Summary
The Temple system in Path of Exile 2 is one of the most rewarding endgame farming activities when built correctly. Instead of trying to develop every room, beginners should focus on creating efficient Smithy chains, protecting key rooms, and completing only the most profitable sections of the Temple for consistent rewards.
Understand the Goal of Temple Farming
Temple farming has changed significantly compared to earlier versions. Rather than filling the Temple with long room chains, the current approach is to build several high-value Smithy rooms while keeping the overall layout compact and efficient. This reduces the time spent inside each Temple and increases the number of profitable runs you can complete.
For new players, the objective is simple: create multiple Level 3 Smithy rooms that can later become higher-value forge rooms. These rooms provide access to valuable Temple-specific crafting items, making them the primary source of profit.
Step 1: Position the Architect Before Building
Before placing many rooms, make sure the Architect is located in a favorable position near the upper-left portion of the Temple layout. If necessary, defeat the Architect several times to move its location before committing to your design.
Starting with a good Architect position makes it much easier to expand profitable Smithy chains later without wasting valuable room connections.
Step 2: Build Basic Smithy Chains
Once the Temple is ready, begin by placing basic Smithy rooms along your intended farming path.
Do not worry about filling every available space. Instead:
Place your initial Smithies.
Upgrade them using Golem Workshops.
Continue extending only the Smithy chain instead of creating multiple unrelated branches.
This focused approach allows your Temple to develop much faster than trying to improve every available room.
Step 3: Use Generators to Upgrade Smithies
Generators play a key role in increasing Smithy levels.
After placing a Generator near your Smithy chain, nearby Smithies receive additional levels. Combined with Golem Workshops, your earliest Smithies can naturally reach Level 3 without requiring extra resources.
Before reaching Level 3 Smithies, there is little reason to repeatedly run the Temple. Instead, spend time improving your layout first so each future run becomes more rewarding.
Step 4: Protect Important Rooms
One of the biggest challenges during Temple progression is destabilization.
As you continue expanding, important rooms may disappear if they are not properly protected. To reduce this risk:
Place Armories around valuable Smithies.
Add Garrisons when appropriate.
Avoid building unnecessarily long chains.
Leave extra low-value rooms throughout the Temple as "bait" for destabilization.
These disposable rooms help absorb destabilization, making it less likely that your important Smithy chain will be affected.
Step 5: Expand Carefully Instead of Building Everything
Many beginners assume every empty space should be filled, but doing so actually increases destabilization pressure.
A better strategy is to maintain two or three complete Smithy chains with proper protection rather than trying to develop every room. This creates a stable Temple that is easier to maintain over multiple farming sessions.
If additional paths become available, use them only when they contribute directly to protecting your valuable rooms or expanding another Smithy chain.
