Summary
Can a Diablo 2 Resurrected Amazon beat Hell Hardcore when she is only allowed to use Runewords? That was the challenge behind this run—and it turned into one of the strangest Amazon builds imaginable.
The rules were brutal: solo self-found, Hardcore, no shared gear, and only Runeword items could be equipped by the Amazon and her mercenary. The run would only count after defeating Baal in Hell. For players, can buy D2R Items for prepare.
The biggest problem was obvious almost immediately. Amazon has several powerful build paths, but her strongest option, Javelin Amazon, could not be used properly because thrown Javelins cannot be socketed into Runewords.
That forced the character into a much more awkward progression.
Why This D2R Amazon Build Was So Difficult
The Runeword restriction completely changes how an Amazon normally plays.
Javelin skills are among the class's strongest options, but Javelins cannot become Runewords. Spears can work, but they consume both hands. Bows are another option, yet they require ammunition and leave fewer equipment slots available under the challenge rules.
The early game therefore started with a spear-based Amazon.
At level 16, the first major breakthrough arrived: Malice.
It was far from an endgame weapon, but Open Wounds, reduced target defense and anti-healing effects gave the Amazon enough damage to progress. A Nadir helmet followed, mostly because there were not many better Runeword options available at the time.
Then came Stealth, which immediately transformed the character.
Faster Run/Walk, Faster Hit Recovery, Dexterity, Mana Regeneration and Poison Resistance made Stealth one of the most valuable early Runewords in the entire run.
The Amazon Finally Finds Her Real Build
The turning point came when the character reached the higher Amazon skill levels.
Charge Strike provided enormous lightning damage, while Valkyrie and Decoy added crucial layers of protection for Hardcore. Instead of relying purely on gear, the build increasingly depended on skills, summons and positioning.
That was especially important because Amazon does not have the natural defensive tools that make some other D2R classes easier to play in Hardcore.
The solution was simple: don't get hit.
Valkyrie became a frontline tank. The mercenary absorbed additional damage. Decoy could redirect dangerous enemies, while the Amazon stayed behind them and attacked from range.
Eventually, the build moved away from spear combat entirely.
The answer was Freezing Arrow + Immolation Arrow.
This Frost Fire approach is already a recognized D2R Amazon archetype because it combines cold crowd control with fire damage against cold-resistant enemies. Current build references likewise recommend Freezing Arrow as the primary cold skill while using Immolation Arrow and Exploding Arrow for fire coverage.
Why Freezing Arrow Was Perfect for Hardcore
Freezing Arrow completely changed the run.
Instead of standing next to monsters with a spear, the Amazon could freeze entire groups from a safe distance. Piercing arrows made the effect even more powerful against tightly packed enemies.
That gave the build three layers of protection:
Freezing Arrow controlled large groups.
Valkyrie absorbed incoming attacks.
Hassin, the mercenary, provided another frontline target.
This was particularly important in Hell, where elemental immunities become a major problem.
The fire component solved part of that issue. Immolation Arrow could burn enemies that Freezing Arrow could not efficiently handle, giving the Amazon a genuine dual-element damage profile.
That is also why Frost Fire remains an attractive solo build concept: current D2R guides specifically note that combining cold and fire helps Amazon players deal with immunities in late Nightmare and Hell.
The Runewords That Made the Build Work
The equipment progression was almost as important as the skills.
Peace became one of the most valuable Amazon-specific pieces because of its +2 Amazon Skills and Valkyrie-related effects. Insight solved the enormous mana problem created by constantly firing elemental arrows.
Smoke provided desperately needed resistances, while Treachery became a major defensive tool for the mercenary thanks to its Fade proc.
Later, Duress gave the mercenary Crushing Blow and Open Wounds, which became particularly useful against bosses.
That distinction mattered because the Frost Fire Amazon could destroy large monster packs but was much less efficient against high-health bosses.
Hell Was Where the Challenge Nearly Fell Apart
Normal and Nightmare were relatively manageable once the build stabilized.
Hell was completely different.
Resistances became a huge issue, and the Amazon entered Hell with extremely poor defensive statistics. Some areas were particularly dangerous because of combinations of elemental immunities, ranged enemies and Conviction effects.
The Worldstone Keep was especially terrifying.
Gloams and other ranged monsters could potentially end a Hardcore run instantly. The safest strategy was therefore to move slowly, use Decoy and Valkyrie, and let the frontline create enough space for the Amazon to fire.
The Hell Forge also delivered another useful rune, while Countess farming supplied the materials needed to keep upgrading the Runeword setup.
And then came Diablo.
The fight exposed one of the build's biggest weaknesses: poor fire resistance.
Diablo's Firestorm and Ring of Fire could punish even a well-positioned Amazon, turning every movement into a potential death sentence.
But careful kiting, Valkyrie tanking and ranged elemental damage eventually brought him down.
Final D2R Amazon Build
After reaching the final stages of the challenge, the Amazon settled into a surprisingly effective Frost Fire configuration.

The final build was not the highest-DPS Amazon possible. That was never the point.
The real achievement was making a deliberately restricted character survive Hardcore Hell without relying on the usual Amazon gear progression.
The Verdict: One of the Weirdest Amazon Builds That Actually Worked
The challenge ultimately succeeded.
The Amazon reached level 81 and defeated Baal in Hell, using only Runewords while relying heavily on Freezing Arrow, Immolation Arrow, Valkyrie, Decoy and her mercenary.
Ironically, the Runeword restriction may have created a better build experiment than simply following the standard Amazon meta.
A normal Amazon could lean into Javelins, Faith, Infinity or other powerful endgame combinations. This character had none of those luxuries.
Instead, the restrictions forced a transition from a struggling spear Amazon into a Frost Fire Bowazon that could freeze enemies, burn immunes and survive through positioning rather than raw defense.
That makes this D2R Amazon build especially interesting for Hardcore and Solo Self Found players.
