Summary
Star Citizen ship combat is heading toward another major balance shift, with recent testing focusing heavily on time-to-kill (TTK), armour durability, shield behavior, and the relationship between ballistic and energy weapons. The goal is to make combat less dependent on a single dominant weapon type while giving pilots more meaningful choices during engagements. Players can also buy Star Citizen AUEC for ships and upgrades.
TTK Is Being Rebalanced
One of the biggest changes is the adjustment to TTK, or how long it takes to destroy an enemy ship. Recent community testing suggests the new balance significantly narrows the gap between energy and ballistic weapons across many ship types.
Instead of simply maximizing DPS, pilots may need to consider the target's shield capacity, hull durability, armour, and weapon characteristics. This should make fights feel less like a straightforward damage race and more like a battle of positioning and resource management.
Armour Becomes More Important
Armour is also playing a much larger role in determining how ships survive incoming fire. Previous updates have already introduced damage thresholds where heavily armoured ships can completely resist weaker projectiles until their armour is sufficiently damaged. Different ship archetypes can therefore have very different defensive profiles.
This creates an important distinction between weapons. High-caliber or specialized weapons could become increasingly valuable against heavily armoured targets, while smaller weapons may perform better against lighter ships and exposed components.
Shields and Weapon Choice
Shielding remains another major part of the new combat equation. Historically, Star Citizen has treated energy and ballistic damage differently, with shields absorbing energy damage while ballistic rounds can potentially penetrate and cause hull damage.
That relationship has created periods where ballistic weapons became extremely strong. Recent testing suggests the new balance is intended to reduce that gap, making energy weapons more competitive without completely removing the unique advantages of ballistics.
Ballistics vs Energy
The result could be a much more interesting weapon meta. Ballistics may still offer strong sustained pressure and advantages against certain defensive setups, but energy weapons could become a more reliable choice depending on the target.
For pilots, loadout selection may increasingly depend on what they expect to fight, rather than simply choosing whichever weapon currently has the highest effective DPS.
What This Means for Players
These changes could make ship combat more tactical and less predictable. Pilots will need to pay closer attention to armour condition, shield status, weapon limitations, and target selection.
CIG has previously stated that its long-term goal is to move combat away from a simple DPS race and toward tactical decisions involving power management, positioning, ship strengths, and weaknesses.
If these latest changes remain close to their testing values, Star Citizen dogfights could become slower, more strategic, and much more dependent on choosing the right weapon for the right target. Players can also use cheap Star Citizen AUEC for new ships and upgrades.
