To reach Divergence in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, level your weapons while completing their available Special challenges, finish Gold across each weapon class, and clear Platinum on all 33 launch weapons. Then complete 33 Harmonic Break challenges. Keep useful attachments available by postponing optional Weapon Prestige until you have finished the challenges that depend on them.
DMZ early access begins October 20, 2026 (Pacific Time), for digital preorders, ahead of Multiplayer on October 23. Your local calendar date may differ. Use that window to build weapon levels and attachment access. Military, Special, and Completionist progression is shared across modes, so you can change modes when a challenge becomes awkward without starting a separate camo collection.
DMZ accepts AI enemies for applicable challenges but often demands more kills. Compare the full requirement before choosing a mode; neither has a measured speed advantage across the entire grind.
MW4 Camo Progression to Divergence
Platinum depends on a whole class reaching Gold; Harmonic Break depends on Platinum across the arsenal.
Stage | Requirement | What to Do Next |
Military | Reach each weapon's level milestones | Collect eight Military camos while leveling |
Special | Reach challenge unlock levels and complete three objectives | Finish available objectives during leveling |
Gold | Unlock all eight Military and three Special camos on that weapon | Complete its Gold challenge |
Platinum | Complete Gold across the weapon class | Complete each weapon's Platinum challenge |
Harmonic Break | Complete Platinum on 33 weapons | Finish each weapon's Harmonic Break challenge |
Divergence | Complete 33 Harmonic Break challenges | Choose a mode-specific Mastery track |
Check the selected weapon's challenge before each session. If Platinum is locked because another weapon in the class lacks Gold, switch to that unfinished weapon. More headshots with the completed rifle will not solve the missing prerequisite.
Your First Camo Grinding Session
For a one- to two-hour MW4 session, keep one main weapon moving toward its next unlock. Use each return to the FOB as a checkpoint; deployment length will vary.
Choose Your First Weapon
Start with the Han 86 if you can obtain and replace it in DMZ. Its Multiplayer unlock at player level 4 and versatility in close- and longer-range fights support practicing different challenges with one weapon.
Its published Special challenges give you clear early targets: mounted kills at level 25 and silenced kills at level 46. Both can be attempted while earning the remaining weapon levels. Save its demanding DMZ Red challenge for a separate decision once Multiplayer opens.
If another gun is easier to keep supplied, use that first. For Multiplayer, Han 86 and ISO Nightshade unlock at player level 4, with VEL 46 at level 5. Consider ISO Nightshade or VEL 46 if you prefer close-range fights. Those player-level unlocks do not remove DMZ's weapon-access requirements, and none establishes a fastest-leveling ranking.
Check Progress after Each Deployment
Session Window | Action | Checkpoint |
Opening few minutes | Pick an obtainable weapon; note its next Military milestone and Special unlock | One immediate target selected |
First deployment and return | Follow DMZ Orders and attempt available Special objectives | At the FOB, check levels, counters, and replacement cost |
Further deployments, as time allows | Continue if progress and weapon access are steady; equip newly required attachments | After each return, decide whether to continue or change weapons |
Last return before stopping | Record the next unfinished requirement | Resume from that objective next session |
For a short session, stop after the first return if needed. For two hours, repeat the deployment-and-review loop while time permits. Choose a safe extraction opportunity; the clock should not force a rushed exit or another deployment.
Avoid leveling all 33 weapons before touching Special or Gold. Complete available Specials as you level, finish Gold when its prerequisites and match target are manageable, then move to another unfinished weapon in that class.
If the remaining objective is Han 86's DMZ Red, park it for Multiplayer and level the next accessible gun. Until Multiplayer becomes available, change weapons within DMZ.
Before looking into MW4 Bot Lobbies for easier camo grinding, prioritize weapon levels and unlocked Special challenges. Easier opponents cannot bypass the progression requirements that gate Gold and Platinum.
Start during DMZ Early Access
Secure Repeatable Weapon Access
Begin your MW4 grind with a weapon you can obtain and keep using. Follow DMZ Orders while building player and weapon progression; DMZ XP contributes to the overall 1-55 player track, while Multiplayer XP does not raise your separate DMZ level.
For solo deployments, keep engagements manageable and prioritize extracting a useful Weapon Manual over extending an unsafe fight.
The DMZ Gunsmith unlocks at DMZ Level 10. Extracting a weapon gives you a single instance to customize; losing it does not permanently unlock that weapon type.
Extract its Weapon Manual to establish repeatable access through the Gunsmith, where building weapons and attachments costs DMZ Cash. Camo application itself does not cost DMZ Cash.
If replacing the gun repeatedly interrupts your progress, level an accessible alternative. Once Multiplayer opens, use it for weapons whose DMZ acquisition costs are holding you back. Weapon progression is shared, so a lost DMZ gun does not mean you need to rebuild its weapon level from scratch.
Build Shared Attachment Access
Compatible attachments unlock once across the weapons that use them. When a later weapon reaches an attachment reward you already own, a Bonus Level Up skips that level. This can reduce repeated leveling as your collection grows.
Inspect your next weapon's progression for compatible attachments you already own; that overlap can reduce later leveling.
Unlock Military and Special Camos Together
Follow Each Weapon's Level Milestones
Military camos in Modern Warfare 4 require weapon levels. Their unlock milestones vary by weapon, so the Han 86 example does not apply to every gun. Its eight Military unlocks arrive at levels 10, 18, 25, 34, 42, 50, 57, and 65.
Keep leveling after the eighth unlock if a Special challenge remains locked. The Han 86's final Special challenge opens at level 72, its maximum weapon level. Collecting all Military camos therefore does not finish its leveling requirements for Gold.
Start Special Challenges When Available
Special challenges open at their own weapon levels. You can work on an unlocked challenge while continuing to earn weapon XP, instead of saving every objective for the end.
Han 86 Special Camo | Weapon Level | Multiplayer | DMZ |
Smoke | 25 | 20 mounted kills | 75 mounted kills |
Stormwave | 46 | 50 kills using a silencer | 125 enemy kills using a silencer |
Red | 72 | Three player kills without dying | Three enemy kills without taking damage, 50 times |
For example, begin mounted kills when Smoke opens. At level 46, equip a compatible silencer for Stormwave and continue leveling. Track both objectives if they remain available, but check that each counter actually advances before assuming one setup is serving both.
Red deserves a separate mode decision. In Multiplayer, surviving three kills satisfies the published objective. DMZ asks for 50 sequences of three kills without taking damage. Surviving incoming fire is insufficient for the DMZ version, so a player who struggles to avoid damage may prefer Multiplayer despite the availability of AI targets.
An unlocked Special camo joins the shared cosmetic pool. Equipping that appearance on another weapon does not complete the second weapon's own challenges or move it past its Gold prerequisites.
Choose Modes by Challenge
In MW4, compare the full objective, including its target type, repetition count, and any single-match restriction. A smaller target count can still take longer if the required opportunities rarely occur for you.
Challenge | Starting Choice | Switch When |
General kills and weapon levels | DMZ if you have reliable weapon access | Replacements and preparation consume too much time |
Mounted or silenced kills | Either mode; maintain the required setup | Your counter advances slowly despite frequent combat |
Headshots | DMZ for controlled AI engagements, or Multiplayer for its lower count | Armor, incoming fire, or missed shots prevent consistent progress |
Kills from behind | Multiplayer if close-range flanking works for you | Flanks repeatedly fail; compare eligible DMZ targets |
Double kills | The mode where you regularly find paired targets | Isolated engagements produce few qualifying doubles |
No-damage sequences | The mode where you can control exposure | You survive but repeatedly take damage before finishing |
Players considering COD MW4 Bot Lobbies for repetitive kill challenges should check the target requirements first. Multiplayer objectives may require player eliminations, while eligible DMZ challenges can count AI enemies. Always verify progress through the in-game tracker.
Use one normal session to check your current approach. Record the challenge counter before and after, alongside time spent gearing up and finding targets.
Compare progress as a fraction of the mode's requirement, since 20 kills toward a 125-kill target differs from 20 toward a 50-kill target. If you switch midway, inspect how the game displays the carried progress; do not assume a conversion formula.
Improve Your Qualifying Kill Rate
Use these combat adjustments as starting tactics, then judge them by your MW4 challenge counter. They are recommendations, not measured farming methods.
Objective | Try This | If It Fails |
Headshots | Hold your crosshair at head height before exposing yourself. Aim at a visible, relatively stationary target from cover; use controlled bursts if sustained recoil pulls you off the head | Shorten the engagement distance or change your sight before changing modes |
Kills from behind | Approach an enemy's rear through a side route while their attention is elsewhere; avoid announcing the flank with an early shot from the side | Stop repeating the same exposed route; seek another approach and confirm that rear kills register |
Double kills | Identify two eligible enemies before firing, reload first, and choose a position where both remain visible | Avoid isolated targets and long searches between kills; verify the counter without assuming an exact timing window |
No-damage sequences | Begin from cover with a loaded weapon and limit how many enemies can fire back at once. For the next attempt after taking damage, re-establish cover and choose fresh targets | Disengage if enemies control several angles; check the tracker rather than assuming healing preserves the sequence |
Mounted kills | Mount with a useful sightline and cover nearby; leave when enemies start attacking your exposed position | Change the angle instead of waiting through repeated deaths at the same mount |
Gold to Harmonic Break Grinding Order
Finish Gold Across a Class
After unlocking a weapon's Military and Special camos, complete its Gold objective: 15 eliminations in one Multiplayer match or 100 in one DMZ match. These are single-match requirements. A series of shorter attempts does not meet the stated condition.
Multiplayer is a sensible first attempt once available if 15 eliminations is comfortable for you. Choose DMZ when you can sustain a deployment long enough to reach 100. If you repeatedly fall short, change mode or improve weapon access before committing another long session.
Modern Warfare 4 Bot Lobbies may appeal to players struggling with repeated Gold attempts, but easier matchmaking does not remove the single-match requirement. You still need 15 qualifying Multiplayer eliminations or 100 DMZ eliminations in one match.
Work through an MW4 weapon class until every required weapon has Gold, then return for Platinum. You can level other classes while waiting for player-level unlocks; class grouping is an organizational recommendation, not a requirement to stay with assault rifles from start to finish.
Track All 33 Launch Weapons
Use the following class totals as a completion checklist. For each weapon, keep separate marks for Gold, Platinum, and Harmonic Break. Filling the Gold column for a class opens its next stage; filling Platinum across all classes opens Harmonic Break.
Weapon Class | Launch Weapons | Platinum Objective | Harmonic Break Objective |
Assault rifles | 8 | Headshots | Double kills |
SMGs | 5 | Kills from behind | Hipfire kills |
Shotguns | 2 | Hipfire kills | Kills without reloading |
LMGs | 3 | Kills without dying | Kills without releasing the trigger |
Marksman rifles | 3 | Prone kills | One-shot kills |
Sniper rifles | 3 | Prone kills | One-shot kills |
Pistols | 4 | Kills from behind | Hipfire kills |
Launchers | 4 | Kills without taking damage | Kills |
Melee | 1 | Kills without dying | Kills from behind |
Total | 33 | Finish every required weapon | Complete 33 challenges for Divergence |
These are objective types. Read each weapon's mode-specific target and required count before attempting it; the table does not make every DMZ challenge an unrestricted AI-kill task.
For the Han 86, Platinum becomes available after all eight assault rifles have Gold. Its challenge is 50 headshots against players in Multiplayer or 100 against enemies in DMZ. Use the mode where you can deliberately land headshots without spending most of the session recovering equipment or forcing unsuitable engagements.
Clear the Arsenal before Harmonic Break
Platinum on one class does not open Harmonic Break. Finish Platinum on all 33 required weapons, then return to the individual Harmonic Break objectives. The Han 86 example requires 25 player double kills in Multiplayer or 50 enemy double kills in DMZ.
Prepare for the class's restriction before deploying. Shotguns need kills without reloading, while LMGs need kills without releasing the trigger. Reload habits or short bursts that worked during leveling can interfere with these later objectives. Confirm progress on the first attempt, then continue with the same approach only if it counts.
Completing 33 Harmonic Break challenges awards Divergence and opens the first Mastery challenges. You can stop here with the Completionist goal finished.
Decide Whether to Continue to Mastery
For a new Modern Warfare 4 player, Gold on a favorite weapon is a useful first goal; class Platinum comes next. Keep Divergence as the full-arsenal target.
After Divergence, Multiplayer and DMZ each offer a separate, sequential three-tier Mastery track. Completing Multiplayer Mastery is not required to start DMZ Mastery.
Multiplayer progresses through Mercurial Drift, Polyatomic Reforged, and Orion Reforged. DMZ progresses through Chiral, Ripple Tide, and Helio.
Their objectives extend into repeated kill sequences, higher-tier enemies, tag extractions, and Legendary-weapon kills on a max-level Operator.
Choose a track when you reach it. Official regional announcements disagree on several totals, so check the live requirements and counting behavior before committing to the workload. Warzone joins in Season 1, with its Mastery challenges still classified in the launch announcement.
Avoid Camo Grinding Setbacks
Delay Optional Weapon Prestige
Weapon Prestige resets that weapon to level 1 and relocks attachments, with exceptions for Apex and Weapon Blueprint attachments. Earned camos remain, and Shared Attachments stay unlocked on other weapons. You can therefore retain a skin while losing access to the setup you were using for an unfinished challenge.
Postpone the reset if a silencer, magazine, or other attachment is helping you finish Completionist objectives. Weapon Prestige's separate Pyroclast rewards can wait until you are ready to level the weapon again.
Check Unlocks before Repeating Attempts
When a counter stays unchanged, check its prerequisite, weapon level, mode, target type, and equipment requirement. Then attempt one clear qualifying action and inspect the result. Do not spend another full session repeating an action that has not counted.
Keep the selected weapon's next unfinished requirement as your session goal. When that requirement is complete, move to the next dependency in your class checklist. This keeps the Modern Warfare 4 grind moving toward Divergence while leaving room to switch modes when the current objective stops producing progress.
