WoW Forever has not announced how many raid tiers older best-in-slot (BiS) items might remain competitive through. Blizzard wants new raids to offer stronger equipment while keeping power gaps small enough for some older items to retain a place in optimal builds. Those items will eventually be replaced.

That raises a practical gearing question: does a new drop improve your complete setup, or just one item's stats? An older piece may remain useful because of a set bonus. Whether it remains BiS depends on how it compares with the alternatives for your specialization.

The longer-term concern is whether small upgrades will eventually make old gear obsolete anyway. Knowing why certain items stay useful longer than others, and what could make them obsolete, gives you a clearer basis for future gear choices.

WoW Forever Gear Progression: Will Old Raid Gear Remain BiS After New Raids?

Will New Raids Replace Old Gear?

In World of Warcraft: Forever, horizontal progression focuses on adding more activities across the game world while further developing professions and the Legacy system. Gear still gains power.

The developers want some older raid items to remain BiS and earlier dungeons to retain reasons for revisiting them. Keep older equipment when its stats or combined effects still outperform the alternatives, but no specific number of competitive raid tiers has been promised.

Can Small Power Gains Accumulate?

If every tier adds power, even modest increases can eventually widen the gap between old and new gear. With each new tier, check whether its drops offer the same benefits as your existing gear while improving on them.

When they offer better stats and cover its existing function, the older piece has less room to remain competitive. This is a risk inherent in continuing power growth; Blizzard has not published enough numbers to calculate its pace.

To judge how WoW Forever differs from a conventional replacement cycle, look at how many items remain competitive across tiers, which specializations they support, and whether new content adds gearing choices. Keeping one BiS drop can attract players who need it, but does not establish continued demand for the raid's other rewards.

A gear soft reset generally means new content makes much of an older setup uncompetitive, without necessarily deleting items. Clay Stone says it is too early to determine whether one will happen.

The team wants long-term effort to matter, but has not announced a complete approach to cumulative power gaps, catch-up progression, or possible future resets. Eventual obsolescence does not confirm a planned reset.

The Two-Ring Trade-Off

First Mate Band illustrates how WoW Forever can pair early dungeon equipment with a level-60 item. It does not directly prove that older raid BiS will survive later raid tiers. The database lists it as a Deadmines drop from Mr. Smite, usable at level 17.

Band of the Better Half can only be equipped at level 60, and players still lack confirmed details on how to obtain it. With beta characters currently limited to level 30, the full set's effectiveness at level 60 remains untested.

Both rings belong to Partners in Crime. Equipping both grants a Strength bonus and a chance for melee swings to trigger another 50 Strength for 10 seconds. These are beta database details; final values still need confirmation.

The pairing explains why an early ring might return to a later build. If another ring serves you better while leveling, replace First Mate Band and bank it, then compare the complete pair once you obtain its partner.

Characters benefiting from Strength and melee triggers have a reason to assess it. Casters should not target it simply because the set spans different levels.

Compare both set rings against two alternative rings. Replacing just one requires accounting for the lost set bonus as well as the alternatives' other stats. A 10-second trigger does not mean a permanent 50 Strength increase; do not calculate it as a constant benefit.

When Is Replacement Worthwhile?

When considering a replacement in WoW Forever, identify what makes the old item valuable.

For equipment built around raw stats, focus on what your specialization gains. Evaluate set pieces as a complete combination, and judge special effects by how reliably they activate and contribute during the encounters you plan to tackle. Once the old piece no longer serves those purposes, there is less reason to retain it.

Current Situation

Replacement or Farming Decision

New gear improves relevant stats without losing a combined effect

Prioritize trying the new item

Replacing one piece breaks a useful set

Compare once the replacement combination is complete

An old effect helps only in particular fights

Use new gear normally; keep the old piece for those encounters

An old drop has been replaced and has no backup purpose

Stop repeating the old dungeon or raid for that item

Once you identify a worthwhile replacement, assess its preparation costs. For crafted gear before raiding, check which weak slot it improves, then review the recipe and missing materials before choosing between gathering and trading.

Spending WoW Forever gold on materials should reflect how long you expect to use the item; crafting costs do not establish lasting value.

For bracers you intend to use, check the relevant enchant's materials before allocating WoW Forever gold. If another player handles the enchant, account for materials and service charges separately.

For temporary gear, consider its remaining use before committing to an enchant. First Mate Band binds when picked up; preparation expenses cannot replace obtaining the drop.

Before committing more to a replacement, reserve the WoW Forever gold needed to participate: prepare potions and food for expected use, and check durability and repair costs.

Enchants prepare new equipment; consumables and repairs support continued participation. Budget separately so one replacement does not absorb the resources for later activities.

Plan around Each Development Stage

The current WoW Forever beta caps characters at level 30. Use it to understand equipment combinations and follow class changes; it cannot establish long-term level-60 raid BiS. Record important item names, partners, and purposes without committing to a list intended to last across tiers.

After launch, recheck item descriptions and retain backup gear with a defined combination or encounter use. Confirm actual acquisition requirements for partner items already listed in databases.

As additional raid tiers become available, revisit your equipment choices based on the new loot tables and updated builds for the current version.

Keep your specialization, buffs, and combat conditions consistent when comparing equipment. One damage result cannot establish an upgrade.
