What's going on everybody? It's Popular Stranger, and today we're breaking down everything you need to know about Phenom tokens in College Football 27 Ultimate Team. Part one of the Phenoms program dropped yesterday with some of the best cards in the game, and there's a really easy coin-making opportunity along with a great way to upgrade your team if you don't have the greatest roster—helping you avoid the need to buy College Football 27 Coins just to stay competitive. We're going to cover all of it.
How to Earn Phenom Tokens
There are three different ways to earn Phenom tokens, all found within the event section.
Head-to-Head Event
The objective here is to win four games before you lose one. A perfect 4-0 run gives you three tokens and an 80+ non-BND Phenoms player pack. If you get to three wins and then lose the fourth, you still get one token and an 80+ BND player pack. Every win also pays out 3,000 coins as a per-game reward. There's no entry fee, so you can play this over and over again.
Squads Event
This follows the same structure as head-to-head but requires coordination with teammates. It's equally rewarding but more difficult. You need to go 4-0 with your squad to earn the maximum rewards.
CPU Event (Solo)
This is by far the easiest method and not very time-consuming either. The objective is the same – go 4-0 against the CPU. A perfect run gives you two tokens and an 80+ BND pack. While not as rewarding as head-to-head, it's far less time-consuming. A full 4-0 run takes roughly 40 minutes, and some players can do it even faster. The games are full matches but only have 2-minute quarters. The scoring system includes house rules where you get extra points for rushing and passing touchdowns of certain lengths. The key is to get a 17-point lead on the computer – once you do, they stop using their timeouts, making everything go much faster.
Which Event Should You Choose?
For competitive players who are confident in their skills, head-to-head and Squads offer the best rewards. These are the most efficient routes if you can consistently win. For casual players or those with limited time, the CPU event is the way to go. It's incredibly easy, still rewarding, and you can spam it repeatedly to farm tokens at an unlimited rate.
What to Do with Your Phenom Tokens
Once you have at least five tokens, head to your Item Sets and use the Phenoms program filter. You'll find roughly six different sets you can use these tokens on.
The Guaranteed 85 Overall Cards (Your First Priority)
There are three sets that give you guaranteed 85 overall players. I strongly recommend prioritizing these if you don't already have a great team or a high coin stack.
The best of the three is Gerod Prindle Jr. , a running back with good speed, acceleration, and juke move. He's an excellent feature back and works great as a backup RB. With wear and tear being what it is this year, having a reliable substitute is valuable. He fits well into the two-running back sets in the Washington State playbook.
The second best option is Amari Adams, a defensive tackle. He has 79 speed, which doesn't bode well for the long term, but when you compare him to the field right now, he's basically tied for third among all defensive tackles in the game. There's an LTD from the Cornerstone's program with 83 speed that goes for a million coins, and another with 80 speed – so Adams is actually competitive at his position currently.
The third option is Jayvon Nichols, a wide receiver who is only 5'9" and has 84 speed. That's not terrible, but we're moving upwards. A lot of cards are getting 86 speed very soon, and the norm is going to be 87. So this card is already falling behind. If you don't have many good receivers, he's worth a look, but I'd rank him last.
I went with Prindle for my first five tokens and plan to take Adams with my second set.
The Random Sets
Once you've secured your guaranteed 85s, you can start using additional tokens on the three random sets. These are based on the player's high school recruiting star rating – three-star, four-star, or five-star.
The Set Exclusives
Each set has one exclusive card that you can only get from that specific set – you cannot buy these off the auction house.
For the three-star set, the exclusive is Vincent Shavers Jr.
For the four-star set, the exclusive is Clayton Smith – an edge rusher with 83 speed, great acceleration, solid block shed, and decent power move. This is a really good card if you can pull it.
For the five-star set, the exclusive is Devin Sanchez – a cornerback with 86 speed, 86 man coverage, and he's 6'2". If you run a lot of man coverage, this is the card you want to chase.
The Warning
Here's the problem – these sets are pure luck. If you do the five-star set chasing Devin Sanchez, you could also pull an 80 or 81 overall five-star player instead. For example, Josh Petty is an 80 overall but also a five-star player. You're taking a real gamble. This is exactly why I recommend getting your guaranteed 85s first.
The Coin-Making Opportunity
Even if you don't pull a top card, these sets are profitable. If you get an 84 overall, that card sells for about 200,000 coins. Even the 80 overall cards go for roughly 25,000 coins. The 81s sell for about 30,000, 82s for 45,000, and 83s for 60,000.
Since you can earn tokens at an unlimited rate by spamming the CPU event, you can continuously dump tokens into these sets. If you get lucky and pull a great player, you can either keep them for your team or sell them. Worst case scenario, you'll still make decent coin.
The Field Pass and Breakout Tokens
The Phenoms Field Pass is another major component. If you max it out – which is actually possible right now – you earn a breakout token. Some players already maxed it out because week two objectives were accidentally available early. If you purchase the premium field pass (around $7-8), you get an extra 10,000 XP and a second breakout token when you fully max the pass.
What Are Breakout Tokens?
These tokens can take any Phenoms card that is not already an 86 overall and upgrade it to 86 overall. You go to the player's upgrade screen, navigate to exchange, and trade the breakout token for 50 skill points that can only be used on that specific player. Apply those 50 skill points and the card becomes an 86 overall.
Critical Warning
Absolutely do not use a breakout token on a player unless you are 100% sure you want to upgrade them. You cannot get the token back once used. You can reroll the skill points by clicking the right analog stick, but there is a coin cost associated with that. The reroll might even be bugged right now, so proceed with caution.
Best Strategy for Breakout Tokens
The real opportunity is taking lower overall cards and turning them into 86s. For example, DeShawn Spears is about 136,000 coins right now – he's 6'3" with 85 speed, but with the breakout token, you can get him up to 86 or even 87 speed. His man coverage is pretty good. When you upgrade cards with skill points, the attributes that get boosted are somewhat random – you have that reroll option, but it costs coins.
If you're trading in five tokens and get a lower overall card at a position of need, consider saving it for the breakout upgrade rather than selling immediately. An 80 overall like Josh Petty can become an 86 overall, which is a massive jump in usability.
Summary of Priority Strategy
Earn five tokens first – the CPU event is fastest for this. Spend your first five tokens on a guaranteed 85 overall player. Prioritize Gerod Prindle Jr. first, then Amari Adams. Earn another five tokens and take your second guaranteed 85. After securing the 85s, use all additional tokens on the random sets. Target the set with the exclusive card you most want. If you pull a lower overall card that fits a position of need, save it for the breakout token upgrade. If you pull something valuable you don't need, sell it for coin.
Final Tips
The CPU event is your best friend for quick, reliable token farming – you can spam it endlessly. Head-to-head is more rewarding if you're skilled and can consistently win. Save training from BND packs for upcoming overall increases – 87 overall champions and 88 LTDs are expected soon.
