Summary
WARDOGS Season 2 launches this Thursday with a full XP reset. Everyone starts on a level playing field—and with the right opening moves, you can be ahead of the curve within two matches. If you'd rather skip the early grind and buy WARDOGS Cash to gear up faster, that option is available too.
1. Understand the XP System
Whichever weapon you kill with determines which skill tree gets the XP.
Weapon Type | Skill Tree |
Assault Rifles | Assault |
SMG | Medic |
Shotguns / LMGs | Support |
Marksman / Sniper / Bows | Recon |
Rule #1: Until level 10, focus on one class only. Low levels give you a discount on FOBs ($7,500 becomes half price). That discount disappears around level 9. If you spread XP across three trees, you hit level 9 with nothing unlocked. If you focus one tree, you unlock something meaningful—like the Tier 3 Hammer.
2. Why Support First
The Tier 3 Hammer unlocks at Support level 7–8. It's the only hammer that builds mortars and drills—the structures that win matches. It also builds faster and earns more money and XP per swing. Sprint for it.
3. First-Match Plan
Loadout:
Shotgun (grants Support XP)
Scout Backpack (required—the FOB takes 6 slots and won't fit in the free backpack)
Buy the FOB, do not buy a hammer (the FOB contains a medium hammer and meds)
Double-barrel shotgun has no magazines, so carry loose bullets in your last two slots
Find a driver teammate. Ride with them so you don't gain Driver XP. If you can't find one, get your own truck and load up on building supplies.
On the battlefield:
Find a flat, quiet spot and place your FOB.
Take the medium hammer and meds out.
Build a perimeter wall as fast as possible—don't aim for perfect.
Leave a gate (unsnap a HESCO wall and build it tight).
Throw a green flare and type in chat that you need building supplies at your location.
When supplies arrive: Stop building and deposit everything into the FOB. You get XP and money for it, and it helps your drivers level.
Fast XP trick: Line up HESCO walls, stand at one end, and strafe back and forth while building. It's purely for farming Support XP. Once you have the Tier 3 Hammer, your team benefits enormously in every match after.
4. Base Defense Essentials
Wall height matters. If your walls aren't four blocks high (or two HESCO blocks tall), enemies can climb on a car and jump over them. If you hear a car and see no friendly vehicles on the minimap, it's probably an enemy.
If you hear enemies outside and your walls are solid: Stay inside and keep building. They'll get bored and leave.
Supply tip: Throw your ammo and meds inside the FOB while hauling to maximize bag space. Remember to take them back out before you leave.
5. Building Changes After the Tier 3 Hammer
Cost increases:
Drills: +500 supplies (~20% longer build time, but you'll earn more money)
Mortars: 150 → 800 (you only need about three pits anyway)
Doors: 22 → 250
Gates: 85 → 500
Bremer walls: 15 → 32 (much needed—they were cheaper, faster, and stronger than HESCO before)
New additions:
Large Shelter
Wooden Step (great for "Mario ladders")
Buildable Machine Gun (infantry defense)
Wire and Sandbags now fit on top of Bremer walls
Unfinished builds now collapse if their supports die—no more floating blocks.
6. Driving Change
Every time you return to base and deliver another set of supplies, your XP and money slowly ramp up until they hit a cap. Repeated deliveries are now encouraged, which may offset the increased building costs.
7. Money Management
Reliable income: Reviving teammates, transporting teammates, marking enemies, eliminating enemies, contributing to control zones, building and depositing resources. All income doubles in the Hot Zone.
Storage crate trick: Fill a crate with supplies at 125% cost. It works as personal storage—if others buy from it, great; if not, the supplies are yours. Drop it somewhere safe so it doesn't get destroyed.
8. Late-Game Loadout
XP bonuses: Each skill tree has a cap on end-of-match bonus XP. If you only pilot, you only hit the Piloting cap. If you pilot and drive, you hit both caps. If you care about overall War Dogs level, spread across trees. If you just want one specific unlock, tunnel-vision that tree.
Early build (no Operator Backpack): Tier 3 Hammer, SMG, free resuscitator, two magazines, loose bullets, extra bandages, best armor, cheapest tac vest.
Late build (with Operator Backpack): Operator Backpack, field resuscitator, free resuscitator, SMG with best attachments, two magazines, full stack of bullets, IFAC or extra bandages, FOB.
9. Key Reminders
Never bring Hollow Point. It's halved against any target with level 1 armor. Use Armor Piercing or FMJ.
Buy loose ammo, not magazines. Empty magazines permanently occupy backpack slots.
Grab the free field resuscitator every deployment from the merchant.
After placing your FOB, take all the meds out. You paid for them.
Season resets are a chance to reshuffle the deck. Focus one path, unlock the Tier 3 Hammer fast, and snowball with smart building and money management. While everyone else debates weapon choices, you'll already be changing the battlefield with mortars and anti-air.
