New Rumor System Adds a Different Way to Explore Tamriel

One of the biggest additions in Update 51 is the new Rumor System. Instead of following a traditional quest marker from one objective to the next, these investigations encourage you to pay attention to the world around you.

How Rumors Work

Rumors appear naturally as you play. Some can be completed relatively quickly, while others may send you across different areas and require you to discover information through books, conversations, and environmental clues.

The system has three general levels, starting with simple whispers and progressing toward more complicated intrigues and full conspiracies.

Rather than receiving every objective immediately, you are given hints and have to work out what they mean. A dedicated section has also been added to the quest journal to help keep these investigations organized.

You can begin the system through the starting quest available in the Crown Store or by speaking with Tilly the Gossip at the southern docks in Daggerfall.

Scholar's Vault Introduces a Roguelike Adventure

Update 51 also introduces the Scholar's Vault, a new roguelike-style dungeon experience built around sequential rooms and unpredictable challenges.

Explore Rooms, Solve Puzzles and Fight for Rewards

The Vault takes you through different rooms containing combat encounters, puzzles, mazes, jumping sections, and other challenges. Progressing through the run eventually leads to a final encounter and valuable rewards.

The experience is designed to be more than a conventional dungeon. You need to adapt to different room layouts and challenges while searching for chests, leads, and other rewards along the way.

A new Griffon mount is among the notable rewards available from the Vault.

However, accessing this content requires planar keys. These can be obtained through activities connected to earlier content, including Season 1 activities, the Thieves Guild, dynamic events, and treasure maps.

Solo Dungeons Are Coming to Two Group Dungeons

Update 51 also lays the groundwork for a major change to dungeon content. Two existing group dungeons will eventually receive solo versions: March of Sacrifices and Moon Hunter Keep.

Story Mode and Solo Challenges

The solo versions are designed to make dungeon stories accessible without requiring a traditional group. Story Mode allows players to experience the content alone or with a companion, with enemy difficulty closer to that of open-world delves.

For players looking for something harder, the dungeons also offer modifiers through the Undaunted system.

You can activate a pile of loot and select up to three negative modifiers. Each additional modifier significantly increases the challenge, with the full combination intended to create a demanding solo experience.

The hardest version is designed to push solo players beyond the difficulty of more familiar solo content.

New Rewards

Solo dungeon runs can also provide new monster sets and styles, along with Undaunted Keys. A new merchant in the Undaunted enclaves offers crates containing dungeon-related equipment, styles, and monster sets.

The solo versions arrive later than the initial Update 51 launch, giving players additional content to look forward to during the next season.

Alchemy Receives a Major Rework

Alchemy is another system receiving substantial changes in Update 51. Several existing effects have been reorganized, particularly around power and critical buffs.

New Potion Effects and Ingredients

The update combines some previously separate effects while adjusting others. New effects include healing buffs, healing reduction, damage shields, healing absorption, and a horn-style group buff.

Potion names are also being changed so that they are based on the primary effect rather than simply reflecting the first buff on the potion.

Four new ingredients have also been introduced. Their sources vary, with some coming from snowy areas, treasure maps, Imperial City sewers, and solo dungeon content.

These changes give Alchemy a broader set of possible effects while also making the system easier to understand at a glance.

Hybridization Continues Across Combat Systems

Update 51 continues ESO's long-running hybridization changes. Mundus Stones, buffs, class passives, and Alchemy are among the areas affected.

Many buffs now provide both weapon and spell power, while critical-related effects are also being brought together.

The Warrior Mundus Stone now provides both types of offensive power. The Apprentice Mundus Stone has also been repositioned as a leveling-focused option, providing additional experience and Inspiration.

Several group passives have been adjusted as well. Dragonknight and Nightblade retain their respective Minor Brutality and Minor Savagery effects in hybridized forms, while Sorcerer and Templar receive group utility related to penetration.

PvP and Battleground Changes

Update 51 also brings several changes to PvP.

Transmute Stations have been returned to PvP areas, allowing players to craft in locations such as Cyrodiil and the Imperial City.

Three-sided Battlegrounds are also returning as a permanent part of the game. Fun formats can support larger team configurations, including 6v6v6 and 9v9, while the competitive queue remains unchanged.

Shield strength has also been adjusted in PvP. The strength of shields now depends partly on the number of nearby allies, meaning shields become weaker when more allies are present.

Antiquities and Quality-of-Life Improvements

Antiquities are receiving a major accessibility update later in the year when the system becomes free for everyone.

Early leveling has been accelerated, while the progression paths for green, blue, and purple leads have been shortened. The Antiquarian's Eye has also been made easier to understand.

Older leads through High Isle are being adjusted so their drop rates are more consistent with newer content. Leads can also continue appearing until the associated codex entry has been fully completed.

UI and Housing Improvements

PC players also receive a new UI editor test mode. With keyboard and mouse controls, players can move interface elements, select lists, adjust coordinates, and reset changes. Settings are saved to the account.

Other quality-of-life additions include the ability to pin achievements to the screen and adjust the intensity of player, ally, and enemy ability effects.

Housing management is also being improved. Your primary residence remains at the top of the teleport list, while additional sorting options make housing tabs easier to navigate.

Level-up rewards have been simplified as well, with skill and attribute reset scrolls removed from the standard level-up reward pile.

Class and Combat Balance Changes

Update 51 includes a variety of smaller combat adjustments across different classes and skills.

Dragonknight receives several changes, including a PvP-only reduction to the strength of heavy charges. Other adjustments affect resource regeneration, Avalanche stacking, Burn damage, and Dragonfire Breath.

Nightblade stealth behavior is also being changed, while Warden receives a damage adjustment to Arctic Blast. Elemental Vulnerability now has a higher resource cost, and Shield Charge provides a brief automatic block after activation.

Expert Hunter no longer breaks stealth for nearby players and instead provides a detection effect similar to a detection potion.

Werewolf skills are also being adjusted, with some abilities requiring more resources and changes to healing and synergy behavior.

What Update 51 Adds to ESO

ESO Update 51 is a broad update rather than a single-system patch. The new Rumor System gives exploration a more investigative style, while Scholar's Vault introduces a roguelike activity built around changing rooms and challenges.

The upcoming solo versions of March of Sacrifices and Moon Hunter Keep expand access to dungeon stories, and the Alchemy rework changes how buffs and potion effects work. PvP, Antiquities, UI customization, housing, and combat balance also receive meaningful improvements.

With several of these features arriving in stages, Update 51 provides both immediate additions and new content to explore throughout the following season. To keep up with each stage, The Elder Scrolls Online Gold can help you acquire the gear and materials needed to adapt as the new systems roll out.
