PoE Return of the Ancients: Crazy Cat Lady Build Guide

Summary

Unleash a horde of heat-seeking feline projectiles with this Soulrend of the Spiral Cast on Crit build—expensive and complex, but watching cats delete Uber bosses is worth every divine. It revolves around Cast on Crit Cyclone to trigger Soulrend dozens of times per second while stacking life for defenses. This is not a league starter; it requires expensive uniques and complex recovery mechanics, meaning cheap POE currency won't substitute for the heavy investment needed. With sufficient currency, however, it is one of the most satisfying builds available.

Core Mechanics Explained

The Triple Threat Combo

The build's power comes from three interacting mechanics:

Soulrend of the Spiral fires five projectiles that infinitely pierce and can shotgun enemies . With the Cat MTX, each projectile becomes a feline seeking out enemies like heat-seeking missiles.

Cast on Crit triggers Soulrend when Cyclone crits. With the Screams of the Desiccated belt guaranteeing every hit crits, you trigger spells at maximum efficiency .

Dissolution of the Flesh + Eternal Youth creates your defensive backbone. Instead of taking damage directly, you reserve life. Eternal Youth makes your life recharge like energy shield, giving you massive sustain .

Understanding the Life Recharge Mechanic

Dissolution of the Flesh reserves life equal to damage taken, which normally interrupts Eternal Youth's life recharge. However, with Petrified Blood keeping you at low life, you avoid the interruption — reserving from your maximum life pool doesn't reduce your current low-life pool .

This split effectively gives you two health bars:

The red portion acts as mana (spent on skills)

The total pool reserves damage without interrupting recharge

The result? Roughly 3,000 effective life regen per second compared to just 800 from standard regen .

Campaign Progression

Act 1-2: Essence Drain Starter

Start with Essence Drain, Contagion, and Blight. Apply Essence Drain for heavy damage-over-time, spread it with Contagion, and finish survivors with Blight. Choose Alira during the bandit quest for +15% elemental resistances .

Act 3: Soulrend Arrives

Complete Act 3 to obtain Soulrend. Its projectiles seek enemies and pierce infinitely, making clear speed exceptional. This is when you can apply the Cat MTX .

Ascendancy: Bog Shaman

Your first ascendancy points go into Sanguine Power, removing all energy shield but converting ES from gear into flat life at the cost of -3 max life per level . This frees up your body armor slot, allowing much higher life totals than wearing The Apostate .

Later, grab Pandemic for damage and Toad Pact for projectile speed. Your final points come from defeating The King in the Mists, unlocking the Nameless Bloodline ascendancy for poison immunity .

The Big Switch: Health Recovery Setup

At around level 84, purchase these core items:

Dissolution of the Flesh removes all energy shield (already gone from ascendancy) and reserves life instead of direct damage .

Eternal Youth applies energy shield recharge to life instead . Combined with Dissolution, you get massive sustain.

Petrified Blood locks you to low life. With Dissolution, this allows you to access your full life pool despite being on low life .

Mark of Submission for Despair on hit, and Malachai's Simula for Blood Magic to cast spells from life.

The result: you sacrifice life to cast spells and immediately recharge it, even while being hit .

Transition to Cast on Crit

The Trigger Rate Math

With Cast while Channeling, you trigger roughly 2.8 times per second. With Cast on Crit and a high-attack-speed dagger, that jumps to 6.06 triggers per second at the base breakpoint. With cooldown investment, you reach 7.58 triggers per second .

Each trigger fires five Soulrend projectiles. At 7.58 triggers per second, that's nearly 38 cats per second before accounting for Nimis returning projectiles .

Why attack speed matters: Soulrend projectiles are cast spells, but CoC triggers from Cyclone hits. More attack speed means more Cyclone hits, meaning more triggers. Attack speed doesn't make Soulrend cast faster — it makes it trigger more often .

Imperial Scheme is ideal as the highest attack speed claw/dagger base .

Key Uniques and Their Roles

Screams of the Desiccated guarantees all hits crit. This is non-negotiable for CoC reliability .

Rathpith Globe gives 5% spell crit and 5% spell damage per 100 life while sacrificing 10% life on skill use. Perfect for life stacking .

Nimis makes projectiles fire randomly around you and return. Normally you'd use Returning Projectiles Support, but it reduces damage by two-thirds. Nimis lets cats deal full damage twice .

Scoundrel's Kiss gives 15% more damage per ferocity stack. Build ferocity with Dash .

Marilyn's Fallacy provides enormous crit multi at the cost of crit chance — irrelevant because Screams of the Desiccated guarantees crits .

Gladiator's Triumph charm provides guaranteed crit on first damage and overpower stacks.

Forbidden Flame/Flesh with Shaper of Storms lets your chaos damage shock enemies, adding another damage multiplier .

The Elegant Hubris Tech

This build's attribute requirements are punishing. The solution is Elegant Hubris commemorated to Caspiro, which changes nearby keystones to Supreme Ostentation. This allows you to ignore all attribute requirements — at the cost of gaining no bonuses from attributes .

This frees you to use tattoos for maximum life instead of attribute tattoos. Every small attribute node can become +2% maximum life .

Damage Scaling

Multipliers Stacked

Rathpith Globe: 5% spell damage per 100 life (roughly 900% at 18k life)

Pain Attunement: 30% more damage on low life

Shaper of Storms: Shock from chaos damage

Wither: Up to 90% increased chaos damage taken

Frozen Memories: 43% increased cold damage to chilled (tripled against frozen)

Ferocity: 15% more damage per stack from Scoundrel's Kiss

Lucky Block: From Forbidden Tattoo ascendancy reroll

Cluster Jewel Setup

An 8-passive chaos cluster jewel with:

Unspeakable Gifts: 10% chance for enemies to explode

Touch of Cruelty: Hinder enemies, they take 10% increased chaos damage

Overwhelming Malice: 10% chance for Unholy Might on crit, giving 25% chance to inflict Withered

Wither stacks to 15, giving 90% increased chaos damage taken — effectively doubling your damage .

Final Stats and Performance

At full investment, the build reaches:

18,397 life

100% crit chance

580% crit multi

222 million DPS (best-case scenario with Nimis returning projectiles)

1.16 million effective hit pool

96% evasion

77% fire, 76% cold, 76% lightning resist

Uber Boss Performance:

Uber Elder: Tank AoEs xcand slams effortlessly

Uber Cortex: Hold right-click and AFK

Uber Dread: Clean kill

Uber Eater: Drops without issue

Searing Exarch: Ground degens are the one weakness — they bypass block and degen through recharge

Critical Weakness: Ground Degens

Ground damage-over-time effects are the build's Achilles' heel. They cannot be blocked and will degens through your life recharge since DOT interrupts recharge . Bosses like Searing Exarch and Maven exploit this by covering arenas in degens.

Mitigation: Stay mobile during degens, use movement skills to reposition, and consider dropping damage for more regen during these fights.
