Path of Exile: The Complete Guide to the "Sir Bongsalot" Stun Build

Path of Exile Jun-18-2026 PST

Summary

This guide covers one of the most underrated mechanics in Path of Exile: Stun. While many players overlook this mechanic, it can be scaled to incredible heights. This build, affectionately named "Sir Bongsalot," demonstrates the full potential of stun-focused gameplay using Heavy Strike, Trauma Support, and extensive stun threshold reduction.

1. Understanding the Stun Mechanic

Whenever you land a hit, there is a chance to stun the target, interrupting any action the target was performing. Damage over time, reflected damage from Impale, and self-damage from Thorns cannot inflict stun.

The chance to stun is calculated using a specific formula. Any hit that deals more than 50% of the target's maximum health will always inflict a stun. The target's Energy Shield always has a 50% chance to avoid being stunned. Melee hits and physical hits receive a bonus to stun chance, while non-physical and ranged hits receive a penalty.

Since dealing 50% of a target's maximum health per hit is nearly impossible, stun threshold reduction becomes essential. This stat reduces the damage required to stun by counting the target's maximum life as a lower value for stun calculation. Aim for at least 75% reduced stun threshold. With 75% reduction, the target effectively counts as being at only 25% of its maximum health.

Default stun duration is 350 milliseconds minimum. Stuns over 700 milliseconds display a swirl effect above the target's head. Ruthless Blows have a base duration of 800 milliseconds and stack with the default duration. Stun duration can be scaled further with modifiers.

2. Why Heavy Strike?

Heavy Strike is one of the best skills for a stun build. It is a melee physical strike skill, gaining the 50% bonus from being both melee and physical. It has inherent 25% reduced stun threshold and a high chance to deal double damage, which can be pushed to 100% with additional sources. Linked with Trauma Support, it gains significant flat physical damage and massive stun duration through trauma stacks, totaling up to 12 seconds when combined with other sources.

Trauma stacks cause self-damage. This build manages it through significant physical damage reduction, instant leech from Gore Dancer, and conversion of some physical damage taken to chaos damage.

3. Damage Scaling Through Rage

Rage grants 1% more damage per rage. With 114 rage and 110% increased rage effect from Berserk and Right of Ruin, the total damage multiplier reaches 239% more damage. Grave of the Slaughter provides 239% increased attack speed.

4. Boss Stun Strategy

Most bosses cannot be stunned during certain actions and gain stun immunity for 4 seconds after recovering from a stun. The goal is not to stun them frequently, but to make the stun count when it lands.

Mark the target with Warlord's Mark, ramp up to at least 40 trauma stacks, then activate your tincture and wait for the stun to land. Once the target is stunned, continue hitting until reaching 6-7 trauma stacks. After this point, every instance of self-damage counts as a Savage Hit, allowing activation of Vengeful Cry. Then activate Berserk and continue attacking.

5. Equipment Guide

The gear shown is fully min-maxed. Focus on the modifiers highlighted below.

Main Weapon: A mace designed to improve stun potential and clear speed. Since this is off-meta, such weapons are rarely available on trade. Craft it yourself or use a Pile Driver with high physical damage and attack speed.

Body Armor: Look for high armor (at least 4.5k maximum armor) and approximately 7% physical damage reduction. The Onslaught modifier from Essence of Insanity synergizes with self-damage. For implicits, prioritize War Cry buff effect and physical damage taken as chaos.

Helmet: The fractured War Cry buff effect modifier is found on items dropped from Corel in Syndicate. Prioritize high maximum life and resistances, with an open prefix to craft War Cry buff effect. For implicits, roll physical damage taken as chaos and reduced mana cost of attack skills.

Gloves: Look for high maximum life, attack speed, and resistances. For implicits, prioritize additional strike target and ignore enemy physical damage reduction.

Boots: Focus on high life, at least 25% movement speed, and required resistances. For implicits, prioritize action speed.

Belt: Desiccated Belt provides action speed and movement speed. This is typically the most expensive item. Alternatives include Mageblood, Headhunter, or a good rare belt that can be anointed.

Rings: Fugitive Ring grants maximum chaos resistance. Prioritize high chaos resistance, maximum life, and an open prefix to craft reduced mana cost of attack skills. Mirror the ring using Calandra's Touch for the second slot.

Amulet: A String of Glass with Endurance, Natural Authority, Silent Ambition, and Berserk King anoints is sufficient. For SSF, use a decent rare amulet with Berserk King.

6. Gem Setup

Link Heavy Strike with Brutality, Melee Physical Damage, Trauma, Ruthless, and Greater Ancestral Call Support. Heavy Strike is imbued with Endurance Charge on Melee Stun. If you lack this, swap out Ancestral Call Support for it.

Use Pride, Purity of Elements, and Precision Stone linked to Enlighten Support. Use Vengeful Cry linked to More Duration, Expert Retaliation, and Life Tap Support. Use Molten Shell linked to Cast When Damage Taken and Life Tap Support. Use Leap Slam linked to Faster Attacks. Use War Banner, Ancestral Cry, and Berserk linked to Life Tap Support.

7. Jewel Setup

One large cluster jewel grants Overlord, Fuel the Fight, and Heavy Hitter. The other grants Force Multiplier, Iron Breaker, and Master the Fundamentals (skip this node).

Three Megalomaniac jewels are used. Two grant Born of Chaos and Heavy Hitter. Born of Chaos is critical. If unavailable, roll it on a small cluster jewel for Chaos Resistance. The third grants Enduring Composure and Warning Shout. Enduring Composure is the only source of Endurance Charges. If unavailable, roll it on a small cluster jewel for armor.

Natural Affinity provides 10% less damage taken and 20% chance to deal double damage while stationary. Flesh and Flame jewels allocate Unbreakable from Juggernaut. Watcher's Eye grants Intimidate and increased physical damage while affected by Pride. Glorious Vanity grants Divine Flesh Keystone, providing exceptional tankiness with 90% maximum Chaos Resistance.

8. Rune Grafts

Rune Graft of Warp provides increased buff duration and reduced debuff duration, working for Trauma Stacks and Windfall Cry. Rune Graft of River provides life recovery on low life and prevents death from Trauma stacks. Rune Graft of Treachery provides increased mana reduction efficiency with no downside.

9. Final Notes

This is an off-meta, unconventional build that relies on understanding stun mechanics and scaling them effectively. The build requires ramp-up time and knowledge of boss stun immunity windows. While the playstyle may not suit everyone, it offers a rewarding experience for those who master its timing—and it's surprisingly affordable to gear up, since most of the key items cost far less than high-demand meta gear priced in POE exalted orbs.
