Summary
Freezing Shards on the Gelid Staff fires six projectiles that can all hit one enemy, shotgunning huge single-target damage. With Spirit Walker's Primal Bounty boosting projectile count and damage, it easily one-shots most bosses and clears T16 content—and if you'd rather skip the grind, you can buy POE2 Currency to fund your build faster. Available from level 2, it's a fantastic league starter that carries you to the endgame and pinnacle bosses.
Important Notes Before You Start
Known Bugs (As of This Patch)
Freezing Shards currently seems to be bugged. Certain modifiers that give additional projectiles do not work:
Chance to fire an additional projectile — does not work with Freezing Shards.
Chance for spells to fire two additional projectiles — does not work either.
It's unclear if this is intentional or a bug, but regardless, it's a big power loss. However, there are certain mechanics that do give us more projectiles, which we'll cover below.
Boss Hitbox Issues
Another very large issue with Freezing Shards is boss hitboxes. As you progress, you'll notice it's very difficult to hit bosses with every projectile. Despite being point-blank against the boss, the majority of projectiles often seem to fly off wherever. Hitboxes are a very inconsistent thing about this build.
The solution: The Ghost March boots. This unique pair of boots makes it so when you dodge roll, you can phase through enemies. You can strategically dodge roll and phase inside a boss's hitbox. That way, when you cast Freezing Shards, it guarantees every single projectile will hit. This phase technique takes practice, but it's the most reliable method for hitting all projectiles on a boss.
Core Mechanics and Projectile Stacking
Primal Bounty (Ascendancy)
Primal Bounty is given by your Ascendancy. Over 6 seconds, you gain three stacks of Owl Feathers. You then dodge roll to consume these stacks and empower your next ability. This empowered ability gives you:
An additional 6 projectiles
A ton of projectile speed
The node Maka's Gift in the Ascendancy makes the empowerment even stronger.
Oloth's Conviction
If you have enough Divine Orbs, grab Oloth's Conviction. This makes it so the next empowered skill can be used two additional times.
Mana Tempest
Mana Tempest is a skill gem buff that makes our projectiles split. This can give us at least six additional projectiles (with some variance), making it very powerful in this build.
Breachlord's Amalgam
The Breachlord's Amalgam Lineage Support makes it so all projectiles return to us, giving us another instance of damage. This is a huge damage multiplier.
Skill Gem Setup
Weapon Set 1: Boss Killer
This is your big burst setup. You have two copies of Freezing Shards on this set.
Gem | Purpose |
Freezing Shards | Main skill |
Breachlord's Amalgam | Projectiles return, second instance of damage |
Zerok's Revolt | Gives long cooldown we build around; 5 casts of Freezing Shards at once |
Pinpoint Critical | Critical hit chance (we scale a fair amount of crit) |
Projectile Acceleration III | More projectile speed and damage (synergy with Primal Bounty's ~200 projectile speed) |
Rocky Flow (Rachiatas) | Very powerful; if you don't have it, use Blasphemy + Elemental Weakness + Frost Bomb for exposure |
Weapon Set 2: Map Clearer
The second Freezing Shards focuses on general damage and utility.
Gem | Purpose |
Freezing Shards | Main skill |
Cold Mastery | Damage |
Projectile Acceleration III | Speed and damage |
Rapid Casting | Cast speed |
Pierce III | Feels very good on this one |
Ice Bite | Damage |
Swap tip: If you have Rachiata's Flow, interchange these two. While clearing the map, put Rachiata's in your second set. When fighting a boss, quick swap between Ice Bite and Rachiata's.
Mana Tempest Setup
Gem | Purpose |
Mana Tempest | Additional lightning damage; projectiles split to two additional targets (at least 6 extra projectiles) |
Arcane Surge | Free source of Arcane Surge (Mana Tempest drains mana quickly) |
Efficiency | Lessen mana drain |
Lightning Mastery | Damage |
Cooldown Reduction | Faster uptime |
Rapid Casting II | Cast speed |
Flame Wall Setup
Flame Wall buffs our projectiles by adding fire damage as projectiles pass through it. By consuming a lightning infusion, it also adds lightning damage to our projectiles.
Gem | Purpose |
Flame Wall | Fire damage buff |
Fire Mastery | Damage |
Efficiency | Prolong duration |
Magnified Area | Larger area |
Rapid Casting | Cast speed |
Lightning Infusion Generation
To generate lightning infusions, use a Cast on Elemental Ailment setup on Weapon Swap 2 (your mapping Freezing Shards). Include Living Bomb.
When this procs, Living Bomb gives us a fire infusion remnant. But by using the keystone Elemental Equilibrium, our fire infusion turns into a lightning infusion.
Gem | Purpose |
Living Bomb | Fire infusion remnant → Lightning infusion via Elemental Equilibrium |
Overabundance | More procs |
Efficiency | Cost reduction |
Energy Retention | Duration |
Boundless Energy II | Energy |
Cast on Critical (Optional)
On Weapon Set 1, you can use Cast on Critical for style points with Eye of Winter. This is not necessary — it was included because there was spare spirit. Eye of Winter has a long cooldown and only procs every 6 seconds or so. Its projectiles match Freezing Shards and can be empowered by Flame Wall. A random snap gem can also be added for extra damage, though it's barely noticeable.
