More importantly, Dempsey leaves behind a handwritten note.
Its central message is that he is "not a monster", that another figure is the monster, and that the secret is in the mound. Dempsey repeatedly reminds himself that he must reach the mound, while also questioning why he cannot remember that fact.

Why the Mound Matters to Origins
For Zombies lore fans, the reference to the mound is the biggest part of the discovery.
The mound is closely associated with the excavation site at the center of Origins, meaning the Rev-7 message appears to connect directly to events surrounding Dempsey before the events players experience on the map.
That creates a new piece of connective tissue for Primis Dempsey. Rather than discovering everything about the Origins excavation for the first time during the map, the newly decoded report suggests that Dempsey was already pursuing information connected to the site.
The mysterious line about forgetting also adds another layer. The note reads like a warning Dempsey has deliberately left for himself, suggesting that his memories or understanding of what is happening are already becoming unreliable.
Is Dempsey Calling Richtofen a Monster?
This is where the new lore becomes much harder to interpret.
The message says, in essence, "I am not a monster. He is the monster." Richtofen is an obvious candidate because of his relationship with Dempsey and the events surrounding Origins.
However, the cipher does not conclusively identify the person Dempsey means.
That distinction matters. The message introduces a mystery rather than explicitly solving one. The "monster" could potentially refer to another character, another aspect of the Zombies storyline, or something connected to the experiments and Element 115.

The breakthrough came from changing the question.
Instead of asking only how to decrypt the 1,092 characters found in-game, researchers began asking why an AMSCO-style transposition process appeared to produce an output that was dramatically shorter than expected.
The difference was exactly 168 characters, which matched the structural footprint of a missing column.
From there, researchers examined historical source code associated with the encryption software used during the relevant period. The investigation found the implementation problem responsible for dropping the data.
