Path of Exile: How to Build Herald Stacking Ignite Penance Brand for Red Maps in Six Hours (Phrecia Event)
Summary
This guide covers the Herald Stacking Ignite Penance Brand build for the Phrecia event, focusing on getting to red maps within six hours of league start. The build uses five heralds with Coming Calamity for reservation, scales ignite damage through Penance Brand, and leverages cheap unique items like Replica Prison Weave and Night's Lantern to carry you through early mapping. While squishier than the Elementalist variant, this build offers superior clear speed and mapping potential once properly geared.
Leveling Strategy
For leveling, I recommend using Armor Brand combined with Firestorm as your single-target ability. This combination provides smooth clearing through the campaign while maintaining decent boss damage. Rush Breath of Flames and Searing Heat on the passive tree early, as these nodes provide significant damage boosts.
The reason you don't want to play Penance Brand on the herald until Merciless Lab is that you have no ability to ignite until then. Once you complete Merciless Lab and take your complex ascendancy node, you gain massive damage multipliers and elemental effect bonuses. Complex provides huge ignite damage on kill, and I found it works perfectly fine all the way through red maps. Even during boss fights where Complex isn't active, most bosses have ads that allow you to maintain the buff.
Eventually, you'll want to swap to Stormfire, which is a cheap one-to-two chaos orb item. When you make this swap, ensure you grab the lightning mastery and focus on mostly lightning damage. You also need to reach 100% chance to ignite since Stormfire only allows lightning damage to ignite, not guarantee it.
Passive Tree Priorities
Early on, focus on the fire damage nodes before investing in clusters. Searing Heat is particularly valuable for DPS, offering 4.2% damage per node point. Breath of Flames provides excellent ignite chance and damage, which is essential once you transition to Stormfire.
The early tree should prioritize:
Breath of Flames
Searing Heat
Holy Flame (mid-game)
Armor/ES mastery in the Templar area
Defensive nodes like Safeguard and Arcane Guarding
For ascendancy, I'm currently running the Herald version. If you're going to change a node, I recommend swapping one of the side nodes rather than Coming Calamity. The reservation solved is essential for running all five heralds.
The endgame tree will look similar to the Elementalist version, but early padding differs. I'll provide a detailed PoB for both early and mid-game versions.
Gear Progression
Leveling Uniques
Replica Prison Weave costs a couple of chaos orbs and will hard carry you until red maps damage-wise. This item provides essential stats for the build's damage scaling.
Night's Lantern is another excellent early unique. It's really good before you get Obliteration, and honestly, you probably don't need to bother with Obliteration until later, when you have the ignite proliferation glove implicit from Eater (or Exarch). Night's Lantern will last you until red maps and is a couple of chaos orbs.
Barracks Grip gives you leech, which pairs well with Conflux for always shocking enemies. This provides decent damage and sustain.
Endgame Gear
Divine Sentinel is incredibly strong. Link it to Herald of Purity, and you get one orb per herald. With four Heralds of Purity, you typically have about three out of six orbs active at any time. These provide:
Chaos resistance
Reduced curse effect
Big mana regen
Life regen
Flat lightning and fire damage
The flat damage from these orbs is quite good for this character. The build runs all five heralds along with Arctic Armor and Tempest Shield, which is possible due to Coming Calamity.
Important Glove Implicit
You need the ignite proliferation modifier from Eater (or possibly Exarch) embers. This is how you spread Ignite with Obliteration. Once you have this glove implicit, you can switch to Obliteration. Night's Lantern is excellent until then.
Defensive Gear
The build can feel a bit squishier than the Elementalist. Look for:
A high block shield like Champion Kite Shield (high base block)
Big armor/ES body armor (ideally 2,000-3,000 armor)
Armor/ES on all off pieces
Granite flask for extra physical mitigation
Take the armor/ES mastery and the block mastery. Safeguard and Arcane Guarding nodes provide essential defense.
Reservation and Auras
Reservation is solved through three key elements:
Coming Calamity
Herald buff effect nodes
Mana mastery
This setup allows you to run all five heralds:
Herald of Ash
Herald of Ice
Herald of Thunder
Herald of Purity
Herald of Agony
Along with Arctic Armor and Tempest Shield for additional defense.
Map Progression Strategy
This build reaches red maps in about six hours of playtime. The key is efficient mapping with the ignite proliferation mechanics. Once you have the glove implicit and Obliteration, clearing packs is incredibly smooth.
For mapping, I'm using Ignite Proliferation linked to Penance Brand. However, you could also run Lightning Proliferation to spread shocks with Conflux. Both work fine. Ignite Proliferation might cause slightly less damage, but the shock spread from Lightning Proliferation could end up being better overall. An ample supply of POE currency will be of great help to you.
Ascendancy Options
While Elementalist is still quite good, the Herald version offers unique advantages. However, there are several options to consider:
Golem Elementalist provides significant power if you take nodes like Mastermind of Discord and run pyromaniac (or similar). This works well with the stacking effect.
Chieftain is arguably the best for mapping due to Death Fury. You'll ignite with this anyway since you're playing an ignite build, making this very strong defensively. Tasalio's Storm's Brace provides excellent defensive utility. Most of the other nodes are dead, though, so you'll have to roll over them.
Occultist with Profane Bloom is probably the best pop effect. Run a curse like Flammability on a hit ring or use Blasphemy.
Overall, if you want bossing power, the golem nodes are technically the most effective. For mapping, Chieftain's Death Fury is insane.
Pinnacle Boss Tech
For boss fights, you can switch your pantheon nodes. Use Future Guilt for general mapping, but for specific bosses:
Exarch: Switch to Future Anguish for easy max fire resistance
Eater: Use Future Regret
You don't need to respec everything—just change one node. This is a solid tech for pinnacle boss fights. Future Guilt is probably the best overall for normal mapping, but Ash might be better depending on your current damage profile.
Defensive Considerations
The Herald version is squishier than the Elementalist on league start, so pay extra attention to:
Block chance - Prioritize a high block shield
Armor/ES balance - Your body armor should have 2,000-3,000 armor ideally
Granite Flask - Run one for physical damage reduction
Safeguard and Arcane Guarding - These nodes provide essential defense
Block mastery - Take this for additional mitigation
Flat fire damage and chaos damage are the weakest defensive areas early on, so prioritize resistances for these elements.
Conclusion
The Herald Stacking Ignite Penance Brand is a powerful choice for the Phrecia event, capable of reaching red maps in about six hours. While the build is squishier than Elementalist variants, it offers superior clear speed with proper gear progression. Focus on grabbing cheap uniques like Replica Prison Weave and Night's Lantern early, solve reservations through Coming Calamity, and prioritize defensive gear once you reach mapping.
With the right approach, this build will carry you through red maps and pinnacle bosses efficiently. Good luck with your Phrecia event runs.
