Summary
If your Evasion character frequently loses Energy Shield during difficult encounters, Ghost Dance is one of the best Persistent Buff Skills to improve survivability in Path of Exile 2. By periodically generating Ghost Shrouds, the skill converts incoming hits into reliable Energy Shield recovery, making it particularly effective for Evasion-focused builds. This guide explains how to unlock Ghost Dance, how it works, the best skill combinations, leveling progression, and the important changes introduced in Patch 0.5 while helping you make better use of your POE2 Currency.
Step 1: Unlock Ghost Dance
Before you can use Ghost Dance, you must first unlock the skill through the Gemcutting system.
Open the Gemcutting menu and engrave Ghost Dance using a Level 4 or higher Uncut Spirit Gem. Once engraved, equip the resulting Persistent Buff Skill Gem to activate the skill permanently while enough Spirit is reserved.
Because Ghost Dance is a Persistent Buff Skill, it remains active throughout combat and continuously provides its defensive effects without requiring manual activation.
Step 2: Understand How Ghost Dance Works
Ghost Dance is designed for characters that rely on Evasion Rating and Energy Shield instead of heavy Armour.
When Ghost Dance is active, it periodically generates Ghost Shrouds. If you are hit while you have a Ghost Shroud, one Ghost Shroud is immediately consumed, restoring Energy Shield based on your Evasion Rating.
Rather than preventing damage completely, Ghost Dance helps your character recover quickly after taking hits, making sustained combat much safer.
The skill provides the following effects:
Gain a Ghost Shroud every 10.1–12 seconds
Modifiers to Cooldown Recovery Rate also apply to Ghost Shroud gain frequency
Maximum 3 Ghost Shrouds
When Hit, lose a Ghost Shroud
Regenerate Energy Shield equal to 2% of your Evasion Rating per second if you have lost a Ghost Shroud Recently
Quality adds additional bonuses:
0–20% increased Reservation Efficiency
Advanced Thaumaturgy provides:
Maximum 0–1 additional Ghost Shrouds
These mechanics reward players who invest heavily in Evasion, allowing Ghost Dance to restore larger amounts of Energy Shield whenever a Ghost Shroud is consumed.
Step 3: Pair Ghost Dance with the Right Skills
Ghost Dance becomes considerably stronger when combined with complementary defensive skills.
Wind Dancer
Wind Dancer is one of the best companions for Ghost Dance.
Because Wind Dancer increases your Evasion Rating while also knocking enemies back, it becomes easier to avoid consecutive hits. This gives Ghost Dance more time to regenerate Ghost Shrouds while also increasing the amount of Energy Shield restored whenever one is consumed.
Grim Feast
Grim Feast is another excellent choice.
The skill generates additional Energy Shield, allowing it to Overflow your normal maximum Energy Shield. Combined with Ghost Dance's recovery effect, this creates a much larger defensive buffer during difficult encounters.
Players focusing on Energy Shield-based builds should strongly consider running these skills together.
Step 4: Choose Compatible Support Gems
Several Support Gems work particularly well with Ghost Dance.
Tier 1
Fast Forward
Precision
Tier 2
Herbalism
There are currently no dedicated Tier 3 Support Gems for Ghost Dance.
Selecting the appropriate Support Gems allows Ghost Dance to fit more naturally into defensive Spirit setups while supporting your overall build.
