Summary
Enigma is the signature rune word that came back with Diablo 4's Season 15 rune system, and players are scrambling to assemble Jah, Ith and Ber. The good news: you do not need three perfect lucky drops. Runes come from overlapping sources, and the upgrade ladder in the Horadric Cube turns leftovers into the high tiers you are missing. Players who need extra resources can also use Diablo 4 Items to support their progression.
The realistic strategy is to farm capstone dungeons for the torch splinters, let the Ber and Lo drops pile up along the way, target the Jah from Beast in the Ice on the Layer of Runes board, and cube the rest. At a measured pace, raw Ber drops show up roughly every 60 to 90 minutes of capstone runs, with another two to three Lo runes on the side that can be upgraded into a second Ber. Here is the full route.
What Enigma Actually Needs
Enigma is built from three runes: Jah, Ith and Ber. Each comes from a different part of the Season 15 economy.
Jah is the old-school rune, the fourth tier on the Diablo 2 ladder that players remember from the original Enigma. Ber is one of the brand-new unique runes introduced in Season 15, and it is the highest and rarest of that new tier.
Ith is a low-tier rune you will pick up incidentally while doing any of the activities below. The two pieces that actually drive the farm are Jah and Ber.
The Capstone Dungeon Loop Is Your Main Engine
The single best source for high-tier runes is the capstone dungeon rotation you already run for the torch. Each boss — Diablo, Baal, Mephisto — drops a different splinter, but the underlying loot tables and drop rates are shared across all three.
Because the splinter rates are intentionally low, you will run these dungeons many times anyway. On the way, the bosses and chests drop a mix of returning Diablo 2 runes and new Diablo 4 runes. Most of the useful high runes come from this pool.
The practical result: before you ever set foot in Uber Tristram, you will often walk away with a Ber or two purely from the torch farm. The same dungeons also drop mythics, mythic charms and seals, so the runes are a side benefit, not the main reason to be there. That is what makes this the most efficient single activity for Enigma.
Measured over a long session, expect a raw Ber roughly every 60 to 90 minutes of capstone farming, plus two to three Lo runes along the way. Since three Lo upgrade into one Ber via the cube, every torch farm effectively produces an Enigma or two of rune value over the course of a season.
Use the Horadric Cube Upgrade Ladder
Season 15 carries over the Diablo 2 rune upgrade recipe. Three runes of one tier plus the correct crafted gem cube up into one rune of the next tier. Some steps use a two-to-one recipe instead of three-to-one, which makes mid-tier stacking much cheaper.
The ladder runs Ist to Vex, Vex to Ohm, Ohm to Lo, Lo to Ber, and Ber all the way up to Jah in theory. In practice, do not cube a Ber into Jah. Ber is far more common than Jah in the current loot tables, so burning a Ber to manufacture a Jah is a bad trade. Save the upgrade ladder for turning leftover Ist, Vex and Ohm runes into missing Lo and Ber pieces.
If you have one Vex, one Ohm, one Lo and a couple of extra Ists, you can walk the whole ladder up to a Ber without a lucky drop. Just make sure you craft the correct gem for each step, or the cube recipe will not fire.
Where Jah Actually Drops: Beast in the Ice
Jah has a dedicated farm. On the Layer of Runes board, allocate the War Plan node called Beast in the Ice. Once that node is active, the chests from that boss have a dedicated Jah drop table.
Every boss on the board has a set of runes tied to it — typically one magic, one rare and one legendary rune — with a couple of exceptions where the drop list is still unconfirmed. Bring twelve to two dozen keys into the node. On average, that is enough to see each of the listed runes at least once, including Jah from Beast in the Ice.
Take the plus-one chest node on the board as well. It smooths out the run, cuts the time per key, and doubles the number of chest rolls you get on the same boss.
Secondary Farms: City Tributes and Paragon Grinding
A few other sources fill in gaps without being the main strategy.
In the City, tributes reward runes directly. Run every tribute you have available — blue, yellow and all the rest — rather than trying to upgrade them. Skip the tribute bargains in the soul shop; they cost around 750 souls and are not worth the spend.
On the plan board, allocate the node that grants extra Pranksters. That is the big extra-loot node for this activity and noticeably improves tribute value.
Even without tributes, ordinary Paragon grinding inside the City drops runes naturally. A ten-hour City session focused purely on Paragon levels has produced multiple high runes incidentally. Treat the City as a passive rune source whenever you are there for other reasons.
How the Pieces Come Together
The fastest realistic Enigma path looks like this:
Run the Diablo, Baal and Mephisto capstone dungeons for splinters. Bank every Ber, Lo and Vex that drops.
Cube mid-tier runes up into missing Lo and Ber pieces using the correct crafted gems.
Take the Layer of Runes board, allocate Beast in the Ice and the plus-one chest node, then burn a dozen-plus keys for the dedicated Jah drop.
Clear any City tributes you hold while Paragon farming, but skip the soul-shop bargains.
Pick up Ith incidentally along the way.
Player Recommendations
Do not chase Jah in the capstones. The capstone table is great for Ber and Lo. Jah has a dedicated boss farm, so use it.
Do not cube Ber into Jah. Ber is the more common rune on the current tables. Cubing one up to Jah burns the easier farm.
Do not buy tribute bargains with souls. The 750-soul cost is a trap. Run the tributes you already have.
Always allocate the plus-one chest node on the Layer of Runes board before farming boss-specific runes.
Stack multiple goals per run. The capstone loop already farms mythics, charms and splinters. The runes are a bonus, which is exactly why it outperforms dedicated rune-only farms.
Final Verdict
Enigma is not a lucky-drop chase in Season 15. It is a byproduct of the torch and endgame loop. Run capstones, let Ber and Lo accumulate, cube the mid-tiers up, and make one dedicated Beast in the Ice key run for Jah. At roughly a raw Ber every 60 to 90 minutes plus the Lo upgrades, a single torch-farming session can hand you enough runes for one or two Enigmas before you even finish the splinter grind.
Save your best armor base, stop overthinking the farm, and just run the content you already enjoy. The runes will catch up, and if you need additional resources to speed up your progression, you can also buy Diablo 4 Items as a convenient option.
