Season 16's core changes revolve around War Plan customization, Horadric items upending the set system, and class balance adjustments across the board. This guide breaks down each system — mechanics, how to use it, and strategic recommendations — so you can quickly validate next season's build directions during the PTR.
1. War Plan Tactics: Replace Gold with Marks of Wisdom, Customize What You Farm
This is Season 16's most fundamental meta-progression change, and it applies to both Eternal and Seasonal modes.
Core change: Completing War Plan activities earns Marks of Wisdom, which are used to reset or adjust nodes in the War Plan tactics tree — no more gold cost. Previously, resetting a single node could cost tens of millions of gold. This change removes the cost barrier to experimenting with different farming strategies entirely.
Upper half of the tree: Control activity types
Invest up to 3 points in "activity nodes" to increase the chance that a given activity appears in your War Plan. For example:
3 points in Helltide + 1 point in Greater Helltide can produce multiple Greater Helltides in a row.
Useful for farming War Plan types you're currently missing (Lair Bosses, Infernal Hordes, Undercity).
Lower half of the tree: Control reward types
Invest up to 3 points in "reward nodes" to increase drop chances for specific rewards. Options include: armor, weapons, jewelry, Oducite, salvage materials, gems, gold, activity keys, Horadric Cube materials, and Talisman items.
Recommendation: If you need a specific gear type (e.g., rings to trigger Horadric affixes), put all reward nodes into "jewelry." If you're short on Oducite for Masterworking, invest in "Oducite." In the PTR, Marks of Wisdom are capped at 20 — enough to test 2–3 different farming strategies.
2. Tyrael's Boons: Seasonal Reward Customization Tree
This is Season 16's new seasonal War Plan tree, available to all seasonal players — no 《Lord of Hatred》 expansion required.
Points and structure: Up to 132 points obtainable, enough to fully select 4 options across the four paths (each path has 6 selectable nodes).
Four paths and recommended priority:
Path | Core Effect | Priority |
Trash for Treasure | Reduces Alchemist transmute costs; unlocks the Greater Temper recipe | Highest |
Merchant of Mystery | New merchant at Torment difficulty, buys caches with Forgotten Souls; can increase Ancestral cache chance | High |
Curious Addition | Modifies the Purveyor of Curiosity, increases chance for a second item; can boost Ancestral chance but doubles cost | Medium |
Scent of Gold | Increases gold and XP gain; can add Horadric Cube materials and gem fragments | Situational |
Why "Trash for Treasure" is top priority: Its Greater Temper recipe upgrades an already-tempered affix directly into a Greater Affix, costing 30 Scrolls of Restoration + 1,000 Oducite. That means no more re-tempering and praying to RNG — you can "promote" an existing affix outright. Combined with the path's node that gives a chance for Scrolls of Restoration when salvaging Ancestral items, scroll income becomes far more stable.
Tyrael's Boons vs. Seasonal Blessings: Tyrael's Boons do not replace Seasonal Blessings. Seasonal Blessings become a fixed system offering the same 5 blessings each time — the two stack.
3. Horadric Items: Rewriting the Rules of the Set System
This is Season 16's most build-defining mechanic. Horadric items are new legendary items that interact with the Talisman set system.
Core mechanics:
Horadric jewelry (rings, talismans): Each affix increases a specific set's set bonus count by +1. For example, if you have only 1 piece of the "Ring of the Nameless" set equipped and no set bonus, a Horadric affix on your ring bumps the count to 2 — instantly activating the 2-piece bonus.
Horadric armor/weapons: When you have at least a 2-piece set bonus active, these provide additional effects including skill ranks, damage, and defense.
Build implications: Traditionally, set bonuses require 2 or 3 pieces of the same set. Horadric jewelry lets you activate more set effects with fewer set pieces. In theory, you could have 2 or even 3 different 2-piece bonuses active simultaneously, then stack a Mythic Talisman on top.
Recommendation: In the PTR, prioritize testing "1 set piece + Horadric ring" combinations to identify which sets' 2-piece bonuses offer the best value in the current version. At the same time, use the War Plan tactics tree's reward nodes on "jewelry" to boost Horadric ring drop rates.
4. Helltides: Always Running, Cinders No Longer Reset
This is Season 16's most direct quality-of-life improvement for daily farming.
Changes:
Base-game zones' Helltides start on the hour; expansion zones (Skovos, Nahantu) start on the half-hour. That means at least one Helltide is always running (base-zone tides last 55 minutes, with expansion tides picking up at the half-hour).
Aberrant Cinders no longer reset between Helltides. Unspent cinders carry over to the next tide.
Strategic implications: No more rushing to find a chest before the tide ends. Accumulate cinders at your own pace and open chests in bulk. For War Plan objectives requiring Helltide completion, you can jump in anytime — no more waiting for a spawn window.
Note: Blizzard has not clarified whether dying still costs half your cinders. Test this separately during the PTR.
5. Class Change Highlights: Who Got Buffed, Who Got Nerfed
The most notable changes per class (based on PTR patch notes and community summaries).
Barbarian: Double Swing damage per hit increased from 75% to 150%; Frenzy's shrapnel chance from 30% to 50%. Charge's Hammer variant burn damage reduced from 252% to 126% — a response to the skill being abused for Pit 150 clears.
Necromancer: Bone Spear, Blood Lance, Blood Surge, and Sever all received damage increases (Bone Spear/Blood Lance 160%→175%). Sacrifice bonuses massively buffed: Warrior sacrifice resistance from 40% to 100%, Reaper sacrifice core skill damage from 15% to 40%, Bone Mage sacrifice damage from 20% to 40%. Blood Moon Breeches' crit damage replaced with damage reduction; Shadow Mage barrier reduced from 3% to 1%.
Paladin: Zealot Oath damage bonus increased from 35% to 45%, plus 15% damage reduction at maximum Fervor. Fortress's Resolve stacking bonus reduced from 4% to 2% and now only applies to Juggernaut skills — breaking the forced "Fortress + Barricade" pairing. Heaven's Fury's Final Justice variant now grants cooldown reduction instead of duration, allowing more frequent use.
Rogue: Barrage slightly buffed; Penetrating Shot's Ferocity stack reduced from 7% to 4%, Rain of Arrows' Ferocity upgrade from 10% to 4%. Shadow Imbuement no longer refreshes — instead, additional applications stack extra damage.
Sorceress: Incinerate gains a new "Intensity" mechanic: the longer you channel, the higher the damage bonus; at max Intensity, the bonus persists for 3 seconds after channeling ends (4 seconds for the Flamethrower variant). Enables a "channel → blink → keep the bonus" stutter playstyle. Strike of Storm Horn received a large Ball Lightning damage increase.
Spiritborn: Stinger nerfed; Counterattack's infinite-evade loop fixed. Harmony of the Abyss Walker per-spirit bonus damage reduced from 30% to 25%; Blaze of the Multitude per-spirit bonus from 50% to 40% — a direct nerf to all-spirit stacking builds.
Warlock: Nether Step animation speed increased, plus a new "Perpetual Darkness" variant (2 extra charges, 1 stack of Shadow Form every 0.5 seconds while the movement speed bonus is active). Fiend of Abaddon received a large damage increase, potentially reviving the "Susanoo" build. Apocalypse's Annihilation variant changed to up to 200 stacks at 20% bonus each (down from 100 stacks at 40%) — same total damage, but requires longer ramp-up.
6. PTR Testing Priority List
First priority (directly shapes next season's build directions):
Test Horadric ring + single set piece combinations to identify the highest-value 2-piece bonuses.
Test Tyrael's Boons' Greater Temper recipe to confirm whether Scroll of Restoration acquisition rates are sufficient.
If you main Necromancer or Paladin, prioritize validating Sacrifice and Zealot builds with the new bonuses.
Second priority (quality-of-life):
Run a few Helltides to confirm how cinder carry-over feels in practice, and the death-loss rules.
Use the War Plan tactics tree to customize activity types and test whether you can reliably roll the activities you need.
Third priority (wait and see):
Whether Spiritborn's nerfs are fatal, and whether Warlock's Fiend of Abaddon can support a new build. These likely need post-launch community data before conclusions can be drawn.
7. Notes and Cautions
PTR data is not final: Blizzard may adjust values during the PTR and before launch, especially class balance.
Live launch date unconfirmed: All current sources extrapolate December 1 from the Season 15 battle pass expiry, but Blizzard has not confirmed. Watch official announcements for the exact date.
Tyrael's Boons node resets cost gold: 5 million gold per point. While the War Plan tactics tree resets with Marks of Wisdom, the Tyrael's Boons tree still costs gold — budget accordingly.
Horadric item drop sources: Official notes do not specify Horadric affix drop rates or pools. During the PTR, log your drops to determine whether targeted farming via War Plan reward nodes is necessary.
Good luck testing builds in the PTR — and if you'd rather skip the gear grind entirely, you can buy Diablo IV Items safely through MMOEXP, a trusted marketplace for Diablo IV gear and materials, so you can assemble your Season 16 build without spending weeks farming for the right affixes. May you avoid dead ends when Season 16 goes live.
