Summary

The Cast while Luminary build can start with very cheap gear and still progress into red maps, complete its first Void Stones, and farm enough currency for a stronger endgame setup. Instead of trying to build the final version immediately, focus on making the early character reliable and then transition into a CI staff setup later. To smooth out that transition, buy POE currency and secure the key gear upgrades you need.

Day 1-2 Budget Setup

Gear Priorities

A five-link from the campaign is enough to start mapping. Combine it with inexpensive rare items rather than spending heavily on perfect equipment.

Your main priorities are:

Life

Elemental resistances

Chaos resistance

Damage over time

Chaos or spell damage

Damage over time multiplier

Cap your elemental resistances first. Chaos resistance can initially be lower, but it should become a priority as you progress through higher-tier maps.

Some elemental resistance overcap is perfectly fine during the early stage. Cheap rare gear often provides more resistance than you immediately need, giving you flexibility when replacing individual items.

The goal is simple: spend as little as possible while getting enough damage and defense to comfortably farm red maps.

Main Skill Setup

Blight as Your Primary Damage

Blight is the main damage skill for the early version of the build and should be placed in your five-link.

Use Spell Slinger to add Essence Drain, Soulrend, and Bane as supplemental damage sources. These skills provide additional chaos damage and help maintain pressure while you are moving between packs.

For defensive utility, use Tempest Shield and Flesh and Stone.

This setup is not designed to be extremely tanky. Instead, it gives you enough defense and damage to progress through the Atlas without making expensive early investments.

Intuitive Link Setup

Wait for Blight of Contagion

Intuitive Link becomes much more valuable after obtaining Blight of Contagion.

Link your Mercenary with Intuitive Link at the beginning of a map. When the Mercenary attacks, it can trigger Contagion. You then apply Blight to the affected enemies, allowing the Contagion effect to spread through nearby monsters.

This creates a simple clearing system where the Mercenary starts the chain and Blight provides the main damage.

Do not rush into Intuitive Link too early. Without Blight of Contagion, the setup does not provide the same level of clear and utility.

Automate Utility Skills

Intuitive Link also provides useful quality of life by helping apply Despair and maintain Summon Chaos Golem.

This means you spend less time manually casting utility skills and can focus on positioning, Blight, and movement.

The Chaos Golem also provides useful defensive and offensive benefits, making it a worthwhile part of the early setup.

Mercenary Setup

Improve Attack Speed

The Mercenary is important because it needs to trigger Contagion consistently.

Early in the league, it may feel slow. You can sometimes kill an entire pack before the Mercenary even triggers Contagion. This is mainly a gear and attack-speed problem rather than a weakness in the overall setup.

Use ranged attacks such as Venom Gyre and Cobra Lash and prioritize:

Attack speed

Projectile speed

Better ranged skills

Malevolence effect

Grace effect

Aura-related modifiers

As the Mercenary becomes faster, the Intuitive Link setup becomes much smoother.

Improve Aura Support

The Mercenary can also provide Malevolence and Grace aura effects.

Malevolence improves your damage-over-time scaling, while Grace provides additional evasion. As you add more evasion to your own gear and passive tree, the value of Grace increases.

This becomes especially useful when you later transition into the stronger defensive setup.

Early Passive and Unique Choices

Do Not Rush Defensive Mercenary Nodes

Loyal Bodyguard can look attractive because it can redirect part of the damage you take to the Mercenary. However, its effectiveness depends on the Mercenary having more life than your character.

During the early league, the Mercenary's life is usually too low to satisfy this condition consistently. As a result, the defensive benefit may not be reliable enough to justify prioritizing it immediately.

Focus instead on mechanics that provide consistent value from the beginning.

Use Transitional Uniques

Cheap unique items such as Kaom's Binding and Shaper's Seed can provide useful early benefits.

Treat them as temporary equipment. Once you have enough currency, replace them with stronger rares or items designed for the final build.

The same principle applies to your wand and shield: they are tools for early progression, not equipment you need to perfect.

Red Maps and Void Stones

Focus on Atlas Progression

Once your resistances and Blight damage are stable, start pushing into red maps.

Your main goals should be:

1. Complete Atlas progression.

2. Obtain your initial Void Stones.

3. Finish corrupted T16 maps when your damage allows it.

4. Farm currency consistently.

5. Upgrade the character gradually.

Avoid spending most of your currency on small upgrades that will soon be replaced. The budget setup exists primarily to generate the currency required for the endgame transition.

Pinnacle Boss Damage

Use Pact of the Gore

Pact of the Gore can provide the extra damage needed to move from T16 mapping into pinnacle bossing.

Its damage multiplier is particularly useful for self-cast damage-over-time skills. Against bosses, activate the effect and maintain Blight to take advantage of the additional damage.

It also applies Flesh Rend, causing enemies to take increased damage over time. This benefits several of your skills simultaneously, including:

Blight

Essence Drain

Soulrend

Bane

For a character using inexpensive gear, this can make a major difference when fighting bosses with much higher health than ordinary map enemies.

Legion Farming

Use Contagion for Pack Clear

The Contagion setup has strong potential for Legion farming.

Ideally, the Mercenary is already attacking when the Legion encounter begins. Once Contagion is triggered, applying Blight can spread the effect across large groups of enemies.

The early version may not clear Legion encounters perfectly because the Mercenary lacks attack speed and projectile speed. Continue upgrading these stats as your budget increases.

The combination becomes much more effective once the Mercenary can consistently attack from range and trigger Contagion quickly.

Transition to the Endgame Setup

Switch to a Staff

After farming enough currency, begin moving away from the temporary wand-and-shield setup.

The planned endgame version uses a staff because it offers substantially more offensive potential for the build. Do not overspend trying to perfect your starter weapon if you already know that a staff will eventually replace it.

Instead, save currency for the major transition.

Move Into Chaos Inoculation

The next major defensive upgrade is Chaos Inoculation (CI).

The CI version is built around a large Energy Shield pool while also using evasion and defensive mechanics such as Ghost Dance.

Prepare your Energy Shield equipment before making the switch. Going CI too early with insufficient Energy Shield can make the character significantly weaker.

Once you have suitable ES bases and enough gear, respec the passive tree and rebuild around the final setup.

Final Upgrade Path

The recommended progression is straightforward:

1. Start with a cheap five-link Blight setup.

2. Cap your important resistances.

3. Enter red maps and farm currency.

4. Unlock Blight of Contagion and add Intuitive Link.

5. Improve the Mercenary's attack speed, projectile speed, and aura effects.

6. Complete your Void Stones.

7. Use Pact of the Gore to improve pinnacle boss damage.

8. Farm enough currency for the final gear.

9. Transition from wand and shield to a CI staff setup.

The main strength of this approach is efficiency. You do not need an expensive build to start the league. Use the budget Cast while Luminary setup to reach T16 maps and generate currency, then invest those profits into the stronger CI staff version for endgame mapping, Legion farming, and pinnacle bosses. With the POE currency you earn along the way, you can fund the transition.
