Summary
Expedition can be one of the most profitable mechanics in Path of Exile 2, but many players find it too difficult or time-consuming to run efficiently. This guide breaks down a practical farming strategy that netted over 1,000 POE 2 Divine Orbs from 80 maps—without max-juicing or requiring an S-tier build. The approach focuses on reducing difficulty while maintaining high profits, making it accessible for casual players.
The Results
Across 80 maps—30 travel maps, 30 grand expeditions, and 20 boss maps—the total profit exceeded 1,000 divine orbs, including a Headhunter and a Depleted Mana Rune. Excluding those two high-value drops, the total was still 579 divine orbs, averaging approximately 6.8 divine per map. Including the big drops, the average reached 15 divine per map.
Map Types and Setup
The strategy uses three different map types, each with its own tablet set and master selection.
Travel Maps
Travel maps are standard maps with a guaranteed expedition encounter. The goal here is speed—clear them as quickly as possible and move on.
Tablets: Use Abyss tablets (optional, but recommended) with irradiated tablets. Target rarity of items found in maps and increased effectiveness. Other modifiers are not important—keep tablet costs low.
Master: Use Hilda for Scarred Lands, which increases the number of runic monster markers and rare expedition monsters. This is how you sustain log books. The rest of Hilda's nodes (Breeding Season, Soul Eaters, Ancient Inscriptions) are less important.
Why Abyss: When Abyss overlaps with expedition, runic monsters become abyssal monsters with up to 100% increased effectiveness, resulting in significantly more log books. If you don't have the Abyss tree unlocked, bring whichever mechanic you prefer.
Waystones: Use T15 maps—do not go below T15 for expedition. Log book sustain is poor at lower tiers. Simply alch and go. Skip maps with chilled ground or Temporal Chains.
Execution: Rush through the map, ignoring remnants unless they offer something exceptional. Focus on runic monsters (flag markers)—these drop log books. Explode all runic monsters, prioritizing Visium sentries early to power up monsters for better loot.
Grand Expeditions
Grand expeditions are where the real profits come from. These maps have the swirl star icon.
Tablets: Use irradiated tablets only—other mechanics do not apply to grand expeditions. Target increased rarity and increased effectiveness. Tablets should cost around 1 divine each.
Master: Use Doryani for Refined Formula, which gives five massive explosions. This is a deliberate departure from the meta (JO with Eastern Knowledge). The downside of expedition is setup time—Doryani cuts that down dramatically by letting you clear more remnants faster. A 10% chance to reroll a remnant is less valuable than running more maps and seeing more remnants overall.
Key Doryani Nodes:
Refined Formula: Five massive explosions
Evolutionary Pressure: Increased effectiveness
Improved Calibration: More juice from alch-and-go waystones
Volatile Connection: Chance at fracturing orbs from cleansed or corrupted monsters
Waystones: T15, alch and go. Same as travel maps.
Execution: In grand expeditions, check remnants for purple runes and high-value modifiers. Use Liquid Visium (bought from Pharaoh) to reroll remnants if needed. Look for currency excavated chests (indicated by chaos orb icons). Target remnants with gold-outlined rune slots—these send modifiers forward to future remnants in your explosive chain.
Boss Maps
Boss maps target deadly expedition bosses for lineage support gems.
Tablets: Use overseer tablets with quantity of waystones (reportedly helps drop lineage gems) along with rarity and quantity from map bosses.
Master: Use JO for Untold Histories (35% increased chance to find lineage supports) and Keen Appraisal (exceptional items off bosses). Forest Mastery adds another 50% chance.
Target Bosses:
Utrid: Drops Depleted Mana Rune (quest item for Rune Seeker's Call)
Olroth: Drops valuable lineage gems (Augury, Omen, Exodus)
Managing Difficulty
The double or nothing selection is your main difficulty control lever.
Option 1 (Default): 25% chance to add an additional runic modifier to remnants further in your chain. More difficult, more rewarding.
Option 2: Remnants do not add runic modifiers to future remnants. Easier, less rewarding.
Option 0: Gold-outlined rune slots send modifiers forward, but no random additional runic modifiers.
If you are struggling, drop to Option 2. You will still see large purple remnants with great loot—for example, maps without forward modifiers can still drop 2 divine orbs and have a chance at Alder's Legacy.
Dangerous Runes to Watch
Life Rune and Soul Rune combined can make fights extremely difficult. If you see both, prepare for a tough encounter. Empowered, shared life, and volcanic modifiers stack difficulty quickly.
Log Books and Island Rumors
To chart expedition courses, use log books in your inventory. Target uncharted waters with at least three island rumors. You can reveal additional rumors by moving items in your inventory to rotate the displayed options.
The only map worth specifically targeting is Fallen Stars—it is S-tier but very rare. Otherwise, focus on speed over min-maxing.
To access boss encounters without finding specific rumors, use sagas. Right-click a saga in your inventory to consume it and get the corresponding boss map.
Passive Tree Summary
Key nodes for this strategy:
Scarred Lands (Hilda): Increases runic monsters
Refined Formula (Doryani): Five massive explosions
Double or Nothing: Difficulty/reward scaler
Volatile Connection: Chance at fracturing orbs
Untold Histories (JO): 35% increased lineage support drops
Forest Mastery: Additional 50% lineage support chance
Summary
Expedition farming can be highly profitable without requiring a top-tier build or max-juiced maps. Run T15 maps alch-and-go. Use Hilda for travel maps (log book sustain). Switch to Doryani for grand expeditions (five massive explosions for speed). Target Utrid and Olroth for boss maps. Control difficulty through the double-or-nothing selection—drop to option 2 if you are dying too much. With consistent execution, this strategy delivers 6-15 divine orbs per map while remaining manageable for casual players.
