The biggest reason is simple: EA is adjusting player ratings based on what is happening during the real college football season. After preseason and Week 0 changes to College Football 27 Coins, the latest update focuses heavily on performances from Week 1.
If EA continues this approach throughout the season, CFB 27 rosters could stay significantly more accurate as teams develop, freshmen emerge, and players earn larger roles.
EA Is Updating Rosters More Frequently
Before Week 0, EA released a huge roster update that added more than 1,900 players, including freshmen and players missing from the original launch roster. The update also corrected jersey numbers, depth charts, and player ratings.
The September 3 title update then focused on gameplay and additional features, including improvements to man coverage and receiver separation, EA Sports Network integration, new Road to Glory templates, equipment, uniforms, commentary, and other fixes.
Now EA has followed those updates with another ratings adjustment based on actual Week 1 performances.
EA has not officially confirmed that ratings will be updated every week. However, multiple early-season adjustments suggest that College Football 27 could receive much more frequent roster tuning than previous games.
Malachi Toney Moves Closer to 99 Overall
One of the biggest winners is Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney, who moved from a 96 to a 97 overall.
Toney's performance against Stanford resulted in several attribute improvements. His awareness increased to 87, while his catching improved to 84. He also received boosts to catch in traffic and route running.
That puts Toney only two points away from a 99 overall rating.
Miami quarterback Darian Mensah also received an upgrade, moving from 91 to 92 overall. With both players improving, Miami becomes an even more dangerous team for players using updated rosters in Play Now or Dynasty.
Texas and Other Top Programs Receive Multiple Upgrades
Texas also benefited from the latest CFB 27 ratings update.
Wide receiver Cam Coleman increased to 93 overall, while linebacker Raheem Bowles also reached 93. Receiver Ryan Wingo moved up to 88.
Other notable wide receiver upgrades included AJ Duff, who climbed to 93 overall.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this update is how EA is treating lower-rated breakout players.
UMass quarterback William Pap Watson III received one of the largest overall increases, jumping five points to 75 overall.
His individual attributes changed even more dramatically. Awareness increased by six points, break sack improved by 11, and break tackle increased by 10.
A 75 overall rating may not make him one of the game's elite quarterbacks, but the size of the adjustment shows that EA is willing to correct ratings aggressively when a player significantly outperforms his original evaluation.
Pittsburgh quarterback Mason also received a three-point overall increase to 85, along with improvements to deep accuracy, awareness, and throw under pressure.
Individual Attributes Matter More Than Overall Ratings
One of the best aspects of the update is that EA is changing individual attributes rather than simply adjusting overall ratings.
Michigan receiver J.J. McCarthy, for example, moved from 78 to 81 overall. His spectacular catch rating increased four points to 91, jumping increased to 92, and deep route running also improved.
Other players received important speed, change-of-direction, juke, and catching adjustments.
These changes can have a much bigger effect during gameplay than a simple overall rating increase. A two-point speed boost, for example, can change how a receiver separates from defensive backs or how effective a running back feels in the open field.

Not Everyone Received an Upgrade
EA also made several downgrades based on Week 1 performances.

Colorado defensive back Bo Carter and Alabama offensive lineman Michael Carroll were among the other players receiving decreases.
