Summary
With Update #6 bringing back the ability to capture enemy Tramplers, the desert has become a much more dangerous place. Whether you're a solo scavenger or running with a full crew, mastering Trampler combat, looting, and clean extraction is the difference between profit and loss. Stay informed with SAND: Raiders of Sophie Crown for real-time intel on enemy movements and high-value zones—because knowledge is the difference between extracting rich and dying empty-handed.
Understanding the Core Loop
SAND is a PvPvE extraction shooter where your Trampler is everything. It's your transport, your base, your weapons platform, and your lifeline. You drop into the open world of Sophie—a post-apocalyptic dieselpunk desert—scavenge ruins for loot, fight NPCs and other players, and extract with whatever you can carry.
Mode | Description | Best For |
Voyage | No time limit, extractions available from the start, persistent world | Beginners, learning the ropes |
Storm Dive | Shrinking circle, extractions unlock partway through, higher-tier loot | Experienced players seeking bigger rewards |
Before You Drop: Loadout Essentials
The Grumpy Walker Blueprint
For beginners, the Grumpy Walker preset is your best bet. It's cheap to rebuild if you lose it and has well-rounded stats that won't leave you stranded.
What to Pack
Before every expedition, make sure you have:
On your character: Armor, two guns with matching ammo (revolver + rifle is a solid combo), canned food, fuel rods
On your Trampler: Loaded cannons and shells, more food for the fridge, spare fuel, backup gear
Critical rule: Every gun takes its own specific ammo. Always pack the matching shells.
The First 5 Minutes: Setting Up for Survival
Nothing Spawns Loaded
This is the single biggest mistake new players make. When you drop in, everything appears in green storage boxes. Your first job—before you even start driving—is to get combat-ready.
Pick up a cannon kit (or interact with your storage box)
Hold Tab and transfer the entire stack of ammo directly into the cannon—not one shell at a time
Mount the loaded cannon on your Turret slot by holding F
Load your personal guns the same way
Drop food in the fridge (for fast respawns)
Slot a fuel rod into the engine
Engine Off When Stopped
A running engine produces thick black smoke visible from miles away and burns fuel even when stationary. Whenever you stop to loot, turn the engine off—you'll stay hidden and conserve fuel.
Looting: The Box System
Your character's inventory is tiny, so you don't loot directly into it. Instead:
Grab an empty green storage box (there are spares in your fridge)
Carry it to the loot
Walk up to a crate—items pour directly into the box
When full, place the box on a rack (captain's quarters, crew rooms, or shelves)
Rule to remember: Loot only counts if it's on the racks. Anything left loose on the floor when you extract is gone.
Look for brown, green, or red crates with cogwheel, weapon, or cannon icons—these give the best loot.
Trampler Combat: Winning the Big Fights
Know Your Cannons
Three cannon types, three very different jobs:
Cannon | Role | Best Use |
80mm | Heavy hitter | One big slow round, serious damage—finishing blows |
40mm | Workhorse | Continuous fire, decent range—sustained pressure |
70mm | Shotgun cannon | Weak against Tramplers, wide spread—killing enemy crew |
A popular setup: 40mm for pressure, 80mm for the kill, mounted front and back for full coverage.
Target Priority: The Order That Wins Fights
Most new players just blast away at the whole ship. Don't. Follow this order:
Legs first – Cripple their mobility. A slow Trampler can't flank, can't escape.
Cannons next – Take away their ability to punish you.
Reactor last – Destroy it to prevent respawns.
But destroying the reactor is only half the kill. The captain is still alive and can run for extraction or try to steal your ship—put them down too.
Repair or Die
Attrition wins these brawls. The moment your Trampler takes damage, get out the multi-tool and patch the broken pipes, plates, and circuit boxes. Damaged legs slow you down—keep them mended.
Update #6 change: A broken leg can now stun a Trampler with low maneuverability for up to 5 seconds, capping its speed at 20%. Use engines to maintain maneuverability and reduce stun duration.
Boarding: Stealing the Ship
Once you've weakened an enemy, push your Trampler into theirs. Breach into the captain's cabin and interact with the terminal on the table to claim the ship—this instantly denies them respawns and gives you all their cargo.
Tools: Time bombs and C4 are brilliant for blowing open doors, wheels, or cannons.
Don't Forget the Black Box
Grab the black box from any wrecked reactor—it's worth a tidy sum.
Extraction: Getting Out Alive
The Extraction Process
Extraction has a catch that trips up nearly everyone:
Drive into one of the marked evacuation circles
Climb the tower and hold F on the radio
A 90-second timer starts—green smoke flares from your Trampler
A ship arrives to collect your Trampler
Get off the Trampler and grab the rope to extract yourself
Critical: Your ship and your character extract separately. If you stay on deck while your ship leaves, you're stranded. Get off and take the rope.
Extraction Tips
Scout ahead – Use binoculars to scan the extraction zone before moving in. Players often hide nearby, waiting for easy kills.
Leave the engine on "Halt" – You'll need to move if rushed. The black smoke doesn't matter—the green flare already gives you away.
Only one Trampler per extraction point – Wait your turn if another crew is there.
Fire a green flare if approached – This signals "friendly." If they respond in kind, they might leave you alone.
Advanced Tactics
Solo vs. Squad
Solo: Go small and fast. Cluster your wheel, reactor, and cannons close so one person can manage them. Hit-and-run tactics work best.
Squad: Build a heavy mobile base with armor, crew rooms, and turrets. Hide the reactor where it's hard to hit—experienced players aim straight for it. Split roles: one boards, another runs cannons.
Terrain Matters
Use dunes to trap bigger Tramplers by forcing them to climb at awkward angles—they become slow, exposed targets. But drive too fast into a steep hill or rock and you'll take damage and stall, so read the ground. For players who want to skip the learning curve, buy SAND: Raiders of Sophie Crown at MMOEXP—your one-stop shop for guides, currency, and a competitive edge.
PvE Fights
NPC Tramplers: Go down in roughly 4-5 80mm hits, drop crates with fuel rods, alloys, and repair kits.
Ironclads: Spawn at "eye" beacons. They're clumsy on spawn, so land free shots before they wake up.
Upiors: The zombies carry guns and shoot back with surprisingly good aim.
Update #6 Key Changes
With Update #6, Hologryph re-enabled Trampler capture and made several important adjustments:
Trampler capture is now active—you can steal enemy ships again
Duo-only queue added
Crew sizes reorganized: Small = 3-4 players, Large = 5-6
Maneuverability matters more: Boost strength scales with maneuverability; broken legs stun low-maneuverability Tramplers
Ownership device persists even if the Captain's compartment is destroyed
Quick Reference: Essential Tips
Situation | Action |
Dropping in | Load all cannons and guns before moving |
Stopping to loot | Turn engine off—no smoke, no fuel waste |
Looting | Use green storage boxes, rack everything |
Combat | Legs first → cannons → reactor |
Repairing | Patch constantly; attrition wins fights |
Boarding | Use the captain's terminal to claim the ship |
Extracting | Get off the Trampler and take the rope |
