Summary

WoW Forever may bring back one of Classic WoW's most distinctive dungeon concepts: the mega dungeon. Senior game designer Josh Greenfield recently teased a large dungeon experience that could allow players to spend hours exploring, similar to the old Blackrock Depths. While Blizzard has not officially confirmed that WoW Forever will add a new mega dungeon, the previously revealed Blackmaw Hold for level 55+ players has made the idea especially interesting. A future mega dungeon could go beyond bosses and loot by offering exploration, professions, gathering, WOW Forever Gold, and other activities.

1. What Is a Mega Dungeon?

A mega dungeon is essentially a very large five-player dungeon that can take much longer to complete than a standard dungeon. Blackrock Depths is the classic example. It was designed as a huge underground Dwarven city with many routes and numerous boss encounters.

Instead of simply following one linear path, players could learn different routes depending on their goals. Groups could return to specific sections for particular bosses or rewards, making knowledge of the dungeon layout an important part of progression.

This design created an experience that could feel closer to a small raid while still being built around a five-player party.

2. Blackrock Depths as the Inspiration

Blackrock Depths remains one of the best-known examples of large-scale Classic dungeon design. Its size allowed players to explore different areas, discover encounters, and develop efficient routes over time.

WoW Forever's slower, exploration-focused philosophy makes this type of dungeon especially interesting. Instead of designing every activity around quick completion, Blizzard could use a large dungeon to create a location players gradually learn and revisit.

3. Could Blackmaw Hold Become a Mega Dungeon?

Blizzard previously revealed Blackmaw Hold as a dungeon for level 55+ players. It has not officially been described as a mega dungeon, but the concept has naturally led to speculation after Greenfield's recent comments.

The Timbermaw connection is also notable. The teased imagery appears related to the Timbermaw, the bear-like Furbolg faction found in Classic Warcraft locations. If Blackmaw Hold becomes a large-scale dungeon, it could provide an expansive environment with multiple routes, encounters, and exploration opportunities.

However, its final structure has not been confirmed.

4. More Than Bosses and Loot

A major opportunity for WoW Forever would be using mega dungeons for activities beyond traditional combat. Players could potentially mine unique materials, fish in rare locations, search for hidden treasures, complete profession objectives, World of Warcraft: Forever Gold, or simply spend time exploring the environment.

This would fit WoW Forever's broader focus on horizontal progression and long-term usefulness. A mega dungeon could become a location worth visiting even after players already have its main equipment rewards.

5. Why Mega Dungeons Fit WoW Forever

Modern WoW dungeons are heavily connected to streamlined progression and seasonal systems, which makes extremely large dungeons harder to integrate. WoW Forever has more room to experiment with slower and more permanent content.

For now, Blackmaw Hold's status as a mega dungeon remains unconfirmed. However, the possibility of another Blackrock Depths-style adventure fits the game's Classic-inspired direction. If Blizzard embraces the concept, the most interesting part may not be the number of bosses, but how much there is to discover and how many reasons players have to return.
