PoE 2 1.0: Will Your Early Access Progress Be Wiped?

Path of Exile 2 is scheduled to launch version 1.0 on December 11, 2026, Pacific Time, when it will become free to play. If you have spent hundreds of hours levelling characters and collecting gear, you may be wondering whether the transition will wipe your progress or leave your stash without a purpose.

GGG’s Early Access FAQ confirms that existing characters will survive the full release. They will remain in a separate Early Access environment and will not move into the full release’s Standard league.

If you plan to stay in Early Access, your current gear can still help you develop your character further. Joining the new launch league requires a fresh start. Characters, in-game items, and paid stash tabs follow different rules, so understanding their status can help you decide what to keep farming before launch.

Where Old Characters Will Stay

Opening another league during PoE 2's Early Access period won't delete characters created in previous leagues. GGG has designated an Early Access League for those characters, which will continue to exist after the full release.

That leaves room to finish a favourite build, collect unique items, or tackle unfinished challenges using the resources you already have. Completing these activities can benefit your existing character, but you'll still need to level up and gear a fresh one when 1.0 arrives.

Forbidden Rites and Runes of Aldur will both run until the 1.0 release and end together. Players with unfinished league challenges can plan around that deadline. The detailed migration process at league end still needs further clarification from GGG.

Early Access League vs Standard

Standard environment available during Early Access can be confused with Standard after the full release.

The official FAQ identifies the destination for old characters as Early Access League and explicitly excludes them from the new Standard. These environments have separate characters and economies.

Check which environment holds your Path of Exile 2 Currency before deciding whether to keep saving or use it for trades.

Resources in the old environment cannot fund your launch budget, and the amount that currently covers a good item will not necessarily have comparable trading value in the new economy.

Standard also differs from a Challenge League. Standard has no fixed season end, whereas each Challenge League follows its own seasonal schedule. Joining a new season means starting a character there, without the levels or equipment of an existing Standard character.

Using Your Items and Currency

GGG has not fully detailed the stash-item migration process or exactly how those items will be accessed after launch. Until those rules are clear, manage your inventory around your current character’s needs. There is no need to rearrange equipment and currency specifically for the full release.

Exalted Orbs, Divine Orbs, and other currency can still support your current gearing goals. Before trading for an upgrade, compare the required modifiers and price. For crafting attempts, consider the cost of failure and keep usable replacement gear, so an unsuccessful craft does not leave you unable to continue mapping.

Once your equipment can handle your intended goals, you can stop committing more PoE Currency and retain a reserve for later adjustments. A new economy does not immediately make old currency useless.

Its trading value in the old environment still depends on supply and demand, so there is little reason to force unnecessary upgrades simply to empty your stash before launch.

Stash Tabs and Cosmetics

Paid stash tabs in Path of Exile 2 are account entitlements. Items stored in these tabs remain tied to the league or game environment where they are kept. Access to an applicable tab does not give a new character access to the contents stored in another environment.

The official FAQ confirms compatibility for applicable stash tabs, although a particular tab type depends on whether its associated content exists. Cosmetics also depend on compatibility; an unavailable cosmetic should not automatically be treated as lost.

PlayStation and other platforms have restrictions on paid content. If you lack the corresponding stash-tab entitlement on your current platform, the tab may appear as Remove-Only. You can retrieve items from it but cannot deposit more.

Starting in the Full Release

Old PoE 2 characters retain their existing levels. Entering the new Standard or a 1.0 Challenge League means building another character from scratch, including campaign progression, leveling, and gearing. Before playing together, make sure everyone in your group has selected the same league and game mode.

An initial plan can cover your weapon choice, temporary equipment, and when to pause campaign progression for upgrades. Check specific skills and equipment against the release patch notes before committing. Current guides should not be treated as final 1.0 build plans.

Preparing for Launch

List your unfinished league challenges before deciding how much more PoE  Currency to spend. Forbidden Rites awards cosmetics at 2, 4, 6, and 8 completed challenges, with those rewards obtainable only through that league’s challenges. If you are close to the next reward tier, focus on the remaining objectives and upgrade equipment as needed.

Runes of Aldur players can also review their challenge lists. Review the remaining challenges, tackle the manageable ones first, and weigh the time needed for harder objectives against the rewards they offer. Once finished, you can take a break without continuing to expand your inventory.

For launch preparation, practise equipment progression on a limited budget, basic crafting, and currency exchange. Record where progress stalled and how you resolved it. That experience can help a new character, while the final skill choices should wait for the 1.0 patch notes.

Rechecking Your Old Build

GGG notes in the PoE 2 Early Access FAQ that later balance updates may alter the performance of characters from previous leagues. Keeping a character does not guarantee that its equipment setup will remain equally effective.

Builds relying on particular skill interactions need to check the relevant changes after an update.

Record your main skills, support gems, and important equipment modifiers beforehand. After the patch, confirm whether those interactions still function, then test damage and survivability.

If a single interaction is affected, adjust that part first. Old characters can continue to develop; players entering the new 1.0 environments should use the release patch notes to settle their new characters’ skill paths and equipment priorities.
