Cryptic Keys have become a valuable currency source in PoE 2, and you can farm them without investing heavily in your maps. The strategy focuses on combining Expedition, Buried Strongboxes, and rare monsters to generate large numbers of Cryptic Keys while also earning raw POE2 Currency.
The method is particularly effective because the required tablets can be self-rolled cheaply, while the large number of rare monsters gives you additional chances to trigger Cryptic Key drops.
Atlas Setup for Cryptic Key Farming
The core of this strategy is an Atlas setup that increases both Expedition encounters and the number of Strongboxes available in your maps.
Expedition Atlas Passives
Start by investing heavily into the Expedition Atlas tree and take Steady Development Explosives to gain an additional explosive.
More explosives are important because they allow you to cover more Remnants and Strongboxes during each Expedition encounter.
On your main Atlas tree, invest in the Strongbox-related passives that provide additional Strongboxes. The goal is to increase the number of Strongboxes you can detonate during the Expedition farming process.
You can add mechanics such as Delirium or Sacred Wisps if you want additional juice, but they aren't required for the basic version of the strategy.
Best Tablets for Cryptic Keys
For the basic setup, use three or four Expedition tablets.
The most important modifier is:
2 Buried Strongboxes in Map
Try to get this modifier on every tablet.
After that, prioritize modifiers that increase the number of rare monsters. Higher rare-monster density directly improves the number of opportunities to obtain Cryptic Keys.
You can use self-rolled tablets to keep the investment low. Expedition tablets are relatively easy to obtain, so a simple approach is to use Alchemy Orbs and keep rolling until you find the important Strongbox and rare-monster modifiers.
Optional High-Investment Setup
If you want to push the strategy further, replace one Expedition tablet with an Irradiated Tablet and run Tier 16 maps.
This increases the value of the rare monsters and can make Exceptional items from Strongboxes considerably more valuable.
For a cheap farming strategy, however, standard Expedition tablets are enough.
Map and Master Setup
Your maps should have as much increased monster rarity as possible. Around 50–60% or higher is a useful target.
You should also use the appropriate Master setup.
Mysterious Gifts and Partial Translations
The key Master passives are:

Partial Translations — adds more Strongboxes to your maps.
Keen Appraisal — provides additional value from exceptional items.
Mysterious Gifts is the most important part of the setup because the Cryptic Keys primarily come from rare monsters spawned by Strongboxes.
Keen Appraisal becomes more interesting when you move into the Irradiated Tablet + Tier 16 version, where exceptional rewards can become significantly more valuable.
You should also use Corrupted Waystones with additional modifiers whenever possible to increase the overall map value.
How to Run the Expedition
Once you enter the map, locate the Expedition encounter and inspect the Strongboxes.
The important part is planning your explosive route before detonating anything.
Plan Your Explosive Route
Look at all the available Strongboxes and determine which ones you can reach with your explosives.
You want to connect as many Strongboxes as possible rather than randomly placing explosives.
If you have six explosives, for example, identify the best clusters and build your route around them.
You can reroll Strongboxes with currency if you're trying to maximize profits, but this isn't necessary for the low-investment version. The basic strategy already produces strong returns without aggressively spending currency on every Strongbox.
If a Strongbox has a modifier that causes it to be guarded by rare monsters, it is particularly valuable because those monsters create additional opportunities for Cryptic Key drops.
