Summary

Hitting Veteran 3 in NBA 2K27 unlocks a batch of signature animations that only a small fraction of the player base has access to. Some of them are stupidly overpowered. Some are laughably slow. This guide breaks down every animation you get at Vet 3, what it requires, and which ones are actually worth putting on your build. Everything below was tested in real games — including matches against cheaters — so the rankings reflect actual gameplay, not just how the animations look in the menu. And if you're short on NBA 2K27 VC to build out your player and actually reach Vet 3, that's worth sorting out before you grind.

Small Guard Jump Shot: Patrick Mills

Verdict: Very good — potentially build-saving.

Small guard jump shots have been fried all year, so Patrick Mills arrives with a lot of pressure on it. After testing:

Catch and shoot: Clean. Greens consistently with minimal warm-up.

Off the dribble: Feels smooth and greenable.

Range: Effective from deep, including beyond half court.

Timing: Forgiving enough that even a first-time user can green shots without knowing the release.

The jumper feels clean in the flow of a real game, not just in the testing gym. If you play small guard and you're struggling to shoot, Patrick Mills is worth the wait.

Recommendation: Put it on immediately at Vet 3.

Small Guard Dribble Moves

Steve Francis Breakdown Combo — Better of the Two

Steve Francis is the stronger of the two small guard breakdown combos. It's a legitimate move with real utility.

Note: Steve Francis not being at Vet 3 strongly suggests his signature size-up — historically one of the best in 2K — will be a season release. Keep an eye out.

Quinton Grimes Breakdown Combo — Skip It

Grimes kind of just goes up and down and does nothing with the ball. Not worth a slot.

Lonzo Ball Crossover — Best Downhill Move

Lonzo Ball Crossover was the best move for getting to a dunk last year. This year it looks slightly slowed down, so it needs in-game testing to confirm it's still elite.

Requirement: 91 ball handle, which means the tallest you can be is 6'7. Keep this in mind if you're planning your build around it.

Tall Guard Jump Shots

Tracy McGrady — Decent, But Slow

T-Mac was dominant in 2K24 and 2K25, then fell off in 2K26. This year's version:

Historically slow jump shot

Requires holding the button far longer than quick jumpers

Visual cue players will like it more than memory players

Once you look at your player, it starts snapping green — even from beyond half court

The catch: If you don't like looking at your player, T-Mac is one of the worst jump shots in the game. If you do, it might be one of the best.

Recommendation: Decent, and could be very good in the right hands — but only if you're a visual cue shooter.

Kobe Bryant — The Best Catch and Shoot Jumper at Vet 3

Kobe Bryant base is the standout. Testing results:

First game, no warm-up: 6 for 9 from three

Catch and shoot: Greens every time — feels automatic

Off the dribble: Still greenable, just slightly rougher

Contested shots: Greens in defenders' faces

Look direction: Doesn't matter — muscle memory or visual cue, it greens either way

The shot animation looks odd (it fades backward on standstill shots), but the green window is enormous. It also produced a contest green off a fadeaway on the very first attempt.

Recommendation: If you play tall guard, put on Kobe when you hit Vet 3. It's the best jumper in the batch.

Jared Culver — Horrible

Jared Culver looked wonky in the animation screen with a visible hitch, and it played even worse in game:

Slower than T-Mac — by a lot

Took roughly "eight years" to release

14% from three in testing

Green window exists but the animation is painfully slow

Recommendation: Skip it. Use Kobe instead.

Tall Guard Dribble Move: Lonzo Ball Breakdown Combo — Trash

This one is easy to call. Lonzo Ball Breakdown Combo:

91 ball handle requirement

Character just sits there and does nothing

You'll get ripped every single time

No utility, no downhill pressure

Recommendation: Not worth it. The Lonzo Ball Crossover is the move you actually want — test that one instead.

Tall Center Jump Shot: Crisp

Base Crisp is one of the best bases for tall centers in 2K history — a super smooth catch and shoot jumper. The problem: no tall center build on the test account could equip it. A dummy build at 78 overall was planned just to test it.

Recommendation: If you run a tall center, this is likely worth picking up. It has a strong historical track record.

Gameplay Notes and Caveats

Pre-patch testing: All gameplay was recorded before the gameplay patch went live. At that time:

Steals were still overpowered

Contests were essentially non-existent

Spamming X on defense was the best defense in the game

Post-patch, some of these findings may shift slightly, but open-shot green windows should remain largely the same.

Cheater encounters: Multiple games featured opponents using glitched or cheating setups. One opponent named "Unemployed" was shooting over defenders and not missing. Even so, Kobe base was greening just as much as the cheater — a good sign for how strong the jumper is.

NBA 2K27 Veteran 3 Animations Guide: Best Jump Shots, Dribble Moves & Rankings

Key Takeaways

Kobe Bryant base is the clear winner — it greens from anywhere, contested or open

Patrick Mills finally gives small guards a reliable jumper

T-Mac is only worth it if you shoot by watching your player

Jared Culver is the worst jumper in the batch — avoid

Lonzo Ball Crossover is the dribble move to chase, not the breakdown combo

Steve Francis not being at Vet 3 hints at a season release for his signature size-up

Pick your jumper based on how you shoot — memory or visual cue — and you'll get far more out of these unlocks. Kobe works for both. If you'd rather skip the VC grind entirely, MMOEXP is a reliable place to find 2K27 VC for sale, with secure delivery and competitive pricing.
