Summary
Path of Exile 2 has officially confirmed its biggest release milestone yet. The game's full 1.0 release arrives on December 11, and the launch will bring the highly anticipated sword weapon class and its new melee gameplay.
The Gamescom reveal also showed a possible Duelist/Gladiator-style character, parrying, bleed effects, stance-based combat, charged attacks, Cyclone-like abilities and a unique sword. Meanwhile, the upcoming 0.5.5 update will be revealed separately on August 27. To prepare for both, buy POE2 Currency and build a flexible stash that lets you adapt to the new meta.
Here's everything you need to know and how to prepare for the next major stage of PoE 2.
PoE 2 1.0 Full Release Is December 11
The biggest announcement is official: PoE 2 1.0 launches on December 11.
The game will effectively become free-to-play at full release, meaning anyone will be able to download and play it. This is expected to bring a huge wave of new and returning players into the game.
Most importantly, the sword gameplay shown during the Gamescom presentation is tied directly to the December 11 1.0 release.
Swords Are Not Coming in 0.5.5
Some players speculated that swords might arrive with the upcoming 0.5.5 update. The reveal makes the situation much clearer.
The sword trailer explicitly identifies the content with the 1.0 release on December 11, so players should not expect swords to arrive as part of 0.5.5.
This distinction matters if you're deciding whether to wait for the current event or save your excitement for 1.0.
What the New Sword Gameplay Reveals
The Gamescom footage gives us the first substantial look at sword combat. While exact skill gem names, numbers and mechanics still need to be officially detailed, the trailer reveals several important characteristics.
Bleed and Parry Mechanics
The showcased character appears to use bleed-based attacks, suggesting that damage-over-time effects could be an important part of sword builds.
The trailer also clearly shows a parry mechanic. This could give melee characters a more active defensive option instead of relying entirely on conventional movement and damage mitigation.
For players who enjoy reactive melee combat, parrying could become one of the defining mechanics of the new archetype.
Blood and Sand Stances
Another major visual clue is the apparent use of blood and sand-based stances or effects.
The character appears to switch between different combat states, with blood and sand influencing the visual effects of attacks. This could potentially create different offensive options depending on the stance being used.
The exact mechanics have not been confirmed yet, so these should be treated as observations from the trailer rather than finalized skill descriptions.
Charged Attacks and Area Damage
Several attacks appear to involve charging before release. This suggests sword builds may have attacks that reward timing and preparation rather than simply attacking as quickly as possible.
The trailer also features substantial AoE, including circular projectiles and explosions. These abilities could give sword characters strong tools for clearing groups of enemies while maintaining their aggressive melee identity.
High-Mobility Sword Combat Could Be Extremely Fast
One of the most interesting parts of the showcase is how frequently the character moves while attacking.
Rather than standing still and repeatedly attacking, several abilities carry the character through enemies. The footage includes attacks resembling Flicker Strike, fast dashes and an ability that appears to tear through the ground.
This type of skill design has important implications for scaling.
If attack speed makes these movement-based attacks faster, players could potentially increase both their damage output and clear speed at the same time. The result could be a very fast melee playstyle once the build is properly optimized.
Of course, the actual movement speed, attack speed scaling and collision behavior will determine how smooth the archetype feels in real maps.
Cyclone and Circular Effects
The reveal also shows a large spinning ability that strongly resembles Cyclone.
One version appears to send blood-like waves outward while spinning, while another sequence has different circular effects that may be connected to the suspected sand stance.
It is still unclear whether these projectiles are intrinsic to Cyclone or are triggered by another skill, stance or supporting effect. However, the repeated appearance of circular attacks suggests that wide-area damage will be an important part of the sword toolkit.
Duelist or Gladiator?
The character shown in the showcase appears to represent the Duelist, although the art book reportedly refers to the archetype as Gladiator.
The final naming remains important to watch. Gladiator could potentially be an Ascendancy rather than the base character class, meaning players should not assume the terminology is finalized from the trailer alone.
Regardless of the final name, the showcased identity is clearly centered around fast melee combat, swords, bleeding, parrying and potentially stance management.
