0 release, while Forbidden Rights launches as the major new event. To take full advantage of the new economy, POE2 Currency can help you stock up early and adapt quickly to the evolving market.
