Here are the biggest ESO Update 51 changes you should know about.
New Solo Dungeons in Update 51
One of the biggest additions is the new Solo Dungeons feature. Update 51 allows players to experience March of Sacrifices and Moonhunter Keep alone or with an NPC companion, letting you follow their stories without having to keep up with a group rushing toward the final boss.
Choose Your Solo Difficulty
Solo Dungeons use the new Meted Misfortunes system to adjust difficulty and rewards. With zero Misfortunes, the experience is designed to be relatively accessible, while additional Misfortunes increase enemy strength and add more challenging effects.
The higher difficulties provide better rewards, giving experienced players a reason to push beyond the basic story-focused experience. The system is intended to let players choose whether they simply want to experience the dungeon story or test a stronger solo build.
The dungeons also introduce new rewards and achievements, including new item sets and collectibles. Official PTS testing established four difficulty levels ranging from overland-like difficulty at zero Misfortunes to a much harder experience at three.
Nowhere Vault Adds a Randomized Challenge
The Nowhere Vault is another major addition and offers a completely different type of ESO activity.
Instead of simply fighting through a fixed dungeon, the Vault contains randomized rooms and different types of challenges. These can include puzzles, stealth encounters, navigation obstacles, combat challenges, and hidden secrets.
How the Nowhere Vault Works
Players can explore the Vault solo or with a group. The experience is divided into different wings, with the rooms and challenges changing between runs.
You need Wondrous Nowhere Keys to unlock rooms. These keys are tradeable and can be acquired from activities including Heists, Thieves Troves, Delves, World Bosses, Treasure Chests, Favors, Dynamic Encounters, Rumors, and Solo Dungeons. Existing Unformed Planar Keys are converted into the new keys.
The Vault also contains hidden objectives, special treasure chests, Story Rooms, and Jackpot Rooms. This makes exploration important rather than simply rushing from one encounter to another.
Rewards can include item sets, antiquity leads, crafting materials, furnishings, and other valuable items. The randomized structure is designed to make the Vault replayable.
Rumors Create a New Way to Explore Tamriel
Update 51 also introduces the Rumors system. Unlike traditional quests, Rumors do not simply give you a sequence of objective markers to follow.
Instead, you receive clues and have to interpret them, explore the world, and work out how to solve the mystery.
Rumors are tracked through a new section of the quest journal, where collected clues can be reviewed as you progress. The system includes different categories such as Whispers, Plots, and Conspiracies.
Rewards can include consumables, set items, gold, and upgrade items connected to the Prowler's Amulet Mythic. Rumors also play a role in discovering some of the hidden secrets within the Nowhere Vault.
Major Quality-of-Life Updates
Update 51 also contains numerous smaller improvements that can make everyday gameplay smoother.
Achievement Pinning and Antiquities Improvements
Players can now pin an unearned achievement to the HUD, similar to a pinned Golden Pursuit. A new keybind also makes it easier to cycle between pinned objectives.
Antiquities are receiving several improvements as well. Early Scrying and Excavation levels progress faster, while the Antiquarian's Eye becomes more convenient when searching for dig sites.
Antiquity leads also receive an improved initial drop rate until the associated Codex has been completed, reducing some of the grind involved in collecting them.
Customizable HUD
PC players also receive a customizable HUD beta. Most UI elements can be moved and repositioned, allowing players to create a layout that better fits their preferred playstyle.
The feature is initially limited to PC, with console support planned for a later update.
ESO 51 Continues System Hybridization
One of the largest underlying changes in Update 51 is the continued hybridization of ESO's systems.
For example, Brutality now provides both Weapon and Spell Damage, while Savagery provides both Weapon and Spell Critical Chance. This removes some of the old separation between physical and magical bonuses.
Alchemy receives a similar treatment. Some previously separate traits are consolidated, including Weapon Power and Spell Power into a combined Increased Power effect, while Weapon Critical and Spell Critical are combined into a single Critical trait.
New reagents and potion effects are also introduced, giving Alchemy more options while fitting the broader hybridization changes.
Mundus Stone Changes
The Warrior Mundus now provides both Weapon and Spell Damage.
The Apprentice Mundus also receives a major redesign, providing an experience and Inspiration gain bonus instead of its previous Spell Damage effect. This makes it particularly useful for leveling and crafting.
Class Changes in Update 51
Update 51 brings changes to almost every class, although Dragonknight, Nightblade, Templar, Necromancer, Sorcerer, and Werewolf receive some of the most noticeable adjustments.
Dragonknight
Dragonknight receives both buffs and nerfs.
Flame Lash and Power Lash are reduced in healing and damage, while Dragonfire Breath receives a useful improvement. Its cost is reduced, and the skill now provides damage reduction while channeled.
The Dragonknight class mastery also changes its stacking behavior, allowing more stacks and changing how quickly they decay.
These changes make Dragonknight's defensive options particularly interesting for solo builds.
Nightblade
Nightblade's Strife and its morphs are adjusted to scale their damage based on current health. The skill also changes how its resource cost works by incorporating both Magicka and Health.
Swallow Soul receives additional attention, retaining strong healing while remaining somewhat behind Concealed Weapon in damage production.
Templar
Templar's Balanced Warrior passive is redesigned around Armor and the number of Templar skills equipped. This gives the class additional offensive value while compensating for changes to its old Sorcery-related passive.
Judgment's Brand also receives a small increase to its damage bonus.
Necromancer and Sorcerer
Necromancer receives changes to Frozen Colossus and its morphs, including a reduced Ultimate cost and increased damage.
Sorcerer receives several adjustments to its passives, Crystal Weapon, Blood Magic, Conservation of Energy, and Static Reverberation. Its old Minor Prophecy functionality is also replaced with a unique offensive penetration effect.
Werewolf Nerfs Make Sustain More Important
The Werewolf is one of the most heavily affected playstyles in Update 51.
A number of Werewolf abilities receive higher resource costs, making Magicka and Stamina sustain more important. Pounce, Carnage, Roar, Raging Claws, and other abilities all receive cost adjustments, while several healing effects are reduced.
The purpose is to make Werewolves give up more resources when building for burst damage and survivability, particularly in PvP.
However, Rampage becomes even more important because it provides the Werewolf's major cost-reduction benefit. This means players need to manage their transformation and Rampage timing more carefully rather than simply maintaining abilities without considering sustain.
The final U51 PTS cycle specifically noted that the team was continuing to monitor Werewolf feedback and combat data after the changes.
More Combat and PvP Changes
Update 51 also changes several other skills and systems.
Elemental Susceptibility now has a Magicka cost instead of being free, while Imbue Weapon and its morphs receive duration and activation changes.
PvP also receives adjustments to Battle Spirit and damage shields. Battleground queues are being consolidated into larger team formats, while the competitive queue remains focused on two-sided matches.
These changes add another layer to the broader combat overhaul accompanying the new PvE content.
What Update 51 Means for ESO Players
ESO Update 51 is more than a content drop. The combination of Solo Dungeons, Nowhere Vault, Rumors, hybridized systems, QoL improvements, and class changes affects how many different types of players approach the game.
Solo players now have more structured content to tackle, while explorers can investigate Rumors and the randomized Vault. Crafters and collectors benefit from improvements to Antiquities and Alchemy, and build-focused players have new class and combat changes to account for
Werewolf players in particular will need to reconsider resource management, while Dragonknight and several other classes gain new tools for solo and PvE builds.
With the update's new activities and system-wide adjustments arriving together, Update 51 gives both solo and group players plenty of reasons to revisit their builds, explore the new content, and adapt to the latest version of ESO. To gear up for all of it, The Elder Scrolls Online Gold can help you acquire the equipment.
