As Path of Exile 2 continues to expand its dark, immersive world, players will find themselves uncovering hidden mechanics and secret rewards that aren't always explained outright. One such mystery occurs about halfway into Act 3, when you start encountering mysterious, differently colored mushrooms as loot drops.

These mushrooms are highlighted in green, signaling their importance for a quest. However, Path of Exile 2 provides little guidance on their purpose or where to use them. Fortunately, once you understand their mechanics, you can turn them into valuable resources—including powerful flasks that can aid your survival. But the real trick is using this knowledge to your advantage and leveraging POE 2 currency to maximize your rewards.
How to Obtain Mushrooms in Path of Exile 2
Mushrooms are an unusual loot drop found exclusively in the Apex of Filth region in Act 3. This area, perched atop a pyramid on the Act 3 map, is already a required location for the main story, meaning most players will pass through it at some point. However, acquiring the mushrooms requires time, patience, and a little bit of luck.
Mushroom Variants and Drop Mechanics
Mushrooms come in three distinct colors:
Blue Mushroom
Green Mushroom
Red Mushroom
When they drop on the ground, you can immediately see what color they are before picking them up. The good news? Once you collect a specific color, it will no longer drop, increasing your chances of finding the remaining ones. However, drop rates are entirely random, meaning you may have to grind for hours before obtaining all three.
These mushrooms can drop from:
Killing enemies in the Apex of Filth
Opening chests scattered throughout the area
Defeating area bosses
Best Strategy for Farming Mushrooms
Since the mushrooms spawn randomly, you cannot manipulate drop rates directly. However, players have reported that they tend to drop more frequently on Cruel difficulty, making it a better option for faster farming.
If you clear the entire Apex of Filth and still haven't collected all three mushrooms, your best bet is to reset the instance by following these steps:
Open any Waypoint and select the Apex of Filth.
Click the map's icon.
On controller: Hold A/X to access the Instance Manager.
On keyboard: Press Ctrl + Left Click to open the Instance Manager.
Follow the prompts to create a new instance of the map.
The Apex of Filth resets—all enemies and bosses respawn, giving you another shot at farming mushrooms.
Repeat this process until you've secured one of each color.
How to Use Mushrooms in Path of Exile 2
Once you've collected all three mushrooms, your next step is to locate the cauldron where they are used. Conveniently, you don't need to leave the Apex of Filth to complete this secret objective.
Finding the Cauldron Keeper
Deep within the Apex of Filth, there is a small hidden area with a cauldron and an NPC called the Cauldron Keeper. This location is near a checkpoint and often found slightly off to the side of the main path.
