Summary
Patch 0.5.5 does not bring major balance changes, but the Path of Exile 2 league-start meta has changed as players better understand the current classes and Ascendancies. Martial Artist and Gemling, in particular, have opened up several strong new options.
This is a league-start tier list, not an endgame ranking. The goal is to identify builds that can progress through the campaign, complete Atlas progression, defeat major bosses, and generate starter currency without requiring expensive gear.
A good starter should work in SSF or with minimal trade, ideally stay below 10 POE 2 Divine Orbs, and remain effective through the first 20-30 hours or the first week of a league.
What Makes a Good League Starter?
Campaign and Early Maps Matter
An endgame build is not automatically a good league starter. Builds that require level 90-95, expensive uniques, or 10-20 Divines before becoming functional should not be considered true starters.
The best options can use basic gear, defeat campaign bosses, enter maps quickly, and continue progressing without a major character rebuild.
For example, Arc Gemling Totems can be powerful later, but they are not recommended as league starters because they struggle to function properly through the campaign and early maps without significant investment.
Speed Is Not Everything
The current farming meta also makes damage and survivability more important. Expedition is one of the strongest farming strategies and rewards characters that can reliably kill dangerous enemies rather than simply move as fast as possible.
Ritual and high-juice Abyss also do not require extreme speed. Breach and pure Delirium still favor fast builds, but a slower character with significantly better damage and defenses can be more efficient in other content.
S Tier League Starters
Grim Pillars Oracle
Grim Pillars Oracle offers extremely high damage on a low budget and is particularly effective for Expedition. It is fast enough for general mapping without relying on extreme movement speed.
The main concern in 0.5.5 is the Gem Expedition setup. Because the campaign does not provide Runes of Aldor in the same way, players may need to use Spark or Plants before making the transition.
The build can also be demanding on PC performance.
Ice Shot Deadeye
Ice Shot Deadeye remains one of the safest established starters. It has a strong progression path and combines excellent clear speed with mobility.
The early setup uses Ice Shot and Snipe before moving toward a simpler Ice Shot configuration. Deadeye provides strong movement advantages and Tailwind, making the build especially effective for fast mapping.
It also scales well into the endgame, so players do not need to immediately reroll after completing their initial progression.
Gemling Twisters
Gemling Twisters is one of the strongest overall choices because it combines damage, speed, scaling, and quality of life.
The Gemling version provides a particularly complete package of offense, survivability, and convenience. Deadeye can also work, while Lich Twisters generally takes longer to scale and may be better suited as a second character.
Martial Artist Builds
Martial Artist has become one of the most flexible league-start classes. Players can build around Whirling Assault, Fallen Thunder, Oil Barrage, Flicker Strike, and other attacks.
The early game can feel weak, but the class becomes much stronger after Ascendancy progression, especially after the second Lab.
Its biggest advantage is flexibility. Players can experiment with different attack setups and even move into bow-based gameplay.
Flame Blast Oil Grenade
Flame Blast Oil Grenade delivers enormous damage on a low budget. Its main weakness is speed. Even with investment, it is not a particularly fast mapper.
However, it performs very well in Expedition, Ritual, 20% Delirium, and boss carries. If reliable damage is more important than racing through maps, it is an excellent starter.
Like Grim Pillars, it can also be demanding on PC performance.
Tactician Galvanic
Tactician Galvanic is among the strongest crossbow options. It progresses effectively from the campaign into expensive endgame setups and can eventually become a streamlined, nearly one-button crossbow build.
It is a strong choice for players who want both reliable league-start progression and long-term scaling.
Tula Poison Burst
Tula Poison Burst is a strong low-budget poison build. Its performance improves substantially with Chill Monk, which can greatly increase its damage.
It works well in early Delirium and Expedition without requiring expensive gear. Its main disadvantage is delayed damage, which becomes less attractive compared with direct-damage builds later in progression.
